Camping Municipal de Haspelschiedt: Nature and Discovery

This pleasant path starting at the Haspelschiedt pond will take you on a journey to discover some remarkable trees in the Pays de Bitche Discover the Haspelschiedt pond, the basilica-style Saint-Nicolas church, the small Saint-Wendelin chapel and its picnic table. Along the way, you will encounter some remarkable trees such as the Kayser oak. This pedunculate oak, which is nearly 350 years old, has a circumference of 4.35 m. Emperor Wilhelm II is said to have visited this spot in 1903, from where he could see a large military training ground. Further along, on the Gruenholz path, you will walk along an avenue of Douglas firs, some of the tallest in France. Important: part of the Polisher Rock collapsed at the end of 2019. It is no longer accessible during the walk.

This trail follows an ancient Roman road all the way to the other side of the border, in Germany, along the picturesque path that runs alongside the majestic Altschlossfelsen rock, which can be translated to "old castle rock" because a small castle once existed there. It is also known with the nickname "The Colorado Rock". Starting from the 18th-century church in Roppeviller, with its Romanesque bell tower, the route joins the Helmut Kohl path. Less than a kilometre further on rises the Altschlossfelsen rock. . This rock is one of the largest in the Palatinate Massif. It stretches for almost 1.5 km and is up to 20 metres high in places. The countless caves, overhangs and other geological curiosities of the Altschlossfelsen are sure to surprise you! The Diana Rock and the three figures carved into the rock represent Diana the Goddess of the Hunt, Mars the God of War and Sylvanus the God of the Forest (or Hercules). This wonderful hiking trail is a "must" of Bitcherland (Pays de Bitche)! After walking by the Hasselfurther pond and the Entenbaechel pond, a small winding path will lead you to the Hochkopf; it is considered the highest point of Bitche (429 metres). - The Hasselfurther pond is located near Bitche and is one of the most beautiful local water areas. The pond is suitable for sports and outdoor activities and attracts many nature lovers who come to relax there all year round. The village of Walschbronn and the three valleys leading to it are dominated by the ruins of the Weckersburg castle. Built around 1490 by the Count of Deux-Ponts Bitche to protect the curists and serve as a hunting castle, it was destroyed by fire a century later. From Walschbronn, the walker reaches Dorst, a small hamlet where one can discover a picturesque chapel and a remarkable Mennonite cemetery. Thanks to its thermal waters, Walschbronn was famous from Roman times until the middle of the 18th century.

This mountain bike discovery trail (follow the blue markers) invites you to explore an extraordinary variety of natural and heritage sites: the ruins of Waldeck castle, the Erbsenfelsen rocks, the Hanau pond.

On this historical trail, you will discover the entire external defences of the Simserhof, one of the most important structures of the Maginot Line. The 8 fighting blocks, the gun turrets, the anti-tank rails and the 'pig tails' have remained unchanged since the end of the war. The fighting blocks around the Simserhof were intended to ensure the defence of the border. They all have cannons and machine guns. Positions 4 and 5 on this trail are particularly impressive. Along the path you will find explanatory panels about the Maginot Line. Picnic tables are set up near the Simserhof for a pleasant break. In season, the site is open to visitors and includes a cafeteria and a boutique. In a pleasant forest environment punctuated by ponds where wooded hills shimmer, the walker reaches the ruins of the Château de Falkenstein, the most imposing of the castles in the Pays de Bitche. Built in the 12th century on the orders of the Count of Lutzelbourg, in order to protect his possessions in the Haguenau Holy Forest, the castle was destroyed by a violent fire in 1564. The building burned for five days and nights.

A beautiful forest trail to discover the natural and historical riches at the Hanau and Lieschbach ponds and the charming old village of Waldeck. - A wooden pontoon allows access to the Lieschbach pond, which is classified as a nature reserve. - Falkenstein was built in the 12th century on a 117-metre rocky ridge and is the most important castle complex in Bitcherland. In 1564, only a few weeks after its sale to Philipp IV of Hanau-Lichtenberg, the castle was destroyed by a fierce fire after being struck by lightning. Some steps cut into the rock and an access ramp allow you to climb to the top of the ruin, where there are still some interesting remains. Along the way there are the following to discover : - The historical boundary stones from the 17th century marked the border between the former territories (County of Hanau and Duchy of Lorraine) at the time. - The pea rock with its round arch, where the rare peregrine falcon and the raven nest. - Waldeck Castle from the 13th century - The path to the peat pit of the Hanau pond You can download the GPX trail here :

A forest walk for the whole family to discover the natural and historical riches of the Pays de Bitche! Leave the parking direction of the D162F, then follow the green ring markings. Walk through the bog forest, cross the forest road and then the meadow to reach the hamlet of Waldeck, which was originally a farmhouse built below Waldeck Castle. At the pass, climb the forest trail hairpin left to visit the castle Waldeck. Nice view from the platforms (be careful, the stairs are narrow and sometimes steep). Then go back in 2 and turn left then right towards Erbsenfelsen. At this last crossroads you can continue left to see Waldeck Pond.After the rocky Erbsenfelsen and its arch, turn right towards the pond of Hanau. At the junction with the forest road of Hanau, a boundary marker stands next to a partially buried blockhouse. Continue straight on the Waldecker Hubel Forest Road and return to the car park.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

Altschlossfelsen translated from German means "old castle rock". It can be reached by the little village de Roppeviller. On reching one of the biggest sandstone rocks in the Palatinate, you will have crossed the German border. Having all the same geological features as the Northern Vosges, you will be astounded by this amazing re rock outcrop measuring 1500metres in length. Access: On foot, by the little village of Roppeviller to the north of Bitche. Nearby the Diane rock: 3 fgures sculptured in the stone representing Diane, Mars and Hercules. Note: During the period of March to july, protected species such as ravens and peregrine falcons may be nesting in the area so you must respect the site

Located in a building in the former district of the 4th Cuirassiers regiment, close to the Citadel of Bitche, it is in this historical place that the MAUSA on the Bitche invites internationnally renowned artists to awaken the "asleep" heritage. Momentarily closed.

Looking down on to the town's football pitch, this small less known fort is an annex to the Citadel. Built between 1850 and 1853 on a hill to the north west of the town, it has a very important stategic position. During the seige in 1870-1871, this stronghold stopped the enemy approaching too close. The camp below gave shelter to thousands of men for nine months.

At the foot of the Citadel, this contemporary garden proposes a festival of thematic, ephemeral creations. Associating the glass and crystal with rustic plants and forged iron and grasses, a dozen artistic gardens are regularly recreated by the town gardeners. Sharing their knowledge, their ingenuity and ideas, the Garden of Peace is original and fun. The visitors are more and more impatient to discover the new garden each year. The "Accueillet" is a new reception where souvenirs and seasonal savours can be found. It also has a cafeteria inspired from the horticultural and artistic creations. "Jardin de Troc"(street gardens): prolong you walk and discover the street gardens, colonies of creativity, the core of floriculture in Bitche.

A true military master piece, the Citadel is the most important historical site in Pays de Bitche. In the past, Pays de Bitche was the setting for many wars and invasions and of which the castle on the site of Bitche Citadel was a centrepiece. Neither the Swedish, the region of Lorraine, the French nor the Germans were able overthrow this stronghold. In 1680, the castle was replaced by the Citadel designed by Vauban. It was dismantled in 1697, but rebuilt in 1740 by the architect Cormontaigne. The most glorious feat was conducted by Commander Teyssier and his garrison during the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. While the rest of France was capitulated, they resisted for 230 days. On the platform of the Citadel, the historical museum “The Men during the 1870 War” has records and photos, and a collection of arms and uniforms worn by the men on the battlefield. The recently restored Vauban Chapel exposes an original relief map of Bitche dating to 1794 which is now classified as a Historical Monument.

The UNC Bitche invites you to discover the history of the battles for the Liberation of the Pays de Bitche during the winter of 1944-1945, through an exhibition of relics, equipment, photos, documents of the period of WW2 and exclusively found in local barns or attics of the area. Come and discover the anecdotes of these objects which have crossed history and have thus been brought out of oblivion. Possibility of opening the Espace Mémoire on request (contact by telephone).

In the church cemetery, Schorbach ossuary has one of the most interesting medieval architecture in the area. Being the old mother parish of Bitche, the ossuary was built around about 1125. The archtecture dates back to the 15th century. The beautiful Roman columns (each in different style) show the importance given to ossuaries in that time. The ossuary is filled with more than 100m3 of bones and skulls. In 1889, it was the first building in Pays de Bitche to be classified as an historical monument.

In 2010, the meticulous high standards produced by the town gardeners was rewarded by the Golden Flower Award, a supreme distinction given by the National Board for Towns and Villages in Bloom. Their excellence in creating contemporary gardens by incoporating the town heritage, is admired by all throughout the streets. A numbered trail with twenty or so floral gardens with surprising bold ephemeral compositions can be admired from June to September in the town, the public parks and in the garden for Peace and a map is available at the tourist Office.

The locals call this chapel, Notre dame of Pity. Built in 1515, it was situated next to the town lake but the lake was drained in 1820. The date of its construction which is difficult to read, is written in latin on two sanstne slabs. At the end of the chapel is a statue of the Virgin "Pity" scupltured in the 17th century out of limewood.

The camping car service area is located in the "espace des Genêts", the tourism part of the campsite, at 5 minutes walk from the pond. We have 54 pitches, all equipped with water and electricity. The sanitary facilities are composed of 6 bathrooms with toilets, shower and washbasin + a common area for washing up. All our campers can use the leisure and swimming area as well as the sandy beach for free.
