Description

The date on which the church of Saint Laurent in the village of Andrimont was founded remains unknown. According to a rumour, there is a major link with legend that claims that the castle, built a short distance away, was founded in 940 by Baldric. Indeed, it also holds that the tower was built in 956, just several years after the medieval castle and the two fortified constructions are said to belong to the same defensive complex. Weight was lent to this theory in October 1884 with the discovery of a 7-metre long underground passage starting in the church tower and heading towards the castle. At a height of twenty metres, it possesses walls along the sides which are 7 metres tall and 2 metres thick at their base, enabling it to withstand the earthquake in 1692. Inside, the church is divided into three naves separated by two gothic arches and three semi-circular arches supported by stone columns. All the windows are curved arches. The ceiling of the left transept is adorned with the coat of arms of the Lord of Fays and an inscription dating from 1719 pays homage to him. As for the old clock, it dates back to 1780. The church was again restored in 1882 and a third bell was installed during the same year. The other two, more modest in size, date back to 1503 and 1634 respectively.
