Roaming along the roads of the historical centre, this city tour will take you on a discovery of Pontarlier’s emblematic locations: architectural, historical and symbolic city buildings, the banks of the Doubs and a viewpoint over the city. From the Tourist Office (), descend rue de la Gare to rue de la République.Head to Place d’Arçon, on your left. From here, you can see the Saint-Pierre gate at the end of the road.From the square, take rue de la Halle near the theatre. At the end of the road, head to the old barracks via place des Bernardines and place Cretin, on your right. Go to the bridge across the Doubs by heading through place Jules Pagnier and rue de Morteau.From here, make a round trop (1.2 km) to the Armand Guy distillery via rue des Lavaux.On returning to rue de Morteau, enter the park on the edge of the Doubs and follow the embankments on a little adapted path; this will take you to the other side of the park. Join up with rue de la République by leaving the park through rue Julez Mathez, where you will find the Jeanne d’Arc high school.   On arriving at rue de la République, head left until you reach another bridge over the Doubs. From here, make a round trip to the Hospital to observe its facade and the two chapels that can be seen from the road.On returning to rue de la République, after crossing the bridge once more, head down rue Montrieux and take rue Gambetta on your right to reach place Saint-Bénigne and the church. From the square, head to the train station vie rue Tissot. From here, you can head directly to the Tourist Office via rue de la Gare. You can also make a round trip of under 2 km to the Chapelle de l’Espérance, with a stunning viewpoint over the whole city. It can be accessed by heading down rocade George Pompidou until you come to rue du Stand, then head under the railway and take rue de la Chapelle (yellow waymarking) directly to the viewpoint.

Bike-tour that leads you all around the element water. Natural sources, little lakes, the canal, the watershed (source of Madon flowing to the North, source of Saône flowing to the South) and a natural warm water source in the woods.

Route marked out by a blue ring. At the start, follow the markings common to all the routes: a red triangle, then after the thermal park, follow the blue ring. This route leads to the Hameau de La Forêt overlooking the spa town of Bains Les Bains. Crossing the thermal park, it takes you through the Bertramont forest, along a path that runs alongside the river Bagnerot. As you enter the hamlet of La Forêt, you get to a large plateau at a 400m altitude, between pastures and orchards, with a wide panorama over the surrounding hills.

Starting point from the Tourism Office, take the pedestrian walkway passing in front of the impressive Bain de la Promenade, to reach the large Thermal Park and its water feature. After the Art Deco style Potinière building, follow the Bagnerot stream (clockwise) or go up on the left (anticlockwise) to join the bypass and reach the Bertramont forest opposite.

It passes through villages and hamlets and is almost entirely on small tarmac country roads (except for a section through fields, where it is possible to pass through the Bourguignotte playground and picnic area, with its drinking water point).

The route is marked by a red ring in both directions. Via a small country road, this picturesque route offers a very changeable rural setting. A path enters a damp undergrowth and leads to the River Coney, which is crossed by an unusual footbridge. Then the Eastern Canal leads to the old Roman road, which is the way back.

Trail market out in both directions by a blue ring, which can be combined with circuit 7 (Caution: red triangle marking at the start of the Bains-Les-Bains tourism office since this section is shared with other trails, then blue ring marking at the Parc Thermal) Through the countryside, between meadows and undergrowth, this rather shady walk is almost mostly small tarmac country roads, so it can be done with a pushchair for example. At the Grands Prés, a beautiful restored house, then traditional charri farms mark out this route with a slight difference in level. Nice view over the highest point of Le Noirmont.

Trail marked out by a green ring. At the start, follow the signs shared by all the trails: red triangle, then after the thermal park, follow the green ring. This trail is accessible to all and shaded, ideal for hot weather. The trail starts at the thermal baths of Bains-les-Bains. On the way out, you pass through the charming spa park of the resort. From this point on, follow the two-way marking with a green ring. By taking the avenue du Docteur Bailly, then the route de la gare you will gradually leave the town and you will find yourself in the nature. This route follows a charming stream. At the roundabout, take the path along the D164. It will be accessible on your right. Don't forget to take a moment to observe the surrounding nature with its diverse flora and fauna. Then your steps will lead you to the forest hill of Rédé. Finally the path will take you across the D164 and back in the opposite direction. You will retrace your steps via the rue de Bertramont and return to the town and the starting point.

The telecombi is a teleport with seats and cabins. The Télécombi du Mont Rond, coming from the Col de la Faucille, allows you to access the crests of the Haute Chaîne du Jura; it lifts you from 1323m to 1543m altitude. Once there, the hiker is only 30mn walk away to reach the Grand Mont Rond (1596m), and 2h for the Colomby de Gex (1689m). 2 blue pistes for all mountain biking are marked from the top of the télécombi. In winter, it allows snowshoe enthusiasts to reach the summits with ease and to enjoy the ridges. Please respect the regulations set up by the Natural Reserve of the Jura Range.

DEPARTING FROM LAUSANNE, HEAD TO THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF GRUYÈRES, HOME TO THE FAMOUS SWISS CHEESE! Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. Built in 1771 based on the design of the knight d’Arçon, to replace the entrance across the ramparts, the Saint-Pierre entrance is now one of the symbols of Pontarlier. Remodelled during the 12th century, it has kept its classical style and is listed on the Supplementary Inventory of Historical Monuments. Adorned with lines reminiscent of the Arc de Triomphe, the entrance appears like a crown atop the rue de la République and marks a symbolic transition from the more contemporary districts and the historic centre. During the early 20th century, the theatre was built as a reception hall above the Pontarlier market-hall. These market-halls are reminiscent of the large fairs that have been held in the city since the 13th century. During the 14th century, these fairs experienced a boom when the Col de Jougne (15 km south) became a commercial crossing point between the North Sea and the Mediterranean. The association « Les amis du Vieux Fontenoy » organise a party to celebrate these 40 years. Around one of the oldest Dungeon of Lorraine many activities will be proposed. On the programme : conferences of the Middle Age, visit of the castle ruin, demonstration of arts and crafts, open air cinema, … You will find food service on the spot.

The congregation of Les Annonciades Célestes de Pontarlier was established in 1609 by six young women from Pontarlier. The monastery’s baroque-style door, created by the sculptor Joseph Guyon, can still be admired. Its portal, which has been classed a historical monument, was completed in 1715 based on the plans set out by Nicolas Callier, an architect and entrepreneur from Besançon, and was later modified during the 19th century. Built during a prosperous period, this church is in the flamboyant Gothic style of the 15th century. Built by the Burgundian Sires on the remains of a Romanesque building, of which some traces remain (pools), it has a beautiful overall harmony. The unique choir has an altar made of a massive buhr mill, cut from local sandstone. On top of it are anthropomorphic keystones with the effigy of the Lords of Neuchâtel. The sculpted stone pulpit, the baptismal font and the south portal are fine examples of Renaissance architecture. Guided tour every third Monday from March to October, Information and reservations at the Tourist Information Office of La Vôge-Les-Bains, and free visit all year round.

The Lombard Tower is the last trace of the fortifications erected in the 14th century when the town was connected to the House of Burgundy. Also known as the “Tour du Poids”, it was used for administrative purposes during the economic boom of the town during the Renaissance. To discover: 2 traditional vaulted artillery rooms with three gun ports and a beautiful Guard Room on the 3rd level. Tours every third Monday from mid-March to mid-November with the Tourist Information Office of Bains-Les-Bains. Occasional tours by the “Amis du Vieux Fontenoy” association in summer and during the Heritage Days in September.

At the heart of the historic centre is the vast expanse offered by the Place d’Arçon where the town hall and the Pontarlier museum are both located. The first was completed in 1838 and originally housed an indoor market on the ground floor. The museum is located in one of the city’s oldest buildings, a combination of three houses, the oldest of which dates back to the 15th century. (PNRHJ - Un tour en ville, “A tour of the town”)

These barracks, which were built with some of the money allocated by Louis XV to reconstruct Pontarlier after the fire in 1736, could house up to 200 men and just as many horses. The two L-shaped buildings were linked by a huge door, however, the municipality refused to close the square on the other side. This place was therefore split between a place of armament and a public place. In 1922, the door was removed, to allow for better circulation. (PNRHJ - Un tour en ville, “A tour of the town”)

A former coach house, to which it owes its name, the La Poste brewery received the 20th Century Heritage label for its Art-Deco style. It is also famous for having been the place where “Septième Juré” starring Bernard Blier and “Les Granges Brûlées” starring Simone Signoret and Alain Delon were both filmed.
