Description

It was in 1739 that the people of Dison obtained the authorisation to build a chapel on the current Place du Sablon square. They dedicated it to Saint Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners. During the 19th century, the small town of Dison continued its economic boom, thanks to its quarry as well as hat-making, shoe-making, gingerbread-making and textile industries. Very logically, the sacred building was also led to develop. In 1803 under Napoleonic reign, the chapel was given the rank of filial church and was enlarged in 1808. Thirty years later, a new enlargement was planned. However, in 1852, the decision was made to build a new church on the current site. The architect Jean-Charles Delsaux, who built the Saint Paul Cathedral and provincial palace in Liège, amongst others, designed a building made of stone and brick, in neo-medieval style, incorporating a Romanesque arch with gothic elevation. The length of the edifice is 55.40 metres and the width of the transept is 25.50 metres. The central nave, transept and choir are 22 metres high and the main tower is 46.70 metres tall. On 21st June 1858, the Bishop of Liège, His Grace Théodore de Montpellier consecrated the church.
