From the 12th century until the Revolution, the priory of Villesalem was part of the Abbey of Fontevraud and hosted nuns and some religious. Of this founding period, only the church has survived the centuries. In the 17th century, a new conventual building was built, hiding part of the western façade of the church. The Romanesque church presents a very beautiful sculpted ensemble, many elements of which are comparable to Notre-Dame-la-Grande of Poitiers. The western facade and the northern portal are the most remarkable examples where human heads, animals, monsters and plants are intermingled.
The church was classified as a Historic Monument in 1914.
A heritage desk installed at the entrance will give you information on this monument.
