A sporty hike in the heart of the Mercantour Park, the summit of Mangiabo offers a splendid 360° panorama over the high peaks of the Eastern Mercantour, the border summits, and the sea from San Remo to the Cap d'Antibes and the Estérel massif to the southwest. The itinerary is entirely in the heart of the Mercantour park, and is subject to its regulations. 1) Coming from Breil, take the 1st track on the right, just after the Brouis pass (879 m), ball. 124. Continue straight on, and park at the level of the old barracks and blockhouses. 2) Bal. 125, start the ascent to the Baisse de Levens (1093 m), bal. 139. 3) Turn right at the drop, the route follows the rising ridge line. 4) In large, steeply sloping pastures, the path bends to the right, and crosses crosses the slope to reach the next ridge line. Then, with Then, with a few big laces, join the ridge at marker 144 (1777 m). 5) Another 5 minutes on the ridge to reach the summit (1821 m), marked by a large cairn. 6) Return by the same route. NB: it is possible to reach the summit of Mangiabo from Sospel by the GR 52, and from Moulinet.

Beautiful hike starting from the Col de Brouis between Breil sur Roya and Sospel.

Hiking with views of Menton Bay and surrounding mountains, from Mount Razet (1,285 m) Maginot works of “la Pierre Pointue” where blockhouses, galleries, casemates or other turrets literally fill the ground From the Col de Castillon car park (730 m), follow on foot (north) the small road reserved for the residents of the Biatonéa district. A path soon rises to the left above a few houses; take it to a flat area and continue the ascent along a wide path with a steep gradient, which is followed by a winding path that winds through the cliffs of Mont Roulabre. You reach a fork in the road (1,168 m - b.92) just below the Scuvion drop; from here, head south on a quasi-horizontal crossing that leads via beacon 93 to the southern shoulder of Mount Razet where the "Pierre Pointue" (1,176 m) stands, a grey limestone tooth surrounded by military works. It is possible from this point to climb to the summit of Mont Razet (orientation table) by a small confidential path (b.93a); in this case add 110 m of ascent for 30 minutes of walking back and forth. Go back to marker 93, then descend on a beautiful winding path that runs through scree at the foot of a system of limestone bars. An oak grove precedes the abandoned countryside of Fontanelle, then come the first houses of the Biatonéa district where you find the small road followed on the way up.

Superb ridge walk on a track, technically easy and short. Arrival at the top of Mount Grazian, breathtaking 360° view of the sea to the south and the eastern end of the Mercantour with Mount Bego and the Marguareis massif to the extreme north-east. Park at the Col de Brouis, altitude 879 m, located between Sospel and Breil-sur-Roya on the RD 2204. The view is already magnificent, with the village of Saorge clinging to the steep slopes opposite you on the north side. You can also choose to cycle to the Col de Brouis from Breil on the RD 2204, or on the GR 52A, or from Sospel. Marker 124. Take the track that leaves on the north side to the left of the inn. It will pass quickly to the south. Continue straight ahead (do not take the track that goes left towards the antennas and the cime du Bosc). You follow the GR52 A route up to the marker 119 at the Col de Paula. There, the GR will go down on the right by a path, You take the right track. (The track on the left leads to the very pretty perched hamlet of Piene-Haute: on the way back you can choose to make a detour to visit this eagle's nest, its churches and chapel and its castle, and enjoy the breathtaking view). Along the way you will see some old border markers. A few hairpin bends and you are at the top of Mount Grazian, which dominates Sospel and its fields, nothing stopping your vision, Mount Grazian being an isolated summit. Return by the same route. Remember to take water, the route is in full sun. Avoid the hottest hours of the day in midsummer; in summer, early mornings or evenings are best.

Castillon-Sainte Agnès by the forest trail (2h one way): It starts at the Col de Castillon, on the site of the ruins of two old villages. Walking is easy on this old mule track.

A nice walk round-trip in the paths, in the middle of nature. Departure: Castillon Village Arrival: The old village at the Col de Castillon, and back. Take the staircase which is to the left when arriving at the parking lot of Arcades du Serre, a path starts on the left in an undergrowth, crosses a valley, then climbs under the chestnut trees. Arriving on the small road of the place called «Les Remégons», turn left, follow this paved road up to a departmental that one crosses, opposite is a cement slope going down to a house, take it for a few meters and then go down on a path that is to the left of this track, cross a small stream and follow this path with a gentle uphill slope, following the natural curve of the valley. When you arrive on a paved road, continue to the left at no. 5824, climb the cement slope that leads to a property, just before the gate, climb a very high step to the left and take the path that leads to the old village.

Take the staircase to the left, arriving at the parking lot of the Arcades du Serre, a path starts on the left in an undergrowth, crosses a valley, then goes up under the chestnut trees. Arriving on the little road of the place called «Le Remegon», follow it on the right, at the end of the track take a path passing between two properties. It descends to the ruins of the chapel of Saint Antonin, the return is made on a small paved road passing in front of the hotel restaurant «La Bergerie», at the bottom of the village.

Nice walk along the GR510 to reach Sospel. We recommend you hike from Breil to Piène Haute, then continue to Sospel (7h30 total). Depart from Piene Haute via the D193 westward then descend via a stony chelin via the GR 510 (tag 440). After the Saint Jérôme chapel, the path narrows along olive groves. Leave the cultivated lands and while remaining vaguely on the crest, join the D93 (markers 441 and 442) about thirty meters from the Italian border. Follow the road for 300m and take a descending steep path that avoids a bend. Another 100m of tar, then take on the right (tag 443) a path which winds in a ledge above the Bévéra and which is equipped with a botanical path through the town of Sospel. We soon reach the Caï bridge over which the Nice-Cuneo railway line crossed. Go under the bridge, cross the valley of Basséra and go up to the other end of the Pont de Caï. From the bridge, take a dirt road that climbs to the right and join the D93 which you take to the bridge over the Nieya stream where you enter a shaded path that avoids a wide bend in the road. This path then heads towards the farm of Saint Gervais where it crosses the buildings while widening. It continues in the form of a dirt road which is covered with tar as it approaches the D2204. Take this route to Sospel.

Walk through the small country roads and olive trees a few minutes from the village. Cross the Lac de Breil by the Charabot Bridge, pass under the viaduct of the railway line (tag 7), take the stairs to the right and continue to the fountain. Take the stairs behind the fountain then join the road for about 500m. Arrival at the Notre Dame du Mont chapel where you can picnic in the shade of olive trees. Retrace your steps to a small road on the right, route de Ciaus, descend to the fountain then return to the village. Possibility of continuing straight on passing in front of the fountain up to the Saint Antoine de Padoue chapel, you will also see the Saint Jean bell tower just behind. And continue on the road to the transport ecomuseum and the sncf station.

The bridge over the Bévéra river has been attested on the road between Nice and the Piemont as early as the 13th century. Temporary exhibitions take place inside the Pont-Vieux. For any information, contact the tourist information office of Sospel Partly rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries, only the lower part of the pile remains from medieval age. The watchtower was inhabited and housed a shop until 1960. The two arches were destroyed by the Germans in october 1944 and then rebuilt faithfully to the original in 1951.

Built close to the Col de Brouis fort, these barracks housed the troops responsible for the artillery and operation of this structure, as well as soldiers from the outposts at cime du Bosc and Cougoule. During the fighting for the liberation of Breil-sur-Roya in April 1945, the Germans dug in and inflicted heavy losses on the Free French of the 1st DFL. Severely damaged by shells and bombs, the fort was abandoned to the army.

Wishing to pay homage to the men of the 1st DFL who died to liberate the region (cf. Fort du Col de Brouis), the municipality of Breil sur Roya erected a monument on the Col de Brouis.

Dedicated to Saint Elizabeth, the seat of the Penitent's Brotherhood of Piène-Haute, reactivated in 2015, it is located in the hamlet square and is part of the urban fabric. It is likely that its construction pre-dates its late painted decorations. The chapel of the Visitation dedicated to Saint Elizabeth, located on the hamlet square, is the headquarters of the Pénitents bancs de Piène brotherhood, which was reactivated in 2015. The building is inserted into the urban fabric and adopts the volume of the small neighboring houses. The short nave features a very small gallery and rustic side stalls. The painted decorations on the vault are late 19th-century neo-Gothic. The origins of the Pénitents blancs chapel are not known. The Monuments Historiques department dates the chapel to the 19th century, as does its decoration, but it is likely that the construction and its vocation pre-existed this late decoration. The interior design, inspired by late 19th-century neo-Gothic style, is interesting. The stalls and attributes of the penitents are still in place.

The hamlet of Piène Haute has 60 inhabitants in the winter and 150 in the summer. The ruins of the old castle testify to its age. Its name «Piène Haute» has sparked many debates during this long history. Primitively “Penna” and then “Penna Alta” (some translate «Piène Haute») it has turned into «Piena» not to confuse it with another «Penna», located in Abruzzo. The name of Piène Haute was definitively retained in 1947 when it came to France. The hamlet of Piène-Haute (600 m altitude) is relatively isolated due to its original military location (a medieval Genoese stronghold). Access by road was only created after the village became part of France. The village overlooks the Roya on a 200m-high cliff, with a very wide view of the Mercantour peaks and the sea. The village as a whole is spectacular, both for its linear layout and for the well-preserved homogeneity of its appearance. The church of Saint-Marc, a Historic Monument, features Baroque Ligurian decoration from the early 18th century. The Chapel of the White Penitents (Monuments Historiques) has preserved its neo-Gothic decor from the late 19th century. The small houses in the hamlet, like the roads, are carefully maintained and planted with flowers by the locals, who maintain a pleasant overall unity. Château de Piène-Haute (private) is a former Genoese stronghold of medieval origin (11th-17th centuries), built on a rocky ridge at the end of the hamlet, overlooking the Roya.

Built at the beginning of the 18th century, the main façade dominates a small square at the end of the hamlet. Its chevet and presbytery are founded on a sheer cliff 200 m above the Roya. A narrow rocky passage leads to the old castle, to the north.

Located at the end of the rocky ridge on which the village is located. One can see from this castle, the tower of the Cruella in Breil sur roya, the hamlet of Libre, the village of Fanghetto. Until 1815, this castle was the most advanced strategic position of the Republic of Genoa in the Roya Valley. In front of him stand the Savoiese positions of Breil on Roya, the castle of Ar Casté and the tower of the Cruella. Known as impregnable, the castle is at stake in many battles. The Breillois seized it in 1239 and kept it until 1252, when they had to return it to Genoa. The Provençals took him in 1335. He resisted several attempts by Savoie, then was abandoned in 1815 when the Republic of Genoa joined the house of Savoie-Sardinia. Abandoned for nearly a century, it gradually deteriorated. After the war it became private property and remains so to this day. Do not visit each other.

Col de Castillon. Site of two ancient villages of Castillon, with the remains of the old church. A loop allows to make the tour of the old village. Magnificent panoramic view. "Castillionum" was created in 1157 by the Consuls of Sospel to protect the Sospel people from Lombard and Saracen invasions. the Sospel people from Lombard and Saracen invasions. Castillon then became the property of the Counts of Ventimiglia, the Consul Vento de Menton before being attached to the Lord of the Consul Vento of Menton before being attached again to the Lord of Sospel. In 1348, the village became part of the Principality of Monaco then, in 1376, it was once again the property of the Lord of Sospel, then under the domination of the House of Savoy. In 1793, Castillon became French. An earthquake destroyed the village on 23 February 1887. In the 1930s, a Maginot Line fort was built under the ruins of the village of a fort of the Maginot line intended to stop the possible Italian attacks. This fort was only used for a few days in June 1940. It was nevertheless. Nevertheless, it was the target of Allied bombing raids in 1944 to repel German troops.It should be noted that the cross on the former Place Saint Joseph was stolen between the two world wars and was recently put back in place (May 2010). Rebuilt on almost the same site, below, in 1888, the village of Castillon was bombed in 1944 by the Allied fleet in order to liberate the area then occupied by German and Italian forces. As the Fort was a potential target in the years following the end of the war, the years after the end of the war, no one was allowed to resettle and the village was razed to the ground.

The whole forms a charming village which was awarded the title of most beautiful village in France in 1952.
