Built in Carolingian times on a rocky promontory, the castle was a veritable fortress that was to rule the region for centuries. It was then besieged by Charlemagne, ruined by the Normans and rebuilt by the Earl of Leicester on behalf of the King of England during the Hundred Years' War. It was dismantled in 1453. There are now the ruins of the gate of the fortress which was rebuilt.
The remains of the castle are listed in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments.
