Exciting Discoveries at LAMARQUE ANTOINE, Alos-sibas-abense

In the Souletines mountains, in the dark forests and in the heart of the most secret caves, there would be mysterious and discreet beings. Called Laminak, these beings with nocturnal activities and very varied appearances would have been seen near the hot springs of the small village of Camou. To hope to meet them, you will have to ride a bicycle for 16 km on a hilly route with a rich and varied landscape. Herds of sheep and cows line the route punctuated by villages with beautiful stone houses. A walk on the last 400 meters will be essential to hope to see one of these friendly creatures. If, despite everything, they do not disdain to show themselves, you should not hesitate to immerse yourself in the hot spring to fully enjoy this place full of mystery.

At the gateway to Tardets, Zünharre is a beautiful circuit in the shape of an 8, offering a selection of playful descents suggested by local riders. If the first part of the route seems quite docile on the banks of the Saison or in the heart of the first hamlets and villages, discovering the original Chapeau de Gendarme mountain, the rest of the itinerary quickly awakens your physical and technical skills. The climbs aren't very long, but they can be tough, while the descents alternate between good flow between low walls and a few invigorating slab crossings. The last two thirds of the loop are a concentrate of all-mountain biking, a blue circuit that quickly turns magenta on certain sections if the ground is wet! Along the way, views over the valley and the discreet village of Etchebar add to the interest of this local circuit.

From the banks of the River Saison and Tardets?s lively arcaded square, it takes just a couple of hours to embark on a fairly sporty loop to the Erretzü hill, the atharraztars? (Tardets locals?) easily accessible oxygenation ground. More precisely, this mountain bike route takes you all the way around the Erretzü summit. After a gradual rise in temperature on the banks of the Etcheberry stream, most of the trails are single-track, leading you up the mountainside in an anti-clockwise direction, over all the fern-covered moorland slopes. In addition to panoramic views in all directions, the trails offer a number of technical challenges on both the ascent and descent, with a few rocky climbs requiring explosive and flexible pedaling.

Can you imagine a Xiberotar who hasn't climbed La Madeleine? This hill overlooking Tardets, named after the patron saint of its chapel, is one of Soule's not-to-be-missed climbs, so visible is this watchtower from everywhere, and so remarkable is its panorama. So we had to come up with a mountain bike circuit that would challenge the slopes of the Madeleine, for the taste of effort and the pleasure of the eyes. This is an invigorating circuit, necessarily physical as it includes two ascents of the Madeleine, once via the steep asphalt route on the southern slope, the second time via the more reasonable byways of the Roquiague valley and the Col de Saratsaga. One Madeleine climbed, the second offered!

From Tardets to the Bosmendieta mountain pasture, we set off on a little adventure in isolated country; the Chapeau de Gendarme greets your courage and, once you've passed the last houses, you're off to the great outdoors, with the sensation of gaining altitude on a regular trail, where everyone will have to find the pedaling frequency that suits them best for the long haul, and which is very pleasant because it's panoramic. Up here, you can see all the way from Mauléon to the Pic d'Orhy, via the Pic d'Anie.

The Ibarburia pass is the gateway to the Ahusquy summer pastures, a place known to all the shepherds of the region. The ascent through Alçay is divided into two stages, with the first pass (Lecharria) of 7 km not lacking in character, with percentages worthy of the greatest. The final stretch in the Ahusquy coomb is more bucolic, although a final ramp could still make the calves suffer...

You then take a path in the undergrowth which leads you to Sibas and then go down to the valley of Ibar eskuin. You go up to Camou and then down to Alçabehety before returning to Tardets. The perfect confidentiality of the Col d'Ahusquy makes it an alternative route when attacking the "Aubisque" or the port of "Marie-Blanque". However, when we call it an alternativv, it does not mean a second option. Certainly, the average 5% slopes do not require the use of narcotics, but the short portions at 12% require good physical condition. The route passes through peaceful villages before reaching pastures where cows, horses and sheep graze freely. Narrow and not very crowded, the road draws beautiful curves and crosses a first pass at 832 m. It is followed by a refreshing transitional descent before the final ascent. Once you reach the 948m Col d'Ahusquy (Ibarburia), there will be no cheering crowds or hordes of cyclists, but an orientation table that invites you to enjoy a magnificent view of the surrounding peaks.

To the east of the Saison valley, stretching from Mauléon to Tardets, a series of hills face the Arbailles massif to the west and the imposing wall of the Pyrenees, dominated by the Anie peak to the south. The peak of Erretzü marks the extreme point of this alignment. This position gives it an unobstructed view of the mountains of Bearn and Haute-Soule. The route is very varied. First you walk in the undergrowth along a very pretty stream, then in the open in the ferns dotted with pollarded oaks. Like the ferns that cover it, the summit changes colour with the seasons until it is draped in a flamboyant red in autumn.

A demanding hike, but the immense 360° panorama at the top will make you forget the almost 1,000 m of difference in altitude. There is a breathtaking view over the Saison valley and the Pyrenees, from the ocean to the Pic du Midi de Bigorre. The whole itinerary offers a succession of superb landscapes. After crossing vast ferns, we climb the first summit, Erretzü with its long ridge, before descending to the Sustary pass, located between Tardets and Barcus. The numerous shooting stations are occupied in October for the hunting of the pigeon. Going back up to the Madeleine, you pass on a plateau in the middle of the herds. At the top, do not miss the chapel with its votive altar and its galleries typical of Souletine churches. The orientation table allows you to spot all the important summits of the Pyrenees: Orhy, Anie, Pic du Midi d'Ossau...
