On this route, which can be followed in both directions over 18 km, you will be able to enjoy a cycle path on the banks of the Meurthe and Moselle, in a bucolic setting bursting with heritage and industrial treasures. Along the way, discover Place Stanislas and the Parc de la Pépinière, the Meurthe, the Douëra cultural centre and the medieval town of Liverdun.

This fortified mediaeval city overlooks one of the loops of the Moselle. It was once the summer residence of the Bishops of Toul. The high part of the town boasts a wealth of heritage that visitors can explore on a visual and interactive route. Follow the “madeleine route” (a local speciality) and discover seven iconic signposts, and scan 14 QR codes on the sides of houses to get architectural details.

First of all, to park, there is quite a lot of space, and if the weather is nice, there are a few small streets perpendicular to the Grande Rue in Lucey that allow you to put the car in the shade. The circuit starts with a few paths going up behind the village towards the forest on 200-300 meters. Once you are in the forest, the principle is to zigzag up and wait for the plateau where the fort is located. The latter is covered by vegetation, and will only be very little visible. You will cross here and there some constructions annexed to the fort to brighten up the walk =) /! Watch out! The walk goes around the fort, but not inside. It is not advisable to try to venture inside, especially with small children or animals: there are many holes and not all parts inside are stable. And until the last news, it's not very legal ;-) The circuit layout will help you to find your way, but you can very well take the many small paths. You'll see them appear on the map (for example on the OSM / OCM map background, they're almost all there). Once you've done the lap, you just have to go back down to the village. Le Bois Saint-Ignon: A 6.8 km trail through woods and other areas for exploring, making for a varied itinerary. It is also a smooth and easy circuit for mountain bikes. It is also pleasant for horse riding, but there’s a dangerous crossing of the D907. Cense Saint Paul: 6.5 km trail. On foot, this is a lovely walk with many glimpses of the village of Saizerais and even the Mousson hillock to the north. It is a smooth and easy circuit for mountain bikes, particularly in the anti-clockwise direction, but watch out for the horses that often use sections of the loop. On horseback, it is a rather short circuit, almost half tarmac, and the likelihood of encountering a number of other riders. Explore this walking and cycling path, a bucolic 19.5-km-long stabilised sand route created along a former railway. It begins in Custines at the end of the Rue Claude Le Lorrain cul-de-sac, which has around twenty parking spaces, and currently ends in Nomeny. It runs through the lovely Mauchère valley, which takes its name from the little 8-km-long stream that runs through Custines, Malleloy, Faulx and Montenoy. The rolling countryside offers viewpoints over the orchards, fields, villages and woods. This “Voie Verte” path takes you on a discovery tour of local rural animals, including sheep, cows and horses. In fact, there is a strong probability that you will come across riders on the section that is open to them, near to the Diapason and Paquis stables in Faux.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Gondreville is an old Lorraine's medieval village, whose historical origins date back to Gallo-Roman times, is situated on the right bank of the Moselle between Toul and Liverdun. Once the residence of the first Frankish kings, it became in the twelfth century a stronghold of the Dukes of Lorraine who retained until 1766, when the attachment of the duchy to France was recorded. Walking through the village center, you can explore the memories of a historical past that, over time, was printed in the architecture of the houses and the lifestyle of the inhabitants. Its narrow streets and alleys, its door, the remains of its walls, its old courthouse, some old houses have retained it a real charm of authenticity.

17km south-east from Toul on the « Boucle de la Moselle » (Moselle river loop). Free access every day. In the 16th century, this mansion was surrounded by dry moats or moats filled with water according to the circumstances.

The apse of Saint-Etienne Cathedral, which has long been hidden from view, today offers visitors views of the beautiful foothills in a green setting. Created in 2017/2018 the Garden of the Foothills mixes the evocation of the Middle Ages with a touch of modernity where plants inspired by the gardens of the common people are in harmony with metal plessis (interwoven fences) and grassed ramps. As Toul is located on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route the Foothills Garden features plants commonly found by pilgrims such as Betula pendula (common birch) and Salvia sclarea (clary sage).

The current town hall is the former Episcopal palace whose construction was started by his Grace Scipion Jérôme Bégon in 1739. The work is based on Nicolas Pierson’s plans. The begonias (see below) around the main pond are a reminder of the bond between Toul and the many species of these flowers. The park also has a rich heritage and includes a Ginkgo biloba which is known as the ‘remarkable tree of France’. The Ginkgo biloba of Toul was reportedly brought from Toulon by Admiral Henri de Rigny (born in Toul in 1782 - winner of the Battle of Navarin in 1827 and Minister of Marine and Foreign Affairs under Louis Philippe). Michel Begon was a Governor in the West Indies (under King Louis XIV) and it was he who sponsored the botanist Charles Plumier who went onto to discover the small herbaceous plants. The latter once back in France named the new plant ‘Begonia’ in tribute to his benefactor. This is the first botanical dedication in honour of a person and which then became a tradition.

A haven of peace next to the Town Hall park the André Legrand rose garden is a garden which inspires tranquility and serenity. Opened in 2016 it has been entirely created by the local municipal authority and it carries the name of the former Head of Green Spaces Department of the City of Toul. In this garden there are 66 varieties of rose bushes including the rose of Toul. The Toul rose is a rose bush with double flowers which look like peonies and are very fragrant. The many petals of warm colours do not like the sun but in spite of their number the flowers open well and can tolerate the rain.

Ginkgo Biloba is naturalized in southeast China, in the Tianmushan Mountains. The Toul Ginkgo Biloba is said to have been brought back by Henri de Rigny, who was born in Toul in 1782 and died in 1835. Admiral de Rigny was created a count and appointed maritime prefect in Toulon in 1829. In the Annales de la Société d'Horticulture de Paris of 1834, a certain Monsieur Robert, director of the Navy garden in Toulon, reports that he owned a ginkgo biloba measuring "3 feet 6 inches 4 lines" (107.7 cm) in circumference, "at man's height and 58 feet in elevation" (17.68 meters), in October 1831. According to the document, the tree was planted in 1804. Admiral de Rigny is said to have brought a cutting or seedling of the Toulon tree back to Toul. At a ceremony held on June 07, 2015, the Toul ginkgo became the 375th "Remarkable Tree" to be labeled in France. Reaching a height of 21.84 meters at the time of its labeling, the Toul ginkgo delights with its shimmering colors around mid-November, depending on seasonal temperatures. Its typical golden foliage was a source of inspiration for Art Nouveau artists, notably the École de Nancy. Inspiration that is still sometimes found in Daum productions.

The door of Nancy became Moselle’s door and this city entrance was rebuilt in 1882-1883 in the medieval style. With the loss of the defensive function of the ramparts in the 19th century the battlements and machicolations now only have a decorative role. The landscaping of this garden which was designed in 2005 makes it a convivial space and emphasises a remarkable entrance to the city. The art work ‘Between the lines’ by the sculptor Gé Pellini is on loan from the city council of Meurthe and Moselle and highlights the tribute from the city to the well known writer Emile Moselly. The Moselly Garden is named in honour of the writer Emile Moselly (real name Emile Chenin 1870-1918) who is buried in a nearby village called Chaudeney-sur-Moselle where he often lived. The author was deeply rooted in rural Lorraine and was awarded the Goncourt Prize for literature in 1907 for ‘Jean des brebis ou le livre de la misère’ and ‘Terres Lorraines’. The local Studies Circle of Toul awards a prize every year for the best novel about the Lorraine region.

Created in 2011 at the end of restoration work on the north side of the Cathedral this garden is on two levels and offers beautiful views of the august monument. The first level garden allows the visitors to wander through ‘plessis’ (fences made of interwoven branches) whose planting is inspired by the medieval tradition. At the end of the garden is the Bishops Chapel which is waiting to be restored and which was created at the request of Bishop Hector d’Ailly in 1539 in the purest style of the Renaissance. The second level garden below is embellished with a collection of Camellias with 20 varieties on show which are chosen for their ability to adapt to the soil and climate of Toul. The name Camellia was named after the Jesuit missionary Georges Joseph Kaamel (who was better known as ‘Camellus’) by the Swedish naturalist Car Von Linné in 1753.
