This small semi-urban hike takes you to discover the ancient Périgueux and one of the seven hills that surround the city thanks to a ferry to cross the river (out of service in winter).

The Vézelay route is one of the great pilgrimage routes used by a thousand pilgrims each year who come from the north of Europe before entering France and reaching Vézelay, one of the great departures identified for the French routes. Leaving Périgueux, your steps will lead you to Chancelade where you can admire the abbey founded in 1132. You will then arrive at Les Andrivaux, a former Templar commandery, and after the calm of the forest, then the peace of the canal, you will notice the church of Saint Blaise and the miraculous fountain at Annesse and Beaulieu. Then there is Saint Astier and its church. The crypt of the XI th century shelters the tomb of the saint.

In 1908, a young English student, T E Lawrence, became fascinated with the medieval period. He decided to cycle around France on the trail of Richard the Lionheart. This third stage will take us from Périgueux to Hautefort, passing through the picturesque village of Le Change, gathered around its church. It belonged to the châtellenie of Auberoche. One of the great battles of the Hundred Years' War took place here in 1345. Going up to the chapel by the small road, the remains of the fortress dismantled in the 15th century give a glimpse of its former power. Going up the valley of the Auvézère, Lawrence will go to Forge d'Ans where thousands of cannons were sunk for the Royal Navy. Then on to Tourtoirac and its 11th century abbey. Finally, Lawrence arrives at Hautefort, whose castle was besieged by Richard the Lionheart in 1183.

Périgueux, capital of the Périgord, is labeled as a flowery city with 4 flowers but also as a City of Art and History. It has 44 monuments classified or registered as Historic Monuments, including the Saint Front cathedral which is also registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The route is located on a greenway from the train station of Périgueux to the abbey. On an old towpath, this greenway also allows you to reach the Saint Front cathedral by turning left. The canal was dug in the 19th century to facilitate navigation which was hindered by mills, at a time when barges were used to transport goods to the Bordeaux region.

Whether you are from Périgueux or just passing through, this greenway, a 15 km long path, is open to pedestrians, cyclists, rollerbladers and wheelchair users and crosses the Périgueux agglomeration from east to west. It offers you a quiet and bucolic walk, without ever leaving the river bank. You will leave from Trélissac, pass the Rhodas dam and then the Mounards dam, you will cross the Franck Grandou space and then after passing the Barnabé footbridge, you will see successively at the foot of the historical centre of Périgueux, the Houses of the Quays, the Cathedral St Front and the Old mill (l'eschif). A little further on, on a towpath, you will see the "maladrerie" which was once used as a shelter for the sick and homeless. Then take the cycle track parallel to the stadium path.

Let's take a walk in the woods among the deciduous and coniferous trees... On the edge of the paths you will notice in the right season: mildews, russules, chanterelles and other boletus. Wild rabbits and hares will accompany you along the route from where you can see part of the historical heritage of Trelissac including the Castle Magne, the Charterhouse of La Mothe and the church of Notre Dame de l'Assomption.

At the gates of Périgueux, accessible by the greenway, the marked paths of Trélissac are called Puyconteau, Caussade, the Fountains, Lauterie in reference to the environment of Trélissac. In a total change of scenery, at the bend in the road you will see a castle here, a fountain there, or even valleys and undergrowth. You will find, at the start of the stadium, the Nordic walking routes on a large reception panel common to the 5 proposed circuits to warm you up and acquire the technique. You can practice freely. If you are initiated and you have your own sticks you can go there freely. These routes are pleasant and slightly hilly, on paths, tracks and country roads. The most courageous hikers will enter the forest of Lanmary where they will see the castle of Caussade, an advanced post protecting the axis Limoges-Périgueux.

The abbey of Chancelade near Périgueux is the magical setting where this route begins. After passing the last houses, the small roads will lead you through the woods to the Romanesque priory of Merlande, another enchanting place. Then by a road of crest you will join Mensignac on the heights between the two valleys, before going down towards the Dronne, its points of bathe, its mills its rocks of climbing.

The route starts in Vergt, capital of the strawberry, Bastide Royale with its central market hall. You will go through landscapes of woods and valleys which reveal a heritage of another time. Ultimate and timeless refuge of all the banished, the dense forests recall troubled times. Croquants, under Louis XIV, and maquis during the second world war established their camps there. In Cendrieux, you will follow in the footsteps of Napoleon. Your journey will lead you to the gates of Sainte Alvère in the valley of the Louyre.

Founded in 980 and completed in 1047, the Cathedral is designed on a Greek Cross plan and has five domes: a magnificent bell tower crowns the ensemble. It is a so-called Byzantine construction with a large central dome, inspired by the Church of St. Archbishop of Venice (Italy - 977). Victor Hugo nicknamed it "the great mosque of Périgueux". A 12th and 15th century cloister borders it to the south-west.
