The term "bildstock" translates as "image" (bild) and "stick" (stock), meaning a shaft that carries an image. Similar to a calvary, the bildstock is a religious monument made of wood or stone erected either in the streets or in the villages. It is usually crowned by a niche in which there is an image of Christ on the cross or of another saint, all protected by a canopy. All bildstocks are different in form, meaning and structure. Sometimes they rest on an altar, sometimes they show elements of everyday life. Why do we see many bildstocks in our villages? In the 17th century, the Thirty Years' War took a heavy toll on these religious monuments except around Thionville. Indeed, the Thionville region, which never belonged to the Dukes of Lorraine but remained in Luxembourg until the middle of the 17th century when the war was only temporary, has preserved a large number of bildstocks. 200 million years ago, during the Jurassic era, and more precisely during the Sinemurian period, Metzervisse and Distroff were under water. Today, we can easily see innumerable traces of the presence of this marine fauna. These are the fossils of the bowed gryphae. A bowfin was a mollusc that we could associate with an oyster. It could live at a depth of up to 50 metres. Follow the yellow line.

Hike along the Bibiche and discover the hidden treasures of the commune of Kuntzig, such as the Saint-Quirin church. Neo-Gothic style, it replaces the church built in 1775, which became too small to accommodate the population.

The Petelot is a local poacher who worked between Bertrange and Guénange. Writings about him remain laconic. This walking loop offers several curiosities: in the north of the forest, traces of the loading bay for the munitions of the Second World War which fed the Maginot Line further east still remain. Other even older traces appear in the forest where the ground, provided with mounds of several tens of metres in diameter, attest to the probable presence of tumuli. These heaps of stones or earth cover tombs dating from the Protohistory or even the Prehistory.

This "Moselle and Forest" loop stretches across the Lorraine plateau. This landscape link between the urban and industrial area of the Metz/Thionville axis to the west and the Canner valley to the east, marks the identity of the Arc Mosellan territory. Along the way, you will accompany the silent march of the barges sailing on the Moselle before enjoying the hushed atmosphere of the Blettange state forest.

Come and explore the landscapes of the Canner Valley by bike on a route of approximately 25 km, mostly along new cycling paths. Your adventure begins at the Moulin de Buding, a historic museum on the banks of the Canner. This mill has stood the test of time, producing oil and flour before turning to textile weaving. Continue your journey to Fort Hackenberg, one of the largest forts of the Maginot Line and a key witness to World War II. Pedal through the Forêt des 4 Seigneurs, a haven of tranquility with its majestic trees. Your journey will conclude with a pleasant, rolling countryside road between Lémestroff and Inglange, passing through Budling. A route rich in history and nature, to be enjoyed at your own pace!

From Buding or Budling, the route mainly leads through the forest to the Hackenberg Chapel, which offers visitors a magnificent panoramic view.

This tour is a great opportunity to go from one valley to another, those of the Canner and Bibiche. Streams of the same name flow through them and give rhythm to the valley bottoms which were shaped 30,000 years ago during the gradual retreat of a glacier. As proof, the digging of the pond at the Moulin de Buding revealed peat: a material that constitutes a real glacial relic. Follow the yellow line markers.

The Canner route follows the river of the same name from Kédange-sur-Canner to Kœnigsmacker. You can safely discover a green valley that leads to the Voie Bleue and the banks of the Moselle.

The GR5F, a hiking route from Bussang to Koblenz, provides a direct link from Apach to Metz via the verdant Canner valley. This first stage takes you to Kédange-sur-Canner.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

This limestone calvary, erected in 1721 for Jean Cheider and Marie-Lise Boulangé, his wife, is the work of the sculptor Duchêne. It belongs to the commune of Volstroff. This calvary is composed of a straight shaft and Latin crosses. The sculpted decorations are classical: Christ on the cross, the Virgin Mary, St John, various Christian symbols and instruments of the Passion. More original: stonecutters' tools are represented.

The limestone Calvary of Metzervisse was built in the 18th century. The representations on the carved decorations: Christ on the cross, St. John the Baptist and St. Catherine. Please note that this calvary is privately owned.

A characteristic smell of chalk and wax, an inkwell in which to dip your pen to write, large blackboards: welcome to the beginning of the last century, in the Metzervisse schoolroom. After an introduction to the subject, the volunteer teacher will show the little pupils how school worked in days gone by, and then welcome them into the "classroom" to practise writing with a pen and measure themselves against the teacher's authority, plus many other surprises. Limestone Calvary erected in the first half of the 19th century, consisting of a straight base, a columnar shaft of circular section and a Latin cross. The sculpted decorations depict Christ on the cross, a Christian symbol, winged cherubs, and agricultural tools. Property of the commune of Volstroff.

The church in Distroff is built on a Latin cross plan with three vessels. It has a polygonal chevet, a long-sided roof, lean-to buildings, and groin and barrel vaults. Built in 1910, it replaces the castle's castral chapel which had become too narrow. Visit of the exterior only.

The Saint Hubert Calvary was erected in 1617 in the Rue du Château d'Eau. Made entirely of limestone, it is 392 metres high, 120 metres wide and 127 metres deep. Today, the Calvary of Saint Hubert belongs to the Commune of Distroff. The symbols alternate between winged angels' heads and farmers' tools (coulter, ploughshare) on a plant and floral decoration. The Parc de la Canner is the setting for the Buding oil mill and is full of opportunities for walking and cycling, and lends itself easily to nature discovery activities. Frogs of all kinds, toads, herons, spotted woodpeckers, finches, blackbirds... have taken up residence here. In fine weather, the delicate dragonflies also take advantage of this preserved environment to perform superb aerial ballets. In autumn, the site is decked out in superb colours and allows the observation of certain birds leaving for warmer climes. In winter, when it snows, it becomes a wonderful playground for those wishing to search for the tracks left by small animals.

Come and discover one of Eastern France's last oil mills and find out how operates while admiring its powerful millwheel. You can also enjoy the extensive collection of old farming machine tools and the educational gardens surrounding the mill. Guided tours are available for groups as well as themed workshops upon request. The gift shop offers souvenirs and local products. The whole site is wheelchair accessible. It offers large parking areas and a 180-seat restaurant.

Limestone cross erected in the first quarter of the 18th century, probably sculpted by a pupil of François Lapierre, from Rombas. The calvary consists of a straight base, a columnar shaft in a circular section and a Latin cross. The sculpted decorations include Christ on the cross, Saint John, Saint Lawrence, Saint Remi, a mystical pelican and winged cherubs.

Built in the 13th century, Luttange Castle originally consisted of two residential buildings built in the courtyard and linked to the central point by a defence tower. In each century, transformations were made. There is still a round tower dating from the 13th century and a square tower from the 14th century. In the 15th century, an oval door was built in front of the square tower, a unique construction in Lorraine. Emperor Charles V bought the castle of Luttange to give it to his valet and court painter, Jean Monet. Later, the buildings were owned by the d'Attel and de Cabanes families who attached great importance to the interior decoration (superb fireplaces). In the 19th century, the descendants of these families donated the buildings to the commune. The facades and roofs of the postern as well as the interior gallery and the access staircase were listed as Historic Monuments by decree on 2 November 1979.
