Halfway between Bordeaux and Toulouse, Agen, the capital of the Lot-et-Garonne region, is brimming with treasures, from the Unesco World Heritage-listed Saint-Caprais cathedral to the timber-framed houses of Rue Beauville and the four Renaissance mansions that house the Musée des Beaux-arts. A visit here is an opportunity to discover one of the richest and most varied collections in the South-West. This 12.9 km circuit takes you from the old town to the Monbran and Ermitage plateaus, in between which you'll survey the Verona valley, carved out by the Courbarieux, a small tributary of the Garonne. The highlight of the trip is the crossing of the bridge-canal over the Garonne, the second longest bridge-canal in France. A host of discoveries to delight history and architecture buffs, gourmets and nature lovers alike.

The Verona loop invites you to walk through the Monbran and Hermitage plateaus, between the two you will walk through the Verona valley, carved out by the Courbarieux, a small tributary of the Garonne.

This walk on the hillside offers you the opportunity to discover the area, once known as "Little Nice" for its "Belle Epoque" villas, which was very popular in the 19th century for its bucolic setting.

Starting at the Place du Gravier on the banks of the Garonne, this route allows you to discover this two thousand year-old town’s historical sites by following the 19 special signs.

The Garonne and its canal punctuate this walk, which first follows the peaceful Garonne canal before crossing the river twice, on the canal bridge and then on the suspended footbridge. These remarkable structures show the ingenuity of man in settling on the banks of rivers and protecting himself from them, in order to cross them and to guarantee their navigability, digging a channel or even a canal in parallel to avoid both high and low water. The dykes where you will walk, the works that link the town of Le Passage to Agen, the Pont-de-Pierre whose first construction dates back to the beginning of the 19th century, the footbridge painstakingly built in 1841, restored at the beginning of this millennium, and the Pont-Canal, remarkable with its 23 stone arches and its 580 m length. Finally, the Garonne canal and its old canalet which allowed boats to reach the river.

Starting from the church of Monbran, this circuit crosses twice the valleys of the Ségone and its small tributary the Ridounel. It climbs the hills of Trégan, Cayssat and Monbran offering magnificent views. The history of the site of Monbran, a place appreciated by hikers for its panorama on the Garonne and its old stones, goes back to the XIIth-XIIIth century with the construction of the Romanesque church in local stones and the castle in 1217, which became the summer residence of the bishops of Agen. One of the most famous bishops, Mattéo Badello, wrote many short stories there, such as "Romeo and Juliet", which inspired William Shakespeare. Transformed into a sanatorium at the beginning of the century, the castle is now a convalescence center.

This auditorium hosts performances by the Pierre Debauche theatre company and theatre school.

Its upper gallery is decorated with 4 geminated arches in the flamboyant gothic style with Florentine-inspired ornaments. Was it the home of a rich merchant who traded with Italy? Certainly not that of a seneschal, who, as the king's representative in the provinces, had no official residence. Listed as a Historic Monument in 1913, it was acquired by the town and restored to its original state in 1972. Now annexed to the Museum of Fine Arts, it now houses a Gallo-Roman tile tomb, a Gothic filling, sarcophagi and the bell tower of the former Agen City Hall.
