An abandoned and dilapidated goshawk, which the knowledgeable handymen of the City Council have rehabilitated. This one culminates on a hillock, the fifth explanatory site described during the walk. Signs briefly tell the life of the Landes forest. The one of the ditches evokes swamps, the road to Compostela, shepherds, sanitation... The cork oaks are an excuse to learn about their economic role in Vieux-Boucau. Further on, the walker learns about the gluttony of the maritime pine swallowing its 45 tons per day for a wooded hectare. The fourth stop, in a clearing, reminds us of the damage caused by Klaus. The circuit climbs up to the pigeon house and the explanations of this traditional hunting. Welcome to Vielle Saint Girons, a small village on the Landes coast, between ocean and forest. We welcome you for a comfortable family holiday, just 9km from the beaches and 3km from the lake, where you can discover all the water sports. There are plenty of cycle paths nearby, allowing you to discover the wild Landes océanes in complete safety.

Every village has its own original, its own madman, its own local eccentric, whose particularity is to spice up the life of the community. From the 1920s onwards, Léon was home to a curious character: Loys Labèque. A vagabond with anarchistic tendencies, an adventurer with a mystical streak, he was also touched by the Christian faith and wrote mysterious poems for the average person. Originally from Léon, he was to rest there until the end of his days, in 1941, at the Villa Agnoutine. For some inhabitants, the memory of this strange man haunting the streets remains, "yellow panama, glasses and black lavaliere, false collar and celluloid cuffs of unforgettable dimensions".

Under heavy surveillance from mid-March to mid-October, the Landes forest is dotted with watchtowers. About forty metres high, these metal behemoths are the guarantors of safety against fire outbreaks. Until 2004, seasonal workers were responsible for this surveillance, which has often proved its effectiveness. But the sudden death of one of them, probably due to lightning, changed all that, and since then the towers have been equipped with surveillance cameras. Supported by a system called Prodalis, which won the 2010 ENSOSP innovation prize, their sharp eyes have since replaced the human eye in this constant battle against the flames.

In the north of the village, in the quarter of Maâ, the old typical houses worth the visit. La Chapelle Saint Laurent de Maâ situated at the end of the street fetches from the XIIth century and was a famous stop for the pilgrims on the way of Saint Jacques de Compostelle. This chapel can be visited each monday in July and August.

The unmasking is carried out between the beginning of June and the end of August. This is the extraction of the cork and this operation requires the intervention of a qualified workforce so as not to injure the tree concerned, the cork oak. Every twenty years, the so-called "male" cork is extracted, which can only be used for decoration. It is only about ten years later that the reproductive layer, the "female" layer, can be used for the manufacture of high-quality corks or decorations. The cork oak is as present as the maritime pine in the Marensin, and has suffered from economic discrimination: it was much less profitable than the pine. However, it is not lacking in ecological qualities: a habitat for nocturnal birds of prey, attractive to fauna and flora... It could even be used as a firebreak! It is a natural thermal insulator.

With its exceptional landscapes and remarkable flora and fauna, the Courant d'Huchet Nature Reserve is Aquitaine's last remaining natural pond and stream. Guided walking tours depart from Pont de Pichelèbe on the D328 in Moliets. 2 hours, 2 km. Reception chalet at Pont de Pichelèbe open from April to September. Exhibition on the reserve's natural heritage: models and panels. Free admission. The reserve's footpaths remain open to walkers, except for the Nasse footbridge due to its instability (reopening postponed).

Ah, the Landes duck! An institution! Typical of South-Western cuisine, in pâté, confit, foie gras or rillons, it awakens the taste buds and excites the senses after the bucolic strolls. And for the curious who wonder what is going to end up on their plate, a free visit with a demonstration of force-feeding is possible, at the Ferme de Grit and elsewhere.
