Welcome to the village of Sommethonne! The village of Sommethonne is believed to have taken its name from the Latin "Summa-Thonnis" meaning "The top of the source of the Thonne". The Thonne is the river whose source is not far from the village and flows into the Chiers in Thonne-Les-Prés in France. This ride takes in some beautiful countryside in the Gaume region and leads at the summit of a gentle slope to the site of Montquintin, a veritable eagle’s nest overlooking the valley of the River Ton. Welcome to the municipality of Rouvroy where we invite you to stroll along the RAVeL route linking the villages of Rouvroy, Harnoncourt and Lamorteau. Here there is no crazy scramble to the tourist attractions and no schedules to keep to. Enjoy the tranquillity and discover all the wonders around you in your own time. For your comfort and better accessibility, there are 12 benches along the way, adapted for those with reduced mobility. Take a break every 150 metres, discover a unique part of the local heritage and share nice moments with the few passers-by that you may meet along your way. Start from the ROX in Rouvroy with an information board as you enter the RAVeL.

Come and explore the citadel in Montmédy. See the museum (musée de la fortification), the Jules Bastien-Lepage museum and the parapet walkway, a signposted walk some 1 km long providing a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside. Find out about the citadel's history through information panels, videos and quizzes. Children can find out more about fortifications through a booklet and game. In July and August, torchlight visits give a different view of the citadel! Musée de la fortification: The aim of the museum is to highlight the richness, diversity and fascinating features of military architecture in Meuse, from the area's earliest days to the late 18th century. There are models of systems of defence, old weaponry, aerial views of fortified sites in Meuse etc. The Musée Jules Bastien-Lepage turns the spotlight on the work of the Realist portrait artist born in Damvillers, not far from Montmédy, in the 19th century. Come and see the chronological frieze of the artist's life, a few of his early drawings and a series of paintings (portraits or scenes of country life). An interactive terminal rounds off the visit and shows where you can see most of the artist's works.

Montmédy is a city within a city. At the heart of the fortified town, narrow streets twist and turn around small squares. Artists’ workshops are scattered all around. Above all, Montmédy was a formidable citadel, one of the most imposing in northern France. Charles V built it in 1525 to ward off attacks … by the French. At the time, the region was under the rule of the Austrian Netherlands. The troops of Louis XIV laid siege to Montmédy and seized this strategic site. Having become … French, Vauban gave it its final form. A circuit marked by arrows, with an audio guide, leads you into the bowels of the fortification. As for the fortifications museum, it reveals how defensive systems have developed. This is an area in which men have always shown imagination …

In around 565, Deacon Walfroy set up home on the top of the hill that now bears his name. His aim was to convert the pagan population of Trier, who worshipped the goddess Arduinna, to Christianity. Saint-Walfroy thus became a place of pilgrimage and a church was built on the site. The church was destroyed completely in 1944 but was rebuilt in 1957, on the foundations of the original building from the 6th Century. Its stained glass windows are the work of Pierre Gaudin, a mosaic artist and master glazier from a long line of master craftsmen.

Avioth has been a place of pilgrimage for many hundreds of years (since the early 12th century) and it was this that led to the building of the vast Church of Our Lady of Avioth. It is a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic architecture, dating from the second half of the 13th century, and is often described as "lacework in stone". It is famous for its "Recevresse", a small building in front of the church that is unique. The "Cathedral in the Fields" has been a listed historic monument since 1840 and a basilica church since 1993.

The Sylvia Arduina may be untamed and inhospitable, but it nevertheless remained inhabited. This vast territory needed to be evangelised – so said the Frankish Kings! The hermits were the first scouts. One of them, Walfroy, settled in Margut. He was not alone… A few kilometres away, in the middle of the forest, monks founded Orval Abbey…

This 17th-century Renaissance château was built for Simon II de Pouilly, Military Governor of Stenay, in his capacity as representative of the Duchy of Lorraine. The most interesting of its architectural features are its imaginatively-carved doorways and porches and its impressive dovecote. Visitors are taken round by the castle's caretaker, who shows them the two courtyards, the dovecote, the park and the chapel.

10 May 1940. The Germans pushed rapidly through the Belgian Ardennes and went round the famous Maginot Line. It didn’t suffered at all, except in Villy where the German army bombarded the fortified structure with over 250 cannons. The shock was terrible, but the garrison stood its ground for three days. Eventually, the Germans overcame the resistance by placing charges beneath the domes. Inside, it was hell: 104 soldiers were asphyxiated. Visits – individuals and groups/bookings.

L’Alcazar is located within the Montmédy citadel, a stone's throw from the tourist office. The interior is bright and modern. You can also dine outside if you prefer, with a view of Place de la Fontaine. Every day, the restaurant serves food made on the premises and the menu changes every month. At the weekend, the staff at L’Alcazar turns the spotlight on a particular dish in addition to its menu.

Located opposite the basilica church, this warm friendly restaurant serves elegant, creative cuisine. The menu makes extensive use of seasonal, and especially local, produce and is changed every month.

Le Pigeonnier is a walkers' gîte located beside the first drawbridge in the citadel. It is open throughout the year. From the rooms, there is a fabulous view of the fortress in Montmédy. The gîte has a shared well-equipped kitchen, two showers, two toilets, four washbasins, a dining room and five bedrooms. Booking required.

The campsite is located in lush surroundings below the citadel so, as soon as you wake up, you'll have a splendid view of the ramparts. Choose the pitch that you prefer – in the shade or in the sun. Whether you have a tent, caravan or motorhome, you’ll find a pitch to suit. The toilet and wash block are cleaned daily. There is also a kids’ playground.
