Near Mareuil, there is an educational truffle farm to understand how the "black gold of the Périgord" grows. Accessible by footpath, it can be a pleasant and instructive outing for the whole family. The 11 kilometre walk allows you to discover the limestone soils around Mareuil which are ideal for truffle cultivation, and in a hamlet, the small shop of a truffle grower (please let us know the day before you come).

The Combiers path, which starts at the village hall, is 11 km long. Along the path, you will see the town hall, the church and the castles of Lasfond and La Rochebeaucourt.

The path of Rauzet whose departure is at the grandmontaine church of Rauzet is of a length of 6km. Before leaving, take the time to visit this church as well as the hut of the leafcutter located next to it.

The Émilie trail, which starts from the parking lot of the arboretum, is 6.4 km long. You will discover the arboretum and cross the forest of La Mothe Clédou.

From the village of La Rochebeaucourt located on the border of the Dordogne and the Charente, a path leads to the village of Argentina, home to a beautiful legend. Situated on a rocky spur overlooking the Nizonne valley, the small village of Argentina, in addition to its small half-Romanesque, half-Gothic church, once located on a pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, has a troglodytic complex known locally as "cluzeaux", which has been developed over several periods. For hikers, a 4.5 km trail allows you to discover the limestone plateau and its richness in flora and heritage.

Located on the borders of the Dordogne and Charente departments, the Argentine limestone plateau is one of the major natural sites of the Périgord Limousin Regional Nature Park. Various elements enrich the route with historical and cultural interest: - the Romanesque church, which keeps the memory of its transformations since the 11th century; - the singular landscape linked to the geology and to the Cretaceous period when, at the location of the Mareuil country, a vast lagoon protected by a coral reef extended; - the quarries which form a network of 50 ha of galleries, where the inhabitants worked from a very young age; - the ruins of the castle reminding the legend of the beautiful Argentine. This original industry has left behind it a labyrinth of quarries strewn with stone monsters, some Roman, others from yesterday. The castle and its powerful keep now houses the workshop-museum of the weavers and the charentaise, which traces the history of textiles in the region. A street leads down to the "Crochet" stream which hosts the Lud? eau vive.

The Romanesque church Saint-Etienne (Saint Stephen) of Beaussac was built in the 12th century and consists of one single nave and two aisles. The church of Beaussac is listed as a Historical Monument since 1948.

The cave of Beaussac is adorned with natural concretions. Different themes are developed during the tour: genesis speleology, underground fauna, concretions, prehistoric man and caveman. Accessories for introduction to speleology are provided. Bring boots and change of clothes. Open to children from 9 years. Meeting place: stadium of Beaussac.

A first fortress of which there are only a few remains in the rocks was built in the 11th century on a natural defensive site. During the Hundred Years’ War, it was occupied by the English, but the seneschal of Poitou besieged it and took it back in 1435. Round shots made from stone weighing 100 kg attest that he had to use a mangonel (type of catapult) to obtain the surrender of the garrison. When peace returned, a dwelling was rebuilt on the edge of the cliff and a staircase tower was added around 1500. Torn into pieces during the Wars of Religion then abandoned, it was rebuilt in 1617 by its new owner, Jean de Conan, who adjoined two “pepperbox turrets”. A narrow terrace overlooking the emptiness was added during the reign of Louis XIV. Visit of the exteriors: central courtyard and view of the surrounding countryside from July 1st to August 20th.

Close to a Romanesque church with a wall-shaped bell tower, within a vast enclosure that still retains one of its machicolated châtelets, this château, remodeled in the 17th century, comprises two square-shaped main buildings, framed by 3 pavilions. The south-facing terraces offer distant views. Free admission to the exterior from July 1 to August 31, 2024, and for the Journées du Patrimoine (Heritage Days) from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm and from 2:30 pm to 6 pm.

The church Saint-Jean of Puyrenier is a charming little church whose most distinctive element is undoubtedly its belfry. Squared and surmounted by a slate-covered dome, it rises on top of the nave’s entrance.

The Romanesque church of Saint-Sulpice-de-Mareuil was built in the 12th century. It has a single nave and an ante-choir covered with a vault above which rises a square belfry. The portal is richly decorated (angels, griffins). Listed as a Historical Monument since 1948.

The nave of this 12th century church terminates in a flat apse. The square choir is covered with a cupola on pendentives. The western façade is decorated with a series of blind arches resting on columns whose capitals are decorated with foliage and animals. Listed as a Historical Monument.

The building juxtaposes parts from feudal times to elements of late 17th century. Castellany from 1253, its towers housed during the reign of King Louis XII Antoine d’Authon, better known as Barbarossa, pasha of Algiers and admiral of the Turkish fleet. This seigneurial residence is filled with the local history of forges in Northern Périgord since many munitions for the King’s navy were manufactured here.

Seat of one of the four baronies of the Périgord – along with Beynac, Biron and Bourdeilles – the castle of Mareuil is a lowland castle rebuilt in the 15th century on the site of a medieval stronghold destroyed during the Hundred Years’ War. Besides a Flamboyant Gothic style chapel, the castle also houses a room dedicated to the First French Empire in which furniture and documents tell the story of Marshal Lannes, duke of Montebello (1769-1809), ancestor of the present owners. The famous troubadour Arnaut de Mareuil was born in Mareuil in the 12th century.
