The 1870 battlefields are found on the "back" of the plateau, which opens up to the west towards the Côtes de Meuse hills. Along the paths you will come across many monuments erected in memory of the soldiers and a variety of educational and fun activities.

Nestling at the bottom of the Gorzia valley, Gorze is a natural attraction for walkers. The many wooded paths climb quickly to the heights, where breathtaking panoramas open up towards the Moselle valley and the surrounding hills.

The GR5 hiking route links the North Sea to the Mediterranean. It enters France in Mondorff. This second stage takes hikers from the Côtes de Moselle hills to the Pays des Etangs lakes of Dieuze.

The village of Arry, perched on the heights of the Côtes de Moselle hills, offers breathtaking views over the Moselle valley and the Lorraine plateau. This special site favours the development of plant and animal life characteristic of chalk grassland.

On the right bank of the Moselle valley, Jouy-aux-Arches and Corny-sur-Moselle occupy a favoured location. Jouy-aux-Arches is known for its impressive aqueduct, built by the Gallo-Romans to carry drinking water from the springs of Gorze to Metz, a distance of 22 km.

On the left bank of the Moselle, Ancy-sur-Moselle and Novéant-sur-Moselle are excellent starting points for hikes. The village of Dornot, perched on the heights, is characteristic of the wine-making villages on these slopes, with its narrow, twisting streets offering beautiful views over the Moselle valley.

Some twenty enthusiasts work on the 60 hectares of a terroir that has been brought up to date over the last few decades and is divided into three bastions, around Metz, Sierck-les-Bains and Vic-sur-Seille. The vines are located on the sunny slopes of the main valleys, protected from the cold and the wind, and produce AOC Moselle wines, mainly white, but also reds and rosés. The Moselle Wine Route around Metz is accessible by motorway A31, exit 29, follow Fey. To discover the winegrowers of the Saulnois, go directly to Vic-sur-Seille.

This walk takes you back in time along the ancient Roman road "Via Aggripa", which linked Toul and Metz. The village streets are lined with the 13th-century church of Saint-Maurice, a listed building. The town hall is housed in a Renaissance-style house dating from the 16th century, which is also listed.

Between the 14th and 16th centuries, a climate of insecurity reigned on the banks of the Moselle and the Seille due to the many conflicts between the Republic of Metz and the Duchies of Lorraine and Bar, each of which tried to claim this rich land for its own. At the centre of old winegrowing villages clinging to the hillsides, fortified churches that were used as defensive structures bear witness to the insecurity of bygone days. The church in Sillegny is an example of this: Erected in the 15th century, it contains some remarkable frescoes, perfectly preserved. This circuit at the gates of Metz, between the slopes of the Moselle and the valley of the Seille, is a skilful blend of history, the local area and modernity.

This tour, starting in Sillegny, is an invitation to explore the surroundings of this charming village on the banks of the Seille, famous for its church known as the "Sixtine of the Seille". A veritable treasure trove, its tempera murals date from the 15th and 16th centuries. Long hidden by whitewash, they were discovered on 8 May 1845 by Abbé Schnabel, parish priest from 1840 to 1891, and restored by the painter Charles-André Malardot.

Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

The Natura 2000 site of Rupt-de-Mad valley extends from Jaulny to Arnaville. This valley is home to a wide variety of natural environments that offers a choice of habitat for wildlife. It houses including cacareous grasslands of Arnaville and Waville.

Important medieval place of the 11th and 12th centuries (Historical Monuments) dominating the valley of Rupt-de-Mad. You can still admire the 13th-century castle keep, the ramparts and the 15th-century loopholes. Outer walls with square towers. Private collection: 15th-century weapons, pieces of earthenware, First Empire weapons, Lorraine furniture... For some historians, it was Joan of Arc's last residence. The castle of Jaulny is only open on appointment for school visits.

Located at the western outskirts of Thiaucourt, the graveyard comprises 4153 graves of Americans dead in the war, most of them died during the Great Offensive (1916) which engendered the devastation of the Saint-Mihiel Salient. 283 names of casualties are mentioned on the museum walls.

Nested in a Vallon in Vilcey-sur-Trey, the Abbey Sainte-Marie-au-Bois was built in the beginning of the 12th century by St Norbert. Listed as Historical Monument since 1929, it was in the heart of the combats zone during World War One and got luckily saved. The abbey offers an historical and architectural testimony of the evolutions from the 12th to the 16th century. One hour and a half guided tour (only for groups) which includes the cells from outside, "Florentine" fronts and the remains of the abbey-church chapel. *Open on Sundays (2-6pm) from June to September or on request. ~ Groups (between 10 and 25) Guided tours from June to September: on Sundays (2-7pm) weekdays on appointment - Length: 1h30.

Originally, Saint-Rémi, secular foundation, was a State private chapel. But the main family from Onville, heir to the founder of the field, had to settle after Mil Year, to ensure the function of local attorney in favor of Gorze. Walter Knight of Onville in 1227 establishes a will completely in favor of gorzienne Abbey and Saint-Rémi parish. The original modest chapel was probably enlarged a first time in the ninth century. The aster was already looking like it still remains, at least for the inhabited part. The eastern part of the aster was only made up of winemakers houses whose cellars in the basement are now very often uninhabited. The aster would have been in work during the eighteenth century, which would have resulted in the need to temporarily remove the houses at the rear. Built at the expense of the community, rectangular and imposing bell tower is a fine example of what could be a fortified tower in the Middle Ages.

Medieval Fortress mentioned for the first time in the year 900 under Emperor Othon. It was the last and the most important defence for the dukes of Lorraine against the Bishops of Metz. The first dukes liked the fortress strategic building that never had been taken away. Before establishing the capital in Nancy, the dukes gladly live in Prény. Preny was the war cry of Lorrain soldiers. A part of the ruins is self-guided, the other part is conducted by a guide. Temporary exhibitions take place in gardens. The village, dominated by the castle, is spread over three floors. The vineyards once stood on the slopes with terraced facing south, giving it the appearance of a village in Provence. Therefore, Prény can not be placed in the category of traditional street-Lorraine villages since they are in the form of two rows of houses situated one facing the other to the street in the center and between usoirs the houses and the road or path where a large street appearance. In the old village of Prény, the streets are narrow and nonexistent usoirs. This village is an ancient medieval city. At the top, a castle served as residence of the dukes of Lorraine in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. In 1139, William said COOL, confessed Prény 1138 to 1168, gave the Abbey of Sainte-Marie-aux-Bois founded for ten years and the ban pastures of Tautecourt and the right to use the Prény ban and its pastures. In 1207, the castle was captured and partly destroyed by the count of Bar, which since its castle of Monsoon, constantly challenges the Duke of Lorraine. The thirteenth century to the first half of the fifteenth century's lives are disrupted regularly by the conflicts between the House of Lorraine to the House Bar or to the bishops and to the Republic of Metz. In the fifteenth century, the rising power of the House of Burgundy becomes threatening to the independence lorraine. Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, invading Lorraine, goes with his army near Prény but refrains well to attack the castle, which after its reconstruction in the years following the 1207 disaster has become a true masterpiece of medieval military architecture, impregnable by force.

Issues related to the presence of one of the finest vineyards in the sector caused envy to the Carolingian period. It was decided at the Messina yard to give the villa in Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains. from private property, Bayoncourt became Bayonville when the ban was given to the clergy. Saint-Gorgon Gorze retained property in the communal territory, and the appointment of a High-Lorraine Duke at the end of the tenth century was reflected in the amputation of a "fine piece" of local vineyards in favor of the monks of Belgian abbey of Orval. And, once the duke confessed St. Peter in Nonnains, was built on land of this abbey fortress of Prény, part of the village depended directly. This property of complexity because of the aster St. Julien a special case of Val Mad. Classic Middle Ages, aster took the form of madin model, but with the originality to have at the end of the right wing, a stately house that local tradition called it the "castle with three towers ". The habitat was initially built around the vineyard and the aster. Around the church, if the side cemetery disappeared, homes and houses are still there on more than half of the "horseshoe". In 1826, the bell tower was still equipped with a hoarding, then removed for run down and replaced by the "floor of the belfry" covered slate. The most powerful buttresses that still owns the church attest that it has not had in the eighteenth century of major refurbishments. The current altar bears a remarkable tabernacle dating from the early years of the eighteenth century.
