The south of Albret is the heart of the A.O.C. Armagnac-Ténarèze. Crossing the vineyards, you will smell the powerful perfumes of this brandy produced in old and traditional copper stills.

The commune of Lannes, in the heart of the Albret country, is composed of hilly landscapes, bordered by the Landes forest, and by the Auzoue and Osse rivers. In 1287, the castrum is held by Bertrand de Grauhet. It is more particularly a castelnau. The town was then a border post with a garrison of 20 soldiers. It has a fortified church to the east, a castle to the west, and ramparts complete this defensive set. From the 16th century to the Revolution, the lordship of Villeneuve is the property of the family of Noillan. It depends on the royal justice of Mézin. The economy of Lannes is essentially based on agriculture and the production of wine, Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne, local aperitifs.

The rivers of Albret draw asymmetrical valleys. The left bank with gentle slopes is often wooded. The right bank is steeper and gives way to a very fertile narrow plateau.

On the first part of this tour, you will accompany the pilgrims on their way to Compostela. At the heart of this loop, you can reach the church of Trignan (12th and 13th centuries), which was an ancient stopover for pilgrims.

From the landscaped gardens, which present the 11 villages of the territory, this small circuit will take you to the hill of Gagnet equipped with an orientation table, then through the medieval streets of the village and to the cork and stopper museum.

To the west, beyond the Gélise, begins the Landes forest, once planted with cork oaks, today with well-ordered pines To the east, on the slopes of Gascony, the vineyards of Armagnac Ténarèze ripen. Centuries-old trees and chapels, villages of character and castles can be discovered along the small roads, between woods and clearings.

Mézin is a stage of the GR®6543, the way of St-Jacques-de-Compostelle, via Vézelay. A stone statue of a pilgrim with his attributes is visible in the church. Below the church, in the Rue Cauzimis, a museum tells the saga of a family of cork makers from 1906 to the present day, in the company of Jules and his grandfather. After 4 km on the old railway line linking Agen to Mont-de-Marsan, your eyes will be drawn to the site of Poudenas. From the Romanesque bridge and the old post office, you will climb towards the church and the castle which was the former residence of the lords of Poudenas. Built in the 13th century, it was modified in the 17th century, evoking southern architecture. Sandy tracks cross the forest to the church of Cieuse. At the top of the Lasalle hill, a 180° panorama. The last ascent, gradually spreads out from the bridge over the Gélise to the medieval town.

To capture the spirit of this small country reminiscent of Italy, this itinerary offers low-angle views of Poudenas from the Gélise, and panoramic images as you pass over the hillsides. The village is located on the northern slope of the Gélise valley, on the border between Armagnac and the Gascony forest. Over the centuries, it was built around its castle, built in the 13th century, to control the valley, then it developed on the slope down to the river. Butcheries were established in the 19th century and continued until the 20th century. The economy of Poudenas is based primarily on its pine forests and vineyards of Armagnac. The wheat mill of Poudenas also visible on this circuit was built in the 16th century on the banks of the Gélise.

Legend has it that goats used to graze on this saltpetre-covered hill. Other hills with remarkable views, dotted with churches, castles and large farms are worth discovering.

After a train journey from Nérac to Mézin, we suggest that you return via the hiking trails that run along the edge of the Landes forest. You will walk through portions of different loops and may cross paths with pilgrims on their way to Compostela between Mézin and Cauderoue.

To the south-west of Agen, Villeneuve-de-Mézin is a small village in the commune of Lannes, about 20 km south of Nérac. In the heart of the gentle rolling countryside of the Albret and Gascony region, this hamlet deserves your attention for its Saint-Jean-Baptiste church, a fortified church dating from the end of the 12th century. Nested in the defensive complex of Villeneuve-de-Mézin, the church is built from a primitive 11th century tower. It presents, with its crenellations and the vestiges of a high defensive room, a very military architecture. Inside, the nave is rather short, the choir is flat chevet, almost square and barrel vaulted. It is surmounted by the floors of the primitive tower and finished by a walled bell tower. You can see frescoes from the 16th and 17th centuries, recently restored.

Antoine and Robert de Langalerie's farm grows cereals, vines and plum trees. It produces Armagnac and Floc de Gascogne, prunes from Agen, plain or with Armagnac. The castle is an old monastery of the XIIth century. The ageing cellar is located in the old chapel adjoining an inner courtyard that used to be the cloister.

Come and observe Mézin from the village's orientation table located in the Mézinais vineyard.

In the heart of Gascony in Lot-et-Garonne, discover Jean-René Wenk's organic farming operation, with products sold directly from the estate via a drive open 7/7. The estate's fruit juices are home-made and ORGANIC, as are the cereals and fruit: strawberries, cherries, apricots, plums, apples, green and yellow kiwis. New in 2024: organic sunflower oil.

For three generations, the Tadieu family welcomes you to Mézin. The farm raises ducks, cultivates vines and plum trees. From the medieval city to the cork city, alleys, vestiges of ramparts or the Museum of Cork and Cork testify to the rich past of Mézin. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1840, the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste dominates the hill where the town of Mézin is located. Monumental vestige of a Benedictine (Cluniac) monastery built around 1100, its architecture was very much influenced by the abbey of Saint-Sever in the Landes, notably for its Romanesque capitals. The plan of the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste is in the shape of a Latin cross. The Romanesque choir with a vaulted ceiling in the cul de four, restored in the 19th century, dates from the 11th century. The 13th and 14th century nave is gothic with a ribbed vault. The apses are contemporary with the choir. The bell tower was rebuilt in the 19th century following a fire. The stained glass windows date from the 19th century. A statue of Saint-Jacques recalls its position on the road to Compostela.

The municipal library of Mézin has about 11,000 books, magazines, CDs and DVDs available for free access. The establishment is divided into several sectors: adult, youth, music and multimedia areas. Three computers connected to the Internet are at your disposal. The library in Mézin regularly hosts exhibitions on various themes. Classes, crèches and groups are welcome on the themes proposed in the annual program. Accepts all proposals for partnerships and exhibition twinning.

With its modern, interactive display which invites visitors to look, listen and touch the exhibits, the Cork Museum recounts the history of cork-making from the 18th century to the present day. The museum also organises special events on national and regional holidays.
