A first castle is cited in the saisimentum, taking possession of the King of France on the lordships of the Count of Toulouse, in 1271, after the death of Alphonse de Poitiers and Jeanne, Countess of Toulouse, without posterity.
The lordship of Frégimont belonged to the Montpezat family when Amanieu de Montpezat seized it in 1418. At the end of the 17th century, it became the property of the de Lusignan family.
In 1769 the seigneury was bought by Jean-Pierre Villate de Lagrave, a lawyer and a Bordeaux notable. Jean-Pierre Villatte is married to Louise de Secondat, Montesquieu's granddaughter. The castle is then described as being in ruins, with still a tower used as a prison, a barn, stables, winery, oven, well and farmyard, surrounded by walls and ditches.
The castle was registered as a Historic Monument on 23 September 2008.
