Serenity and Discoveries in Saint-bernard, Haut-Rhin, Alsace

The TDS Vélo (Tour du Sundgau) is a new one-, two- or three-day cycling itinerary which, as its name suggests, takes in the Sundgau region of southern Alsace. It uses the region's cycle paths, quiet winding roads and existing cycle routes, to offer a beautiful 125 km loop, with just over 1000 m of ascent and descent. You'll discover the valleys of the Ill and Largue rivers, with their many beautiful half-timbered houses, and ride through the magnificent Alsatian Jura massif, where you'll be able to soar high and take in many panoramic views. In the meantime, GPS tracks are available for download, so that you can follow the 125 km of the loop with peace of mind. For those who wish, variants are available. These allow you to extend or reduce the length of the official route.

The WWI battles erupted in Sundgau fromAugust 1914 onwards. The front line was afew kilometres from Illfurth, on the Heidwillerside, and cut the Sundgau in two. This circuit,starting from Burnkirch church, enables you todiscover several multi-purpose constructionswhich served as munitions depots, observationposts and artillery emplacements, not forgettingthe numerous bunkers presentedon the site. Distance : 6.5 km (2.5 hours).

This route starts in Raedersdorf and leads to Altkirch, capital of the Sundgau region. Situated at the crossroads of Switzerland and Germany, this Alsatian region is famous for its beautiful half-timbered farmhouses, its many ponds, its varied landscapes, its authentic heritage and its culinary specialty: Carpe-Frite. The Ill Valley cycle route passes through several emblematic towns in southern Alsace. In particular, you'll discover Hirtzbach, also known as "la perle du fleurissement", famous for its "village fleuri" label, its park and the Château de Reinach. Between nature and heritage, you can discover the Oltingue farm museum and the Raedersdorf stork enclosure.

This itinerary go through typical villages where you will soak up the atmosphere of rural sundgau. Cycling through the gradually changing scenery, you will discover the Hundsbach valley, delineating a hilly landscape.

This itinerary includes varied landscape outlined by the Sungauvian hills. You can start your voyage of discovery in Altkirch, capital of the Sundgau (population : 6,000). From Carspach, the road through the forest leads to the Largue Valley cycle track. The itinerary uses the cycle track along the Rhône/Rhine canal as far as Illfurth, with striking views over the Vosges mountains. The best way to take this route is starting from the car park by the river Ill in Altkirch.

This tour will take you around St Glucker's Chapel (on the site of what once was Saint-Léger village) and farther on up to Neiweiher pond. Walk along the stream that runs through the floral village of Hirtzbach and explore Reinach Park, the last icehouse in Sundgau and its castle. Do not hesitate to visit them! You can also see Sonnenberg Institute, a private school, which was a spa in 1850.

Explore Gommersdorf, a farming village rich in pasture and livestock. Do not hesitate to take a look at the beautiful traditional houses in the village or at the half-timbered facade of the Auberge du Tisserand! The Association of Peasant houses was founded In this town and some houses reconstructed at the Alsace Eco museum come from Gommersdorf! From St Marguerite's Chapel, you take a path that goes towards the Rhone-Rhine Canal. You can go along the canal to Wolfersdorf harbour. This walking tour will also allow you to see the reservoir.

On the front line, between bunkers and trenches The tour is punctuated by bunkers which used to mark out the frontline during the first World War. Along the trail you will discover other places such as mills, a washing place and the Hagendorn spring. Historical explanations will be given by signs next to the bunkers. At the edge of the Doller river a shelter made of wood fitted out with a barbecue area will enable to halt. Length: a 9 kilometer loop. Duration: two and half hours. Start: from the church in Burnhaupt-le-bas, follow the red ring.

Your walk will be punctuated by riddles, so keep your eyes peeled to make sure you don't miss a thing! Be curious, observe and collect the clues you need to solve the enigma! This half-woodland, half-forest circuit, situated in the last hills of the Sundgau, allows you to discover some beautiful half-timbered houses, the chapel of Notre Dame du Chêne, the Steinbaechlein, hundred-year-old oaks and vestiges of the 1914-18 war. The starting point is at the back of the town hall, right next to the church.

DEPARTING FROM LAUSANNE, HEAD TO THE MEDIEVAL TOWN OF GRUYÈRES, HOME TO THE FAMOUS SWISS CHEESE! Departing from Lausanne, head to the medieval town of Gruyères, home to the famous Swiss cheese!  Leave Lausanne by bus and climb up into the alpine pastures to reach Gruyères.  After a tour around the town, your guide will take you to a Swiss chocolate factory to show you how famous Swiss chocolate is made.  Then head to an old alpine cheese factory. Enjoy a Swiss cheese tasting and learn more about the national dish: fondue.  Learn to make your own Swiss fondue and try the traditional dish.  After your meal, relax and climb on board the Golden Express, a panoramic train which crosses the alpine pastures and the heights of Lake Geneva. Enjoy incredible views of the lake and the Alps. When you get off the train, get back on your bus and head to Lavaux and its terraced vineyards. At the end of the forest, you can make a 200-metre round trip to admire a bi-centennial silver willow (circumference 8.40 m), the only survivor of the 1974 land consolidation.

At the corner of the wood, there is a beautiful view of the village of Galfingue, the peaks of the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Jura.

Hidden in the Limberg forest are several remnants of German war shelters from 1914-18 that sheltered the rear lines of the front that was located a few kilometres away, near Burnhaupt-le-Haut.

At the exit of the forest, a three hundred year old oak tree (circumference 4.70 m) stands like a sentinel opposite the fields.

Back in Heimsbrunn, the Saint Joseph fishing pond reflects some of the new houses in the village.

When you arrive on the road (the old Mulhouse-Belfort main road), you follow and then cross the Steinbaechlein, a river which flows from the Doller at Pont d'Aspach and which flows into the Ill shortly after Mulhouse. The Steinbaechlein once fed a series of mills, and then, from 1746 onwards, made the Mulhouse textile industry rich thanks to its crystal clear water from the Vosges.

The chapel of Notre Dame du Chêne, called Ramahay by the locals, was built in 1959 not far from an oak tree which, on the other side of the road, housed a statue of the Virgin and which was struck by lightning in 1947. Since the 19th century, many pilgrims have come to pray here and the chapel is still very popular today, especially on the feast of the Assumption. Next to the chapel, a whole wall is covered with ex votos (thanks to the Virgin).

On the edge of the main road, you first pass the Sainte Anne retirement home, created in 1819, then a calvary dating from 1869 which recalls the memory of a young man (Joseph Sitterlen) who died at the age of 27.

Opposite the chapel, crossing the road, you can go and admire (200m round trip) the Saint Louis oak tree, probably the oldest in the former seigneury of Heimsbrunn. It is said to be between 300 and 700 years old.

On arrival in front of the church of Heimsbrunn, a glance at house N°6 rue de Belfort reveals a beautiful half-timbered house. Dating from the 17th century, it has a porch surmounted by a loggia, buttressed windows and a slight corbel. The richness of its architecture suggests the property of a notable or a craftsman. A little further on, at nos. 8 and 10 rue de Belfort, two other timber-framed farmhouses are a little less old (18th or 19th century) but very typical.

In the story Hansel and Gretel, the witch's hut is the gingerbread house! To live a unique moment in this cabin, go to Camping des Castors. The cabin, these furniture and the beds were handmade with Vosges wood. The hut was built in the image of the witch, that is to say, a single large room arranged and thought to spend an unusual stay. At your disposal, a kitchenette, with a table and stool for the meal. A double bed and a loft bed for a child. The toilets are in common and are 20 m from the cabin.
