The Garonne is a mainly French river that originates in Spain and flows for 647 km before flowing into the Atlantic Ocean; its common estuary with the Dordogne is the Gironde. It has given its name to the French departments of Haute-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne and Tarn-et-Garonne. Once an important navigation and goods transport route, the Garonne is now only navigable for the largest ships (cargo ships, container ships, etc.) in its estuary, as far as the Pont de Pierre in Bordeaux, and for large barges as far as Langon. The river traffic then takes the Canal de Garonne which is almost exclusively dedicated to river tourism. Over the course of its history, the Garonne has been equipped with bridges that allow it to be crossed, particularly in Bordeaux and Toulouse.
