First a natural border, then a "fortified valley" marking out the border between the Kingdom of France and the Duchy of Normandy, the river Epte, at stake in many battles over the centuries, boasted numerous fortresses in the Middle Ages. On the edge of the Seine valley, this village boasts exceptional natural sites such as its hillsides. Stroll in a village on the banks of the Seine, where some curiosities await you: its church, its 15th century mill of which only the batteries date from that time. This village located in a valley on the hillside has the particularity of having atypical dwellings called troglodytes. Its hillsides overhanging the Seine benefit from the passage of the GR 2 and are registered in the Natura 2000 program and classified as an Important Zone for the Conservation of Birds (ZICO). Some of them are owned by the French Alpine Club and are very famous for their natural climbing cliffs.

A special place, assembling a collection of objects associated with the famous French composer in the house where he was born: Claude Debussy's birthplace is located in the historic quarter of Saint-Germain-en-Laye. It was in this 17-century house in the town that Claude Debussy was born, on 22 August 1862, and spent his early childhood. His father ran a china shop on the ground floor. After the composer's death in 1918, it soon became the main gathering place of his many admirers. Once inside, you will discover a wonderful little inner courtyard, where a splendid wooden staircase will lead you up to the museum. The museum, officially recognised as a 'Maison des illustres' ('Houses of the Famous'), displays objects and photographs that help provide a better understanding of the composer's creative process. In fact, Debussy liked to surround himself with objects from different places and artistic movements, which influenced his music. For example, a Japanese lacquered panel, which came from his Parisian mansion, depicting two fish swimming under a willow, musically metamorphosed into 'Poissons d'or', a piano piece (1907). This little gem awaits you on the Ile des Impressionnistes in Chatou : visit the workshops of the Sequana association ! In addition to the visit of the worshop, short cruises aboard the electric-powered boat "Chloé" are possible in spring and summer. The Grand Trianon was designed in 1687 by Jules Hardouin-Mansart to allow King Louis XIV to escape the excessive luxury of the Court and to safeguard his love affairs there. The site indeed exudes a sense of intimacy and refinement. The palace is inspired by Italian architecture and invites you to poetry and leisurely strolls. It was built on the site of Louis XIV’s former Porcelain Trianon. A little fun fact: in the past, the Grand Trianon was surrounded by thousands of potted flowers, which were changed every day. Today, this tradition is still maintained with each season. The spectacle was truly unique: flowerbeds bursting with blooms of every color and a wide variety of fragrances filled the air. Later on, the Grand Trianon was frequented by Napoleon Bonaparte and by Presidents of the Republic. From 1962 to 1966, General de Gaulle entrusted André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs, with the restoration of the Grand Trianon.

The Petit Trianon was built between 1763 and 1768 by the architect Gabriel, requested by Madame de Pompadour, mistress then friend of king Louis XV. Madame de Pompadour, who wished to “relieve the king’s boredom” — though no longer his mistress, she remained his friend — was the instigator of this small château, built by architect Gabriel between 1763 and 1768. It was erected near the Botanical Garden and the new menagerie, as Louis XV had a keen interest in the sciences. To please the marquise, always at the forefront of fashion, the king’s architect broke away from the rococo aesthetic and adopted a cubic form with very pure lines, in keeping with the brand-new “Greek style” then in vogue. Its simplicity is only apparent, for each façade is different, designed in relation to the space it overlooks: the courtyard, the French Garden with its elegant pavilion, the Botanical Garden, and the Florist’s Garden. Inside, one finds the same modernity of style. Simpler than the rest of the estate, the decoration of the Petit Trianon lies not in lavish materials — gilding is almost absent — but in the refinement of its sculptures, in a château entirely dedicated to nature. Madame de Pompadour died in 1764 and never saw the château completed. Today, it is above all the memory of Marie-Antoinette that it evokes. Gaillon boasts many vestiges of a past that has survived the ages. Stroll through narrow streets and staircases at the foot of corbelled houses, leading to one of France's first Renaissance castles. The Château de Gaillon is considered to be the first Renaissance château in the Seine valley. Built between 1498 and 1510, it is the most remarkable example of the combination of Gothic and Italian Renaissance architecture. The chateau was made famous by the Cardinal Georges d'Amboise, a forerunner of the development of Italian Renaissance in France. It would be dismantled during the French Revolution. Extensive restoration works have been carried out for 40 years. Since 2011, the château has been opened to the public.

In a natural environment on the banks of the river Seine, make the most of the peace and quiet to watch birds, amphibians and insects. Along the bank of the river Seine, the fluvial terraces in Courcelles Bouafles are listed a Sensitive Natural area. These flat areas shaped by the river during the ice age have been largely remodelled by the quarry workers in the last century for the extraction of stones. Nowadays they hold a diversity of dry and wet habitats which are rich in biodiversity. You can walk around this natural area by following the "Sentier des Rossignols" (Nightingales' Path) to observe an exceptional array of fauna and flora. Education panels and tools will help you observe and recognize numerous bird species that gather in these two bodies of water. As dusk falls, you might hear the peculiar call of the Eurasian stone curlew. This funny bird looking surprised with long yellow legs is threatened by the urbanisation of the fluvial terraces where it builds its nest on unobstructed grounds to be able to spot intruders. The protection of these natural habitats contributes to its conservation.

In the heart of a meander of the river Seine, go and explore the fluvial terraces and the remarkable wildlife it holds. Created by the sediments deposited by the turbid water of the river millions of years ago, the fluvial terraces of the river Seine are flat areas with sandy and calcareous soil. Less known than their neighbouring hills, they are nevertheless also home to remarkable natural habitats ideal to attract numerous species. Want to know what lives there? Which plants to look at? Why and how to protect these habitats? Follow the "Sentier du Criquet" (Grasshopper Path) along 1.7 km (0.6 miles) and discover the fauna and flora of this Sensitive Natural Area! Look up and you will see the cliffs of the river Seine in the background that tower over these fluvial terraces. The white limestone outcrops, topped by the medieval fortress of Château-Gaillard, can be seen from afar.

Objects and documents of the time spread over 1,000 m² recount the history of the Second World War. This private museum displays a collection built by the owner over 40 years. During the visit, you will be able to see a V-1 flying bomb and a German Goliath tracked mine (a remote controlled demolition vehicle), French cannons, phones and radars, some 30 mannequins wearing uniforms and representing the seven main countries involved in this war, photographs, posters, newspapers, etc. Among the pieces displayed in this museum, you will be able to have a look at rare objects: a tankette, an unusual "Goliath" vehicle, and the most famous of Hitler's secret weapons, a restored V-1 flying bomb.
