Église Saint-Étienne de Marsac

Description

The church is a former Romanesque chapel of a Benedictine priory dependent on Clairac Abbey. It ends with a round apse. It must have had a bell tower on the crossing of the transept. It was partly destroyed during the Wars of Religion.
The priory was acquired by François de Montpezat in 1579, then united with the college of Agen in 1714 and Saint-Jean, in 1729, in the Lateran chapter. It was remodelled in the 17th century. A small side door is dated 1620. The bell-tower-wall was built in the XVIIIth century. Restorations are carried out in 1868 by the contractor Labenne. The sacristy to the south is built around 1880 by the departmental architect T. Teulère. The bell tower partially collapsed in 1886.
The building was registered as a Historical Monument in 1951 and 1995.
