Leave for 6 days and 150 km of horseback riding and discover the heritage of the Parc Naturel Régional Périgord Limousin. This 5th stage will lead you from Brantôme to Milhac de Nontron (La Glaudie). In Brantôme, the Venice of Perigord, visit the town and admire the 1200 year old abbey. Then head to Champagnac de Bélair where you will notice the Château de la Borie dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. You will be able to make the horses drink at the fountain under the Vaugoubert cave, then you will notice the Château de Vaugoubert listed as a historical monument since 1948. Located on the right bank of the Dronne, it "governs the valley".

Because of its insufficient flow in low water period, the Dronne is not a navigable river by the flat-bottomed boats which sailed on the Isle, the Vézère or the Dordogne. Its banks have been developed since the Middle Ages for the establishment of hydraulic flour mills, coupled with fisheries. Take a canoe trip down the river to discover some of the oldest and most beautiful mills in the valley (Moulin de Rochereuil, Moulin du Pont?)

Rectangular church made of three bays, two for the nave and one for the choir, rebuilt after the Hundred Years’ War. The church is surmounted with three extremely curved ribbed vaults. It dates from the 15th century and is dedicated to St. Peter and St. Sicarius (St. Sicaire in French), one of the Holy Innocents from Bethlehem murdered by King Herod (Matthew 2:16-18). A piece of the child’s relics is contained in an elegant reliquary inside the church. Located on one of the numerous secondary routes from Vézelay to Santiago de Compostela, St. Sicarius was worshiped by many pilgrims. During the 19th century, the church was listed as a historical monument and restored by the architect Paul Abadie (1812-1884).

The Abbey church bell tower of Brantôme dates from the 11th century. It is one of the oldest campanile type bell towers in France. It has the peculiarity of being an independent tower standing on a 12m-high natural outcropping against which the Abbey church is built. The architecture is typical of the Romanesque style which flourished in the Limousin region and is characterised by the use of gables which crown the round-arched openings and by the superposition of four recessed floors. Its summit is crowned by a stone quadrangular pyramid. Guided tours from April to October.

Located on the 1st floor of the abbey (with elevator), the library welcomes you into a 138 m² space, divided into three sections: youth, adult non-fiction and adult fiction.

The Notre-Dame church was built in the early 16th century by cardinal Amanieu d’Albret, commendatory abbot of Saint-Pierre (St. Peter) Abbey of Brantôme, in order that the villagers could have a parish church within the city. The single nave is covered with rib vaults. A bartizan belfry rises at the angle facing the bridge. The church was deconsecrated in the 19th century and was converted into a covered market and village hall. It now houses the PÉRIGORD Dronne Belle Tourist Office in Brantôme.

Ornamental garden designed in the 16th century by Pierre de Mareuil, commendatory abbot of Brantôme from 1538 to 1556. Three Renaissance style repositories with an Italian influence decorate its alleys. The writer and chronicler Pierre de Bourdeille, better known as Brantôme, commendatory abbot from 1556 until his death in 1614 and nephew of his predecessor, was very fond of this garden inherited from his uncle. His cousins called him “my cousin of the Bridge” or “Mister of the Orchard”. A right angle-shaped bridge built in the 16th century whose entrance is indicated by an elegant Renaissance style pavilion leads to the garden. Its original shape is due to the necessity of spanning the river Dronne and the canal which run around the city.
