Inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List on December 2001, Provins is today a wonderfully preserved medieval town. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Provins is at the height of its fame thanks to the famous Trade Fairs of Champagne. The urban structure is organised to accommodate the great number of wholesalers: the wide streets for the transfer of goods and for the stalls, the three level merchant’s houses with sumptuous vaulted low rooms... The presence of water (Durteint and Voulzie rivers) favours also the economic activities and the expansion of many trades such as the woollen cloth manufacturer, the parchment maker, butcher, etc... The impressive fortified wall was built during the 13th century and extended for 5 km (today 1,2 km), and it offers a catalogue of military architecture. Those ramparts protected the inhabitants and the tradespeople, and showed off the power of the Earls of Champagne. Musée du cristal de Bayel et son atelier du verre

The Bayel Crystal Museum discover the history of glass and crystal from antiquity to the present day. Designed as an Eco-Museum, the inhabitants of Bayel gave it their soul. Models made by the Cristallerie glassmakers reveal that the tools and techniques have remained identic to those of Diderot and Alambert’s Encyclopedia, with exceptional creations and ancient documents to discover the history of this amazing “City of Crystal”. An 8 minute video in the Crystal‘s workshop illustrates all stages of the manufacture; hand blowing, trimming, engraving, satin, gilding, enameling…. The Museum also has a library on the crystal and all that surrounds it (only available on site). In 2019 we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our museum, and to honour this occasion we invite you to our exhibition entitled: “Baylois life, as it was before…” Several themes are discussed, such as the social life, various associations … while keeping the manufacture as the central core of the life of the Baylois. This new ethonological part, dedicated to the Bayel inhabitants, is now completed by a documentary entitled “A Crystal Factory in Champagne” and directed by Michèle Paintault (producer; Ofrateme 1976 – Canopé Network). This film will show you the different workshops of the Bayel Cristallerie in 1975. Lovely memories in the period when the manufacture was in full swing. To safeguard our heritage, the Bayellois know-how, the Crystal Museum has set up glass blowing demonstrations, in addition to visiting the rooms and videos. Go to page “City of crystal" and "Demonstrations of Glass Blowing”.

Eglise Saint-Martin

Formerly parish of the diocese of Langres, the church of Éguilly-sous-Bois depended on the deanery of Bar-sur-Seine at the only collation of bishop. This building of the late twelfth and early thirteenth century, single nave of 4.70 m wide, is enlarged to the south by a large chapel of two bays, vaulted warheads. The Romanesque nave, abutted by large buttresses, ends with a flat chevet from the beginning of the Gothic period, pierced by a triplet, whose semicircular windows, strongly splayed, are garnished with modern stained glass windows. Two large buttresses shoulder the angles of the chevet and the chapel as an appetizer. In 1843, the west span was surmounted by a square bell tower open on all four sides. A very simple semicircular Romanesque door remains at the foot of the belfry; it is surmounted by an oculus. On the reverse side of the facade, above the door, there is a semicircular arch with a double arch that falls on two columns with capitals of slender foliage. The modern wooden vault of the nave replaced in the 19th century. the stone vaults in bad condition. It falls on cul-de-lamp shaped triangular buckets that belong to the mode of primitive vaulting and found in several buildings in the region, as Isle-Aumont or Bucey-en-Othe for example. The last bay of the nave and the entrance to the choir have received a particularly careful treatment; they are chanted by columns with foliage capitals, on which the original vaults rested. The side chapel opens wide on the nave by two broken arches without molding corresponding to each bay. This chapel, lower than the nave, is vaulted with robust ogives with broad flattened intrados framed by a jump, frequent in the region and whose rustic keys are carved, one of a mask, the other of a kind of widely open flower. They rest on consoles placed very low on the walls, which gives a squat appearance to this part of the building. The ogives of the choir rest on cul-de-lampe shaped cups, very close to those of the nave. On the side walls, consoles support two polychrome equestrian statues, one of St. Martin, the other of St. George slaying the dragon. A statue of the Trinity, in stone, is classified as movable objects. In 1998, the Safeguarding of French Art gave a grant of 50 000 F to the commune for the restoration of the stone vault of the southern chapel and the repair of its coatings.

Du Côté des Renoir

In Paris, Pierre-Auguste Renoir meets a young provincial native of Essoyes, Aline Victorine Charigot. Attracted by the beauty and generous forms of the young 18 year old girl, the artist asks her to pose for him. She becomes his model, and later his wife, but above all the mother of his three sons, Pierre the actor, Jean the filmmaker and Claude the ceramist. In 1885, she brings her husband to Essoyes. Conquered and charmed by the landscape and way of life of the villagers, Renoir and his family come back every summer for 30 years. The family home, purchased in 1896, welcomes not only Renoir, but many of his friends. The painter finds in Champagne the inspiration and the models of his canvasses through the laundresses of the village, his children and Gabrielle Renard, who becomes the nanny of Jean, but also his favourite model. Discover Essoyes, the village of the Renoirs. * The Renoir Area : -A permanent exhibition to discover Renoir : the “Espace Renoir” presents a permanent exhibition organized in theme boxes to discover the life of the famous painter. -An audiovisual show: a short film in French or English to discover Essoyes, dedicated to the creations of the Renoirs -A temporary showroom -A shop, a relaxation area. * Renoir’s Garden : Between the reception area and the Atelier, walk up the driveway of the garden, inspired by Renoir’s paintings, between fruit trees, green plants and fragrant flowers. Take time to stroll, sit in the shade of the apple tree, why not imitate Renoir and take time to sketch. At the end of the garden discover the house of the painter. * Renoir’s House : This house belonged to the descendants of Pierre-Auguste Renoir until 2012, date from which thanks to the municipality of Essoyes and the Heritage Foundation, it has undergone a major renovation in order to preserve its authenticity and soul of this family home. Born in 1841, it was in 1896 that the painter bought his first property. And it is Essoyes, village of his wife Aline Charigot, that Renoir chooses. Here he found the calm and serenity that brought him the joy of family reunions mainly in the summer and many themes encouraging his work; the market, the landscape, church, models … * The Painter’s Workshop Built in 1906, not to disturb the children in their games, Renoir painted many paintings here. The ground floor invites you to discover the different facets of this artist: his appeal for colours, his desire for sculptures, his attraction for portraits… In the centre of the room, as in levitation, the painter’s wheelchair, symbol of the courage and devotion of the man who preferred to give up walking rather than painting. Next door, projected on a canvas, some paintings made in Essoyes. On the first floor, discover some authentic objects. The sculptures, of course, but also the transport box that was used to repatriate the paintings made here to Paris. A rare document film allows you to observe the painter at work.
