Uncover the wonders of Arches, Cantal, Auvergne

This trail takes you back to a time when the ruins of Tony's old mill bear witness to the austerity of yesteryear. The milling industry was of paramount importance to the rural world, which lived in virtual autarky. The route takes you through the wilderness of the Triouzoune gorges. You'll find typical country villages and enjoy superb views of the Monts d'Auvergne. Variant: +1.4km 2h30. Yellow markings.

The route follows the "old road" that once linked Neuvic to Mauriac via the convent of Saint-Projet le Désert, now swallowed up by the Aigle dam reservoir. Beyond the impressive gorges of the Dordogne, a protected area and land of birds of prey, lies the Auvergne. The trail evokes life in the villages of yesteryear. Sechadours (chestnut drying sheds) and slate-covered wells are typical of the Haute Corrèze region. The walk ends at the village of Vent-Haut. The route is counter-clockwise. The start is 5 km south of Neuvic, on the D982 towards Mauriac, at the Vent-Haut group gîte.

A hike that takes you from Vendes and its impressive viaduct to the summit of Puy du Mas. Some of the slopes are a little rough, but most are shaded by oak trees. The viaduct, which spans the Sumène Gorge for almost 367 m, is the second longest viaduct in the Cantal region, after the Garabit viaduct. 46m high, it is made up of granite piers supporting a heavy metal deck comprising 5 spans, each with a span of 66m (at the ends) and 78m (for the 3 central spans). It took around 12 tonnes of paint to cover the 15,000m² structure! See the nearby 12th-century chapel. Departure point: Hameau de Vendes. This hike takes you over Vendes, a charming village nestled at the entrance to the Sumène Gorge, offering lovely panoramic views of the valley and the Sancy mountains in the distance. Dating from the 12th century, but undoubtedly older, the Vendes chapel is dedicated to Saint-Jacques. Vendes must have been located on a secondary route which, in the Middle Ages, led pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela in Spain. The little path behind the chapel is still known as the "Chemin de Saint-Jacques". The return journey to Vendes follows an ancient Roman road that linked Clermont to Toulouse. A military milestone discovered at Gorces near Ydes-Bourg (now visible in the Château de Val chapel), provides evidence of the existence of this road in Gallo-Roman times. Departure point: Hameau de Vendes. From the Louis Brousse school parking lot in the center of the hamlet of Vendes, take the road on the right, looking towards the school. Join the départementale in the direction of Veyrières.

Tarmac sections open to traffic: 20%. This circuit follows the route of PR 24 and, despite some difficult sections, offers a short introduction to mountain biking. Depart from the Louis Brousse school parking lot in the center of the hamlet of Vendes, take the left-hand road opposite the school (nearby 12th-century chapel). 1. At a wide bend in the road, turn right onto a small asphalt road. Once you've passed the last dwellings, this road gives way to a wide track which leads to the vacation village. 2. Just before the first houses in La Baraque, turn right down a wide track. At the first fork in the road, turn left uphill. 3. In sight of the summit, take the right-hand path down into the forest, cross a talweg and then climb up the forest slope to a wide, passable track. 4. Turn right on this ancient Roman road, which leads to Vendes at the Château.

At the T-junction, turn left; continue straight ahead until you reach the point where the tracks cross.Turn right and stay on the main track, which arcs round to Le Vent Bas, ignoring several paths and tracks on your right. Where the tracks cross in a T shape, turn left towards the village.At the first house, take the road to the left and follow it as far as the intersection with the D 982. Turn left and go up for 200 m.Take the trail to the right, cross the stream and follow the path that winds upwards and then straight on. After the steep path, follow the path on the left. Continue to the end of the wood, ignoring several paths on your left. Where the tracks meet, turn right and then left. Cross over to go into Le Vent-Haut.In the village, turn right twice. Follow the track. At the T-junction, go right: follow the track you took on the outward journey in the opposite direction; it leads back to the starting point.

This hike takes you via the Piste Verte and the Bassignac viaduct to the ruins of the Château de Charlus. These offer a vast panorama that alone is worth the effort of climbing to the summit. Castrum Carlicium was one of the most important fortresses in Haute Auvergne. Comprising a large square keep, two main buildings and a chapel, the castle was surrounded by a first wall protected by a dozen round towers with battlements and machicolations. A platform terrace served as the second wall. Richelieu ordered its destruction in 1633. Today, only a few remnants of the walls remain. Departure point: junction of the D512 and the Piste Verte. Between Le Marlat and Parensol, the start is at the crossroads between the D512 and the Piste Verte (parking lot). Follow the D512 uphill. Just before the small bridge at the head of the hairpin, take the path on the right that climbs to the Pic de Charlus.

This bridge in the commune of Sérandon connects Corrèze and Cantal, via the road from Pont de St Projet to Sérandon. Built in the 1940s, following the construction of the Aigle dam and the drowning of the Triouzoune valley.

It was essential to provide access to drinking water in the heart of the village, especially when springs were less accessible or non-existent. The presence of many shallow water tables in the area explains the large number of traditional wells.

In the upper Dordogne valley, the Saint-Projet suspension bridge spans the river Dordogne in a single span of 195 metres. It links the communes of Neuvic in Corrèze and the department of Cantal. The old bridge, built in the 19th century, was replaced by a new one in 1945 when the Aigle dam was built between 1941 and 1945, as the old one had been drowned by the dam's retention.

In the past, many villages had their own bread ovens, often owned jointly by the inhabitants. In addition to allowing the production of this staple food, the bread oven, like the spring and the washhouse, was a particularly convivial place for the villagers to meet.

Beyond the Dordogne, we will see the Monts du Cantal during this hike. This massif is, in fact, the remnant of a stratovolcano born 13 million years ago, the largest in Europe, eroded by collapse and glacial erosion.

Romanesque style chapel. Years of construction: 11th and 12th centuries. Classified as a historical monument in 1972. Although the nave has undergone alterations (vault, openings) over the centuries, the current chapel dates from the Romanesque period. The building features a rectangular nave, a semicircular apse, and a bell gable pierced by two twin bays. The western portal, with its round arch, bears the date 1778 on its lintel. An open forecourt surrounds the chapel, enhancing its presence in the village. Visit and access: Self-guided visits are possible; keys can be obtained from the Bassignac town hall (04 71 40 82 33). The interior is rather simple and is sometimes used for art exhibitions in the summer.

The location of this isolated school may be surprising, but it was obviously put there to be equidistant from several villages. Unfortunately, the decline in the number of pupils led to its closure; transformed into a large capacity gîte, it now hosts family get-togethers, green classes, nature discovery courses, etc.

Originating in the Massif du Sancy, the river Dordogne merges with the Garonne to form the Gironde estuary.Between Corrèze and Cantal, the presence of gorges has favoured the construction of hydroelectric dams. Also worth a visit: Château de Val and the Bort-les-Orgues dam and organs. In winter, the ski resorts of Le Mont-Dore and Chastreix are nearby (approx. 50min).
