Les Loges de Melis: Explore Cuzorn Lot-et-Garonne Treasures

This circuit crosses the valleys of the Lémance and Briolance rivers and winds its way through the wooded hillsides of the Périgord forest to discover numerous pigeon houses and traditional houses.

From the castle of Bonaguil to the church of Lastreilles, this rather physical forest walk takes place through oak forests, chestnut groves, hornbeams, but also in some pine forests.

This loop takes you along covered paths through the woods to link the village, set in the valley of the Lémance, to the sites of the church and the ruins of the castle set on a steep cliff.

This short thematic walk goes around the castle of Bonaguil through the traditional vegetation of the Haut-Agenais Périgord, oaks, chestnut trees, hornbeams, boxwoods, brooms, etc. Old iron ore quarries can be seen in the woods, reminding us of the region's iron and steel past. Seven thematic tables will help you discover the history of this area from 7000 years ago to the present day. The castle, "Major site of Aquitaine", exudes a rare serenity. It is built on a rocky spur in the middle of the forest, far from the main roads. It is the work of Baron Béranger de Roquefeuil who, from 1480 to 1520, transformed the initial 13th century castle into a masterpiece of military architecture, where medieval defensive attributes rub shoulders with fire artillery (remarkable dungeon in the shape of a ship's bow, curtains, barbican...).

In addition to two loops of 2 and 15 km, we offer an intermediate circuit of 8 km in a wooded area of the Périgord forest which hides the castle of Bonaguil.

This fortified castle, listed as a "Major Site of Aquitaine", stands on a rocky spur. It is unique in Europe, illustrating the evolution of defence techniques from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance.

From the Briolance valley, this circuit crosses numerous coppices and chestnut orchards and runs alongside a rich built heritage, the listed church and castle, the Naugarède estate, La Sauvetat... You can see the old tower of the Blanquefort blast furnace and the half-timbered and corbelled houses of the Nogarède estate along the wooded paths of the circuit. This sector of the Haut-Agenais is known for its low furnaces, whose existence can be explained by the presence in the "Pays du Bois" of iron ore and vast forests which provided the indispensable charcoal. These internal combustion furnaces were used to transform iron ore into metallic iron. They look like brick and clay chimneys, where a layer of iron ore and a layer of charcoal are alternately placed and ignited.

Laurent Coulonges, a native of Fumel, has devoted part of his life to archaeological research in the valley of the Lémance. In the 1920s, he discovered a new prehistoric culture on the Martinet site, to which he gave the name "Sauveterrien", in reference to Sauveterre-la-Lémance. Eighty-five hundred years ago, the last hunter-fishermen of the Lémance valley started a real revolution; they became farmers and breeders and exchanged their camps for villages. New techniques were developed, tools were adapted and the use of bows and arrows became widespread. The Laurent Coulonges museum presents in an educational way the collections from the deposits discovered in the commune.

This peaceful walk is full of surprises: beautiful houses with character, views of the wooded hills and the hamlet of La Ville, surrounded by its castle and its chapel, which is reached by a path lined with boxwood. Sauveterre is a region rich in prehistoric habitats that Laurent Coulonges, archaeologist, explores in the 1920s. He discovered on the site of Martinet a new prehistoric culture known throughout the world to which he gave the name of Sauveterrian (-8000 to -7000 years). The museum of Sauveterre-la-Lémance presents the result of its excavations and recalls the sedentarization of the hunter-gatherers of the Prehistory. We find the evolution of hunting techniques, the appearance of the bow and arrow. La Charmille, is located in the heart of a 10ha clearing, 6km from Bonaguil and its castle. This small house of 40 m² is a cosy and comfortable gite. In search of calm and rest, it is in the middle of nature that this lodging will allow you to relax or to discover nature in company of Didier who will initiate you in the picking of mushrooms and chestnuts. Beekeeper, you can also discover the hives and taste the honey. You will also be able to rent two bicycles. Former forester, Didier has fitted out this gite using wood as the main material. The mill, the bridge, the Lède river... serve as a backdrop to the discovery of Saint-Front-sur-Lémance. The original construction of the church dates back to the Romanesque period. It probably consisted of a single nave ending in a cul-de-four apse and two transept arms onto which two apsidioles must have opened. What remains of the Romanesque ornamentation suggests that the building was originally richly decorated. The door pierced in the gable of the façade dates from the 16th century. Two vaulted rooms are built above the vaults of the sanctuary. A crenellated terrace must have served both as a bell tower and as a lookout's cubbyhole.

L'Atelier de Marlyse welcomes you at the heart of the village of Bonaguil, on the path to the castle. The pottery shop, paired with a tea room, has a shaded, quiet terrace, far from the noise and with a stunning view of the castle. When the weather is bad, a small and cosy room inside is at your disposal. All the ceramics presented are created and made by Marlyse Le Mignot.

Lake Marou, with an area of 8.7 hectares, is the only Lot-et-Garonnais lake in the first fish category (associated regulations). Fishing for roach, carp, trout. Each practitioner must hold a fishing license.

The oldest restaurant in the Haut Agenais offers you a warm welcome, 300 metres from the magnificent castle of Gavaudun, in the middle of nature.
