During the 13th century, the Templars from the Commandery of Argentens (near Nérac) settled in Port-Sainte-Marie and built a house and a church following a donation of land by an inhabitant of the town who joined the Order. A priory with a house (the prior's tower), various conventual buildings, and a house for the Commander developed throughout the 13th century. And what was only meant to be a chapel became a church of imposing dimensions, with its high bell tower and large openings.
