You have to go up to reach Calignac. Perched on a hillock above the Auvignon valley, the village was once fortified and protected by a castle. There are still some remains of the ramparts.

The Saumont, from saltus montus, means wooded height. The route descends towards the Petit Auvignon, which it crosses on a Roman bridge. It then crosses an open landscape of hills, typical of Gascony.

The commune of Saumont is located on the slopes of Albret, in the Auvignon valley. In the 14th century, the lordship of Saumont belonged to a branch of the Albret family, before becoming the property of the Béarn family. At the beginning of the 19th century, the town still had two groups of houses, the first of which, located in front of the castle, was completely destroyed in the 19th century. Some houses still have vestiges of the 16th century, but the other houses were rebuilt in the 20th century. Fontarède can be seen in the distance between two small valleys. Although not very high, the site is clear of the neighbouring hillsides. You can see the villages of Montagnac-sur-Auvignon, Moncaut and Calignac. The church dates from the 12th century, massive, it is flanked by a round tower that serves as a bell tower. A medallion represents Christ in majesty.

Situated at an altitude of 200 m, Montagnac offers a 360° panorama on the "sea of hills" that it dominates. Above the traditional stone houses, the large tower of the church steeple asserts the silhouette of the village. From the covered way running around the surrounding walls, the view extends over the Landes, the Lomagne, the Garonne valley and, on a clear day, over the Pyrenees mountain range. The colourful mosaic of the hillsides reveals the richness of the land: vineyards and orchards, cereals and sunflowers, woods and meadows, all landscapes to be admired along this circuit where the built heritage and the numerous pigeon lofts also play an important role, and reflect the prosperity of the hillsides.

Over hills and valleys, through woods and vineyards, these places impress: the panorama of Espiens, the site of the Château de Salles, one of the private cellars of Buzet which opens its cellars to the public.

From 110 to 192 m of altitude, the viewpoints abound. Fieux, St-Ourens, Puy-Fort-Éguille, Lamothe, Garlies, the landscape where these Occitan place names resound opens up from ever-changing angles.

This itinerary, which crosses Nérac, the capital of Albret, presents the Baïse Valley from the hillsides to the plain. It offers numerous viewpoints on the town and panoramic views over wide landscapes. On the way you can admire the richness of Nérac's historical heritage and discover the history of the Albret family with a short detour to the Henri IV castle-museum. You will pass through the Parc de la Garenne, a delightful wooded walk of "3000 paces" along the right bank of the Baïse, designed by Queen Margot in the 16th century and laid out by Henri II. The park has a remarkable forest heritage and many monuments, particularly fountains fed by natural springs and linked to the history of the Albret family: the Saint Jean fountain, the Poupettes fountain, the Marguerites fountain, the Fleurette cave...

We propose a walk linking two "Major Sites of Aquitaine", located in the town of Nérac: the Henri IV Castle-Museum and the Mill of the Towers, possessions of the Albret family. From the valley of the Baïse to the valley of the Gélise, you will walk along the panoramic hillside that separates them until their confluence. The visit in Nérac will pass by the street of the castle, the Cours Roma, the place of the General Leclerc where the statue of Henri IV is enthroned, and the alleys of Albret. The road then climbs the hillside of the Château Pierron vineyard. Successive viewpoints lead the eye to the Bréchan hillside, on the right bank of the Baïse, and to the green immensity of the Landaise forest on the left bank of the Gélise. Perhaps you will come across pilgrims on their way to St-Jacques-de-Compostelle on one of the routes coming from Vézelay.

This walk starts in the shady park of La Garenne on the banks of the Baïse river and then crosses the river before going through the historic streets of Nérac around the Henri IV castle. It owes its existence to Marguerite de Valois, grandmother of Henri IV, who settled there in 1530 after her marriage to Henri II, King of Navarre. She made Nerac an academy welcoming outcasts such as Lefèvre d'Etaples, Clément Marot and probably Calvin. In 1548 Jeanne d'Albret, their daughter, married Antoine de Bourbon with whom she had a son, the future king of France. In 1572, Henri married the daughter of the King of France and Catherine de Medici, the second Marguerite de Valois, better known as Queen Margot. It is to her that we owe the creation of a walk in the park of the Garenne. This circuit ends with a passage in the small Nerac, which overlooks the river, right bank.

Queen Margot spent some of the happiest years of her life on the banks of these rivers; the navigable Baïse which flows along the Garenne park and at the foot of the castle of Nérac (360° panorama), its tributary the Gélise where the Moulin des Tours de Barbaste is located, the Osse which borders the path used by the future Henri IV to reach the capital of Béarn from Albret.

Montagnac-sur-Auvignon, ancien village fortifié, culmine à 197 mètres d'altitude. La cité, bâtie autour de son église, s'est entourée de fortifications, qu'elle a renforcées plusieurs fois, signe que la ville était un poste de défense relativement important.
