The village of Beauronne was the village of potters for many years. The house of pottery installed in the heart of the village perpetuates the tradition and offers courses, exhibitions. The originality of the village can be seen when you look up with the many finials adorning the roofs of the buildings. Along the stream that gave its name to the village are the mills of Maine, Beauronne and Petit Boissonnie which is converted into fish farming. The loop of the potters is a superb family walk on the trail of the potters between forest and small heritage. The route is punctuated by water points: fountains, streams, ponds... ideal for our dog friends!

The forest of the Double is overflown every year by flights of wood pigeons. The blue bird, which in the southwest is called the pigeon, migrates from Scandinavia to southern Europe and even Africa to spend the winter. The peak of the birds' passage in the Dordogne is between October and November. Each year, the Federation of hunters carries out monitoring of the goshawks: they are counted as they pass through the Pyrenean passes; some are equipped with Argos beacons to study their migration behavior. Finally, in Dordogne, sedentary goshawks are ringed to study their movements. In the forest of the Double, the paloumayres (pigeon hunters) are numerous. You will pass by some of them. In these installations, the hunters attract the pigeons and encourage them to land in the trees.

Its position on the Isle River provided the motive force for the current, then electricity for its machines. Using local know-how, craftsmen became dynamic entrepreneurs. They invented new systems, registered patents and developed their workshops into specialized factories. The town modernized rapidly, expanding with the arrival of factory workers and becoming a small industrial area between 1860 and 1970. Don't believe us? The route is recommended for mountain bikes or VTC as it is partly on forest tracks. You will cross hamlets and villages of the Double and will pass by the farm of Parcot, a model of traditional farm open to the public, before arriving at the Grand Etang which offers multiple activities around water, fauna and flora typical of the Double.

The Isle valley and the nearby Double forest were an active centre of resistance during the Second World War. This resistance, sometimes paid for at a high price, has left its mark on people's minds and on the landscape. From the Mussidan station, a place of important battles, the route will lead you to the forest of the Double where the maquis camps are evoked, their functioning, the battles, the tragedies and the victories, to Neuvic station where the resistance succeeded in the biggest heist of the 20th century.

The Isle is a river on which a lot of merchandise was transported between the Périgord and the Gironde. They were transported by flat-bottomed boats that were towed from the shore to their place of origin.

The walk begins quietly with the discovery of charming hamlets with a rich built heritage (Bernardoux, Mauriac) to continue in the forest and finally return to the starting point by the charming streets of the village. The village was inhabited 15,000 years before our era, as evidenced by objects from the Magadalene period discovered on various sites. However, it is the Gallo-Roman remains that give us the first precise information on the history of Douzillac and Mauriac, two names testify to this: Dulciliacum and Marius which became Douzillac and Mauriac.

In 1908, a young English student, T E Lawrence, was fascinated by the medieval period. He decided to cycle around France on the trail of Richard the Lionheart. This second stage will take us from Mussidan to Périgueux along the Isle Valley. Just after Bourgnac you will see the castle of Montreal and then crossing the Crempsoulie valley, the castle of Maupas. From Saint Séverin d'Estissac the road parallel to the river leads to Vallereuil and its Romanesque church. Then on to the castle of Grignols, hidden behind a hill. After a passage near Saint Astier, you will arrive in Périgueux and its Byzantine cathedral.
