This loop, 14 km long at its longest point, forms a figure of 8 and offers many variations. The hiker can choose a route that suits them, as well as the departure point. The starting point has been arbitrarily fixed in Putanges on the Place de la Mairie.

Departing from Putanges, this 20-km circuit is a true test of your effort. Across the varied Suisse Normande landscapes, this circuit, punctuated with ascents and descents, will put your body to the test.

This rocky spur marks the border between the Bassin Parisien, located further east, and the Armorican Massif. From here, the landforms cut by the rivers create the characteristic landscapes of the “Suisse Normande”. The castle, dating from the 19th century, was built on the ancient remains of a fortified 12th century castle. It is still possible to see the towers which overlook the Orne valley. A 1.5 km route, equipped with numbered markers, will allow you to discover the natural and historical riches of the site.

The Vivier is a lovely path partly bordered in woods and horse chestnut trees.

Departure via the narrow uphill and downhill streets of William the Conqueror’s birthplace, before delving into the La Tour woods to along the Mont Saint-Michel path as far as Pierrepont. On your way back from this trail offering a medley of legend, history and superb landscapes, your horse’s hooves follow those of William’s own mount, as he made his epic ride from the Bay of Veys (Géfosse-Fontenay) to Falaise (208km).

The Paysan abbot, was made priest of Menil Gondouin in 1873. He decorated the inside and outside of the church himself. Between 1873 and 1921, the ground and the walls are covered with saint writings and quotes painted or engraved. In order to bring the decoration to perfection, the abbot brought in many statues, paintings, creeds. His church became "alive and talking", organised like a huge reliquary, a Christian museum, unique.

Overlooking the great meandering bends in the River Orne between Ecouché and Putanges Pont Ecrepin), the impressive Mesnil-Glaise Rock provides stunning views over one of the Suisse Normande's most beautiful landscapes. Guided tours are offered by the Maison de la Rivière et du Paysage, helping you explore the geological history and remarkable flora and fauna in this protected area.

The artificial lake at Rabodanges sits in an unspoilt natural setting, lined with forests and rocks. It stretches over five communes and covers almost 240 acres, making it the largest lake in Basse-Normandie. It is 6km in length and around 250 metres wide. It is home to the headquarters of the Motonautique Club de Basse Normandie, where you can water-ski when the warm weather arrives. There are two restaurants on the water's edge. One directly overlooks the lake and the other has inflatables for children. People stroll in the sun along the shores, close to the landing stage, from where cruise-boats take tourists up and down the waters. Kayaks and fishermen join this peaceful scene, the latter casting their lines either from the banks or from rowing boats. Fishing here covers two categories and is regulated, including night-fishing for carp.

The Gorges of Saint-Aubert, a steep-sided seven kilometre valley, leads from the lake at Rabodanges. It is a wild and majestic backdrop, featuring both rocky and wooded hillsides. The granite-based rock adds to the highly distinctive appearance, such as at Pierre Plate, where granite blocks have been polished by the waters into moss-covered, rounded shapes. Traces of otters can be found here, a species believed to be threatened with extinction in the Orne valley. This is a sign of a preserved environment. Access from the dam at Rabodanges: with the viewing platform on the left, take the path a hundred metres or so to the right.

The dam’s history begins in 1919. Over a 4km stretch, between entering and exiting the St Aubert gorges, the Orne river bed runs steeply downhill, descending by about 40 metres. Taking advantage of the narrow valley at the entrance to the gorge, and the natural reservoir upstream, engineers were able to design an ambitious dam with substantial water retention. The reservoir stores up to six million cubic metres of water over an area of 95 hectares, held back by a 160 metre-long and 17 metre-high dam. The entire project, located in Plessis, can be viewed from the belvedere accessible via a footpath to the left of the site entrance.

This former marl (limestone) quarry now serves as a refuge for a number of endangered species. After the orchids in the spring, summer sees fragrant carpets of thyme and oregano that attract hordes of insects to feed. You can also find the very rare bitter gentian, preserved here thanks to the grazing of the Ouessant and solonge sheep from the conservatory. Open to the public all year round.
