The Vézelay route enters the Gironde at the bridge of Sainte-Foy-la-Grande. Over a good hundred kilometres, through the vineyards of Entre-deux-Mers, then beyond La Réole, through the Bazadais to the entrance to the Landes de Gascogne forest, the pilgrim discovers territories steeped in history and a considerable Jacobean heritage.

Leaving Bazas, a pleasant footpath offers you the opportunity to discover one of the eight most important natural sites in the Gironde: the Lac de la Prade created in 1981 for irrigation purposes. From the first year of its creation, the ecological interests of the Lac de la Prade were quickly identified: the first nesting site in Aquitaine for a colony of grey herons, a privileged place for rare and protected bird species (crested grebe, osprey, etc.), the existence of a rich and diversified flora and a remarkable fauna. Embedded in the middle of the hills, in the heart of the Beuve valley, this artificial lake of about fifty hectares offers to the amateur a quiet zone favourable to ornithological observation and the discovery of a variety of fauna and flora species.

Whether you are a history buff or simply a lover of beautiful stones, Bazas invites you to discover it with the help of the proposed tour. Gardens, mansions, ramparts, fountains and other monuments will tell you the history of the city. Let your steps guide you to the cathedral and explore its many treasures.

Departure is from the Bazas greenway towards Bernos-Beaulac, leading you to our iconic home of the Kings of Navarre: Château de Cazeneuve. After a visit to Queen Margot?s emblematic residence and some time under the park?s giant bamboo grove, it?s on to the refreshing gorges on the banks of the Ciron. This is an easy circuit, with a shady path running alongside the mythical river, a favorite with canoeists. The loop continues along fern-lined paths and back to the Cité jacquaire.

Departing from the beautiful Place de la Cathédrale Saint-Jean-Baptiste in Bazas, a former stopover on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, this loop takes you over gently undulating terrain to the the Château de Roquetaillade. The greenway occupies an old railroad line and winds through a landscape of pine trees and vineyards. All around you, the old tobacco drying sheds, the picturesque church of Le Nizan, Château Caillivet and its vineyard, and a circuit offering the most beautiful views of Château de Roquetaillade.

A former collegiate church, now listed as a historical monument, which houses the tomb of Pope Clement V. Treasury Room with precious liturgical objects which belonged to the various churches in the canton of Villandraut. Open all year round from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guided tours on request. Also on request, lectures with slideshows on the subject: Clement V and the church of Uzeste, Eleanor of Aquitaine and the 2nd crusade, the Templars, the trial of the Templars, the Black Prince.

Château Guiraud takes its name from a Bordeaux negociant, Pierre Guiraud, who purchased the estate in 1766. Included among the first growths in the 1855 classification, Château Guiraud has more than a hundred hectares of vines. This entailed building an insect hotel, planting five kilometers of hedges, developing genetic diversity, studying and propagating vines in a conservatory, etc. Château Guiraud is currently the only first growth in the 1855 classification to be officially certified for organic viticulture. Feudal and Renaissance styles in one place! Listed as a Historic Monument, the Château de Castets-en-Dorthe, proudly set above the junction of the Garonne and the Canal des Deux Mers, offers an exceptional viewpoint The current buildings date from the 16th century but they rest on the foundations of a fortified place built in the 14th century by Guilhem de Goth, nephew of Pope Clement V. Henri IV stayed there in 1585.

Installed in Bazas in 1553 near the Town Hall, the new Palais du Présidial of 1733 dominates the square. Its Louis XV-style façade is laid out in three equal bays whose ashlar apparatus perfectly illustrates the architectural style of the 18th century.

Built between the 11th and the 14 th Century on the site of a Roman Sanctuary (parts of which are still visible), and re-built by Bishop Arnaud de Pontac and his successors between 1583 and 1655, after the destruction by the Huguenots during the Religious Wars. The Cathedral was classified as an historical monument in 1840 and this magnificient Gothic structure is the most important in the town. Listed by UNESCO in 1998, as part of a World Heritage Site, the Cathedral testifies to the rich architectural history of the town of Bazas.

Located in the South Gironde, the small village of Saint-Côme dominates the valley of the Sauviac stream. It is when you arrive from Grignols, in the direction of Bazas, that you enjoy a nice view of the village Do not hesitate to make a detour in the village to observe its small Romanesque church, the oldest building in the village. 60 km south-east of Bordeaux, Bazas thrives between the Landes forest and the vineyards of the Graves. This partly Romanesque church is attributed to the Knights Templar. It was partly rebuilt in the 16th century and restored in 1954. The apse of the 11th or 12th century includes two rows of superimposed arcatures. The capitals are of barbarian style (pine cones, sheep, facing lions). The west facade is crowned by a gable which surmounts a door (XIVth) with turned capitals. The bell tower was built at the same time as the aisles (with rib vaults on round piles), on the south side of the choir (14th century). Among the elements that make up the furniture are two wooden altarpieces dating from the 18th century.

This church, built by the Templars in the 12th century, has since been remodelled.
