Cénotaphe de Jean Chandos

Description

In the 12th century, a bridge crossed the Vienne about a hundred meters upstream from the present bridge. While defending this bridge against French troops on December 31, 1369, Jehan Chandos, head of the English armies administering the city of Poitiers after the defeat of John the Good, was mortally wounded by Jacques de Saint-Martin, a French squire. Transported to the castle of Morthemer, he died there the next day, on January 1st 1370.
