PARC ET RESERVE NATURELLE DE FURFOOZ

PARC ET RESERVE NATURELLE DE FURFOOZ

The Lesse, through the ages, has penetrated the chalk rocks, leaving behind numerous caves and sink-holes. The most spectacular of these karstic phenomenons is the underground branch of the Lesse which goes right through the rocky mass. A whole underground world was thus formed, with rooms, galleries and a lake. Numerous caves have been occupied by man over the centuries (- 14000 approx.) and are still occupied to-day .. by a few bats. A very rich archaeological heritage and we have found there lots of objects which help us trace the inhabitants of the location over the course of time. Nearer our times a fortress and thermal baths were built at the end of the Roman era. Only the ruins of these remain. The thermal baths were entirely rebuilt in 1958, this full-scale feature is well worth a visit. If we continue looking at the natural surroundings we will notice chalky lawns (maintained by sheep) a paradise for observers: insectes, orchids,...
