Les Copains d'Abord: nature and exploration in Champagnat

This walk follows the paths once travelled by Jean Guitton during his holidays in Creuse, at the Château de Fournoux.Go up the walled road for 20 m. and take the small sunken path on the left. Continue straight on for about 2 km until you reach the D19.Take the road on the left and then immediately turn right towards La Roche. Go through La Roche, keeping left, and follow the green signs to the hamlet of Montfrand.Go down the road on the left (the route follows the GR 46 marked in red and white).Before the village of Théolet, take a right turn after a small tarmac road for about 700 m to reach the D28.Cross the bridge on the left. Leave the major road and continue on the departmental road for about 500 m.Turn onto a sunken path below you to the left. Cross a stream and go straight on up. You'll reach a small asphalt road: go across it. Continue to follow the path until you reach the road.Fork left towards Le Deveix, go through the hamlet and go down to the valley of the Tardes (the viewpoint overlooking the Château de Fournoux).At the D19, turn left and cross the bridge. Continue for 300 m and turn right to reach the hamlet of La Châtre.

GRP® Marche et Combraille en Aquitaine: Two loops of long-distance hikes in the Creuse region, bordering the Auvergne; 189km in all. It's possible to hike a single loop, or to combine an itinerary that will let you discover the landscapes of these two great hikes. The Combraille and Franc-Alleu loops join up over a distance of around 15km. Please note that in some places you'll need to take sections of the GR® (marked in white and red), so you can discover the GR® 41: Vallée du Cher or the GR® 46: De Tours à Toulouse.

The Goat Eaters hike invites you to discover Bellegarde en Marche and St Silvain Bellegarde, two towns with a closely linked history.Leave by the path in front of the church gate. After 150 m turn right, follow the path and then the road to the D 9 crossroads. Continue straight ahead and then turn right "Chemin de l'abattoir".Turn left into "Rue Basse", cross the road and take "Rue du Château".On the right take the GR; leave it at the railway crossing on the left.Go into Malleret on the left and then on the right, past a stable block. Take the path that goes downhill. Turn left at the crossroads. Cross the D9.At the end of the path turn left; at the stop sign turn to the right.Pass the cemetery and go up to La Chapelle to admire the view.Take the road that goes down to reach the village.At the crossroads, take the "Route du Breu" to the right. Leave the village "Les Bierges". A few metres further on, turn left onto a path that climbs up, keep left for 1 km 400 m and enter Bellegarde.In front of the Clock Tower, turn right twice. Take the GR 46 for 1 km.Leave the GR, take the path on the left. Follow it to the road. Go a few metres to the right and take the path on the left to St Silvain.

Start: Place de la Mairie Markings: yellow 1 - Take the path opposite the west gate of the church; after 150 m, turn right and continue as far as the crossroads with the D9; cross the road 2 - After 20 m, take the track on the right, continuing as far as "Chez Aufaure" 3 - Cross the road and turn right to Moulin du Faux; cross the Tardes river 4 - Take the road on the left (D 38) and continue as far as the Moulin de Chez Lucet; cross the bridge, take the track and continue as far as the D 988 5 - Cross the D988, take the track opposite for 250 m; return to the road 6 - At the entrance to Bellegarde, turn left into "Rue Basse", then left again into "Chemin de l'Abattoir" 7 - Turn left onto "Rue des Bouquets"; cross the D9 and return to St Silvain Bellegarde

Start / Finish: Guinguette de La Naute, Champagnat Signs : Chemins Douce Heure 1 - Walk alongside the buildings and continue below the tennis court. Go right down between the 2 ponds to join the path leading to the tail of the pond. 2 - Continue along the path alongside the pond. 3 - Take the road on the left, then the 1st track on the right 4 - Go through Malleteix, then over the pond dike. 5 - Take the small road on the right towards the Etang de La Naute.

Start: Etang de la Naute 1 - Take the chaussée de l?étang and at Pierre Plate, turn left onto the D 24 directon Frettel 2 - Continue straight ahead on the D993 to Croix de la Fortune 3 - Turn left, cross La Chaussade and continue to St Alpinien 4 - Turn left towards Planet and continue to the crossroads with the D 988 5 - Take the D988 to the left and take the 1st road on the left, cross Montignat and continue to the junction with the D39 6 - Turn left and, at the junction, continue straight on along the D39, then turn right to reach Bosroger 7 - Take the D40 on the right to reach the starting point via Chez Masfranc and Champagnat

The 'Augustin et Julienne' house is located in one of the former farmhouses of the Château du Tirondet estate. On the first floor, there's a spacious living room with dining area and an adjacent fully-equipped open kitchen. An old passageway gives access to the former milk cellar, where the shower room and toilet are now located. On the second floor, there are three spacious bedrooms, all equipped with good new beds with extra thick mattresses, a wardrobe and a safe. The rooms have a small desk or comfortable sitting area, and one room has an extra armchair that can be folded into an extra bed. This gîte has a private courtyard with a terrace, comfortable furniture and a good barbecue. There is no television in this house.

The gîte is located in one of the former stables of the Château du Tironet estate. The house is luxuriously furnished with natural materials and features concrete floors on the first floor and wooden floors upstairs. First floor: living room with dining area, adjoining open kitchen with all amenities. Second floor: three spacious bedrooms all equipped with good new beds with extra thick mattresses, wardrobe and safe. One of the bedrooms also has an extra armchair that can be folded out to become an extra bed. One of the bedrooms has separate single beds, which can be converted into twin beds on request. The gîte has a private terrace, comfortable furniture and a good barbecue. An old passageway gives access to the former tack room, which can be added to make an extra bedroom.

The "Paulette" apartment is located behind the chapel and was once the official residence of the estate's caretaker/cook. The apartment, located on the second floor, has been completely renovated while preserving the old details. The apartment comprises a bathroom, separate toilet, kitchenette with dining area, bedroom and separate living room. If required, the luxurious sofa bed in this living room can be folded out to create a second bedroom. The apartment has a shared terrace adjacent to the château entrance, with comfortable furniture.

La Sellerie is located next to the former stables. The former tack room has been converted into a small studio with kitchenette. On the second floor is the sleeping area with a large double bed. From the sleeping area, a mezzanine gives a feeling of space and a view of the small living room on the first floor. The tack room can be reached by a few steps and a double door from the gîte d'accompagnement l'Ecurie, making this combination ideal for people traveling together but still seeking privacy. This studio has a terrace shared with the neighboring "Paulette" apartment, adjacent to the château entrance with comfortable furniture.

The Notre Dame Chapel was built between 1870 and 1880 on the highest point of the village. This site offers a panoramic view of Bellegarde-en-Marche and its surroundings. A base with crosses in carved stone bearing the shield of the Viscounts of Aubusson is visible in front of the chapel.

In the Middle Ages, Bellegarde was the capital of the Franc-Alleu. This name designates a territory of full ownership, free of any obligation of paying royalties, unlike the fiefdom.

The public weighbridge is an architectural structure. In the Creuse region, it is usually located in the center of a village, or near a church or market place. It was used to determine the weight of any road vehicle or animals such as pigs or cows, or hay and straw etc., and then sell them at a price based on their weight. The Creuse region has kept a number of these, sometimes even in working order. This one is in very good condition.

Inside St-Martial church, a 17th-century Vierge de Pitié (Virgin of Pity) draws attention for its originality. The group is enhanced by a violet-painted base. The Virgin sits on a simple, undecorated bench. She is dressed in a gilded gown with lace-embroidered collar and a mantle, which doubles as a veil and is pleated at the knees. The Virgin wears a headdress with a scalloped veil adorned with lace. This is a rare example of the Mother of Christ wearing a popular garment, as the headdress is from Auvergne. Her half-open mouth testifies to her pain and affliction. The workmanship of Christ is more clumsy: he lies on his Mother?s lap, his head turned to the left. His chestnut hair is crowned with a green twist, planted with thorns and rendered with iron nails. His left arm is stretched along his body.

Certain architectural details seem to date the building back to the 13th century (colonnettes, pedestals and capitals). Originally, this chapel was placed under the patronage of Notre-Dame. In 1810, it became a parish church, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin. It has been restored several times, notably in the 19th century. In 1861, a 2-storey square tower was erected in front of the bell tower-wall. This protects the oldest bell in the region (14th century). Above the porch, the coat of arms of Felletin reminds us that Abbé Roy-Pierrefitte, Curé-Doyen of Bellegarde in 1862, was originally from this town. The wall at the rear of the church overlooking a passageway features a stone engraved with the date 1000. There are two statues and a painting to discover: > Immaculate Conception - painted and gilded wood (late 18th-19th century) >St-Jean-Baptiste (18th century)

Despite being destroyed several times, the building has kept its original Limousin Romanesque form. Dedicated to St Oradoux, it features sculpted capitals with realistic scenes, sometimes quite crude. Note that it is fairly richly furnished (an 18th-century altarpiece including an altar, statue-reliquaries, a tabernacle and so on).
