Thanks to "Gone with the Wind" author Margaret Mitchell, the International Pilot Club provided Vimoutiers with funding to help rebuild the town following the bombings that took place during the Battle of Normandy. The workers of an Ohio cheese dairy pooled their money to commission a statue of Marie Harel. They offered the statue as a gift to the town of Vimoutiers, apologising for the destruction caused by the bombings. The original Marie Harel statue had been decapitated during American bombardments in 1944.

In the capital of the Pays d'Auge, heavily affected by the bombings of the second World War, do not miss the visit of the church Notre-Dame for two main reasons: - its stained glass windows, they were pulverized during a bombing in June 14, 1944 and restored with Gabriel Loire modern techniques, Glass Master in Chartres. The stained glass windows tell the story of Normandy and of the Pays d'Auge: the Vikings, the monks of Jumieges, Joan of Arc, Camembert, etc.. - its organ is listed MH, it is the last organ created by Aristide Cavaille-Coll (the twin of this organ is in Moscow). This is the largest organ of the department of Orne (3 manuals, 1800 pipes).

When Vimoutiers was destroyed by American bomber pilots, this cauldron was used to cook soup for refugees until 15 September 1944. Free access all year round.

This interactive and collective museum, which pays tribute to both the great classics of theatre and recent developments on the stage, offers immersive activities such as historical reconstructions of theatre scenes and fashion shows, providing a lively and entertaining experience. Vimoutiers, Sunday the 20th August 1944: the Battle of Normandy is drawing to a close. The Chambois-Falaise Pocket, where the German troops are surrounded, is about to be closed down by the Allies. On the 29th August 1944 a few German tanks find themselves with no alternative but to make a detour along the main road from Vimoutiers to Gacé. One of them, a type E Tiger, comes to a full stop on the way out of Vimoutiers, having run out of fuel. Its crew sabotage it with two explosive charges. Classed as an Historic Monument in 1975. One of only six such tanks.
