Located in the Chalosse region of the Landes département, Habas is one of the 24 communes of the Communauté de Communes du Pays d?Orthe et Arrigans. This charming village, set on the heights of the Gave de Pau, has a population of around 1,500, and has maintained its vitality thanks to a rich network of associations and the preservation of its local shops. Habas takes its name from the Gascon word "fabas", meaning a place fertile with beans. Located on the Roman road linking Bordeaux to Astorga, the area became a stopping-off point for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela in the 14th century. At the same time, the town began to develop around its feudal castle, the site of today?s town hall. In 1638, Louis XIII granted Habas letters patent authorizing the holding of a market every Friday.

From Salies-de-Béarn to the Eiffel bridge at Castagnède, on the Gave d'Oloron, a greenway follows the former route of a railway. Flat and mostly shaded, very colourful in autumn, it is particularly suitable for family walks. While strolling under the oaks, you may, who knows, hear the black woodpecker or see a titmouse near the barthes of Salies.

A short stage, exclusively on secondary roads, links Salies-de-Béarn and Orthez, two important cities in the history of Béarn. The route immediately rises above the hills of Salies and then turns into the valley of the Gave de Pau, a powerful river fed by the snow and springs of the Pyrenees. The V81 now goes up its course, today towards Orthez, tomorrow towards Pau, the day after tomorrow towards Lourdes. The populations have invested for a long time these open places and favourable to the agriculture. Thus, on the way, you will be able to discover the contemporary cultures of kiwis and to appreciate the richness of the built heritage; by a light detour towards the castle and the portal of the church of Bellocq, or within the beautiful Béarnaise houses of Bérenx and its old mills. Sainte-Suzanne already announces the proximity of Orthez.

This superb loop between the Gaves de Pau and Oloron is full of interest. The number of castles, bastides and abbeys enchants the route. On the cyclo plan, the very hilly profile with difficult climbs on country roads requires a good training.

Salies-de-Béarn, the "city of salt", has many facets that we'll be delighted to explore on a multi-stage journey: a stroll along the old railway line, accessible to all wheels, a visit to old Salies, which takes us back to the 17th century, and a fun and sporting getaway at the Mosquéros leisure park.

This hike offers walkers a remarkable diversity of landscapes. Departing from Salies-de-Béarn, it takes in farms, forests and ponds, all set against the backdrop of the Pyrenees mountain range.

Misson is a small village that stretches over 14.7 kilometres. It is situated at an altitude of 90 metres and has about 800 inhabitants. It is crossed by the stream of Leplace, the stream of Grand Arrigan and the stream of Yats. Misson is twinned with the town of Arnac in the Cantal. In 1641, Misson belonged to the royal provostry of Dax, which bought from Louis XII certain domain rights. Fifty years ago, Misson was home to renowned clog makers and gem makers. Today these trades have disappeared but they reappear in some craft exhibitions. Nowadays, the identity of the village reflects a long history.

Sorde-l'Abbaye offers a very ancient historical heritage of a rare richness in Aquitaine. Sandwiched between a limestone hillside and the Gave d'Oloron, the site has developed in an advantageous geographical area. This territory, open to the Pyrenees and the plains of Aquitaine, has favoured the passage of men and animals. The human imprint is visible from prehistoric times to the present day: rock shelters from the Magdalenian period, Roman villas on the ancient road linking Bordeaux to Spain, a Benedictine abbey founded in the 10th century and listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO as part of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela in France. The current town, surrounded by ramparts in the 13th century, was built around the abbey complex.

From Sorde l'Abbaye, head for Saint-Cricq du Gave. On the way, stop off at Kiwis Délices to buy your kiwi juice and jam. You'll pass many kiwi orchards. Continue downhill towards Carresse Cassaber, then back on the road towards Sorde l?Abbaye. Take the opportunity to visit the Abbaye de Sorde, located in the heart of the bastide. You'll go head-to-head with your opponents, trying to score points. In lasertag, you use laser toys to mark your opponents and move around by hiding behind modules placed on the pitch. Suitable for children aged 7 and over. The playground is located on the same site as the canoe base, for a variety of fun.

In the heart of the village of Sorde the Abbey, walk through the remarkable architectural complex of the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde, classified as Historic Monuments and inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List under the Pilgrimages of Santiago de Compostela in France . During the guided visit (about 45 minutes) of the Abbey or during the unaccompanied visit (depending on the season), discover its open air spaces, its majestic terrace, then its exceptional underground gallery. Bellocq is an atypical bastide because it has no square space. The viscounts of Béarn used here the checkerboard plan for a town supporting a military fortress. The perfectly designed right-angled streets facilitated the circulation of troops. The strong point of Bellocq is its castle built between 1250 and 1280 by Gaston VII, Viscount of Béarn, on a rocky peak overlooking the Gave. Gaston Fébus had the castle reinforced in 1370. With its square bell tower, the fortified church dates from the 13th century. The main portal is enriched with sculptures, one of which represents "the pilgrim with a beret" holding a long stick in his right hand, evoking the journey to Santiago de Compostela, whose road in the Middle Ages passed through Bellocq. The castle can be visited on request all year round for groups of at least 4 people.

The Salies-de-Béarn discovery trail was built on an old railway track and offers a route to enhance the wild flora and fauna of Béarn des gaves. Thanks to information panels, everyone can improve their knowledge of a preserved natural environment. Guided tours are organized in July and August.
