In 1916, the Courneau camp was set up on the commune, it was a training and wintering camp for the Senegalese riflemen. The deplorable climatic and sanitary conditions caused many lung infections and the death of 956 soldiers. Most of them were buried near the camp, a place called the Necropolis of the Natus. Today, a war memorial stands to remind us of these soldiers who fought for France and who were long forgotten.

Reaching right down to the ocean, this 104 meter high huge dune is blindingly white under the sun. The sand accumulates as it is relentlessly devouring the forest with a seafront of almost 3 km. A unique phenomenon by virtue of its alone, the view from the summit is quite simply remarkable.

It was designed in 1661 to link the Bassin d'Arcachon to Bayonne through the Landes ponds. This idea gave rise to numerous projects during the 17th and 18th centuries, but all of them were never implemented. In 1860, silted up, it was definitively condemned for navigation Since the end of navigation on the canal, it has evolved like a natural meandering river and conceals a particularly rich fauna of fish, otters, water birds, turtles....

The oldest mention of the existence of the parish of Cazaux is around the year 1200. In 1546, the Cazalins endowed the bell tower of their church with a new bell, now classified as a Historical Monument. In 1849, the Abbot Mouls found on his arrival a dilapidated church isolated from the village by marshes and brushwood. At his initiative, the church, which was then on the dune of the present cemetery, was carried by a sand path, stone by stone, by the inhabitants, with makeshift means, and rebuilt where it stands today.

The Banc d’Arguin, an immense sandbank between Cap Ferret and the Great Dune of Pilat, is a nature reserve which makes an ideal spot for amateur sailors to stop off for a summer picnic.
