Les Cariamas: Discover the Gems of Chateauroux-les-alpes

The variety of new discoveries is what makes this short walk so rich. So many curiosities to be discovered with the family! From the car park, turn right. Follow the road-side and turn left towards Les Baumes. Go under the Les Eygas bridge, and then follow the path on the left heading towards Rabioux. From the path, join a track and continue past the houses. At the next crossroads at « Serre des Gayes », go right towards « Le Rabioux ». When you reach the fields lower down, follow the path leading uphill. Continue to head towards Rabioux and go past the interpretation trail ("sentier d'interprétation"). As you emerge from the forest, where the track reaches the fields turn left at the intersection. After a few metres, take the road on the right. From here, head towards Le Rabioux. Go along the road-side and then, at the Herbonne plateau, take the track on the left and carry on towards the chapel of Saint James.  Just before this, follow the path running downhill to the left towards Le Rabioux. For the return stretch, go across the Pont de Eygas.

A pretty mountain-style loop on the upper section, which can be combined with the Pinées route. Just after Châteauroux-les-Alpes town hall, turn left up rue sainte-Irénée (D663). At the cemetery, skirt it to the right, past Les Pins camp-site and continue along the main road. Go straight on at Chapelle Saint-Roch. At Les Rozans, climb the steep slope to the right, then take the less steep road to the left. At the Gérards intersection, turn right towards Route de la Serbie (DFCI G83). Once you reach the hairpin, turn left into the undergrowth to follow the official Tour de Serre-Ponçon Gravel route. Take two left turns down the less steep options. Then turn right at the edge of the wood onto the path on the right, which is carpeted with pine needles. /! Several short sections with roots and stones. After the houses, continue to the right on the less visible flat track. Above Les Barthelons, descend to the left, then take the first right onto the road. After the hamlet, turn left towards the centre of Embrun. At the bend (D465) then at the Caléyère washhouse, ascend the road to the right. Then stay on the main uphill track. At the road (marked GR) turn right then left towards Mont Guillaume forest 5km. Then turn right up the track towards the electricity pylon (you can stay on the road for a gentler slope) and turn right again. At the Porte de la Forêt car park, take the route forestière des Fontainiers opposite. At the Route forestière du Bosquet, keep right (DFCI track G82). Before the steep climb, take the path on the right towards Châteauroux 9 km. /! The descent is quite steep. Join the track under the larches and descend to the right. Stay on the main road until you reach the hairpin, then /! watch your speed. At the hairpin, return to Châteauroux along the same road on the left.

This itinerary takes you on a journey of discovery through scattered hamlets on the mountainside and beautiful Romanesque churches, while enjoying a panoramic view over the Durance valley! From the centre of the village, head north and pass over a stream. Continue on the D994h (Route d'Italie) then climb left towards Saint-Marcellin. Follow the "Coins du Monde" sign through the village. The ascent is gradual and becomes gentler as you approach the hamlet of Serre Buzard. Stay on the main road, which narrows as it runs alongside the houses and reaches a cross at a fork in the road. Now take a small track that descends to the right. The surface is not always smooth, so walk carefully down this section. Reach the Béguê fairly quickly, where the tarmac is more pleasant to ride on. Cross the hamlet of La Touisse and glide down to Fontfourane. Continue to Route d'Italie then return to Châteauroux-les-Alpes.

A mountain route with an escape along the banks of the Durance to discover the Vague du Rabioux Just after Châteauroux-les-Alpes town hall, turn left up rue sainte-Irieneé (D663). At the cemetery, skirt it to the right and head up the road to the right towards the 'Les Pins' camp-site. At Le Vazet take the hairpin road to the right, then the path straight ahead. At the road turn right towards the waterfall (DFCI G84). At the Auberge de l'Épinay road, turn right towards the Charançons gîte, Muandes car park and the Pisse waterfall. At the lookout, ascend to the left and then turn left a second time. /! At the hairpin bend, leave the track and take a path straight downhill. Ride along the canal and dismount in a few places. Then leave the canal to ascend 200 m to the right at the level of the torrent des Échirolles (steep climb) then turn left twice following the GR. Stay on the main track, then turn left onto the road when you reach the first few houses. /! Slow down on the downhill road: leave it at the hairpin on a track to the right. At the road, turn left downhill and then right through the hamlet of Les Rozans. Choose the most well-signposted options downhill as far as the road. At the D994H, ascend to the left, then after 300m descend to the right the road of Fontmoline in direction of the camp-site les Cariamas. 7200 m after the football pitch, descend to the roundabout on the right, take the 1st exit towards Briançon. After the bridge, turn right towards Les Baumes. After the railway bridge (Pont des Eygas), take the path on the left and stay on the road. At the pisciculture des écrins, turn right onto the route de la vague. At 600m, take the stony track on the left until you reach the chapel of St Jacques, then descend on the right to join the road. At the road descend to the left as far as the Vague du Rabioux and make a U-turn staying on the road Returning to the fish farm, cross the railway line and then the bridge to reach the village, staying on the road.

An excursion amidst vineyards and cultivated terraces. Take the path running left off the road leading from Châteauroux, and head towards Trinquière. At the intersection, take the path leading straight ahead and follow the Champ Mathéron mountain stream. Go along the narrow path above the fields of grapevines. Step over the Champ Mathéron mountain stream; after the bend, stay on the left-hand track. At the signpost, turn left towards Champ Mathéron and join the narrow earth path leading uphill. After a short ascent, go left towards Les Chamousses. Go into the field and follow the wall until you reach the other side of the parcel of land, then climb up along the field edge until you reach the road. Turn left down the road towards Fonfourane. A few metres after the crossroads, take the path on the right, following the GR route. When you come to the road, turn left following signs for La Trinquière. Go straight ahead, past the water fountain. After the bend and before the recycling point, take the narrow path running downhill to the right. At the intersection, turn right and back onto the track leading back to the car park.

A remnant of the Ice Age, this lake inspires tranquillity, and its reed beds are home to a host of birdlife. A lovely place to relax. At the school in Saint-André d'Embrun, turn right at the washhouse and go up the Chemin de Clotinard. At the road, turn right and then left onto the forest road (DFCI track H33). On the straight stretch, descend the path on the left and at the crow's feet intersection, take the ascend on the left. Follow a discreet path opposite and continue straight ahead (/! wetland and stones). At the water tank, descend to the right. At the bend, turn right up the road and continue straight ahead on the track to reach Lac de Siguret. At the lake, turn left twice and then right to reach a crossroads of 4 paths: continue straight down the stony path /!. Continue left along the edge of the field and forest. Take the slightly uphill road to the left. (D994D). At the entrance to the village of Siguret, descend once to the right and again at the fountain to join a path. At the end of the path, turn right then left up a small road. At the road (D994D), turn right to cross the hamlet of "La Place". Stay on this road. At the D139, turn left twice in the direction of the county town until you reach the arrival point.

Less challenging than its cousin, the Parpaillon, the ascent of the Col de Valbelle offers pleasant gravel trails in a setting that speaks for itself. At the school in Saint-André d'Embrun, at the washhouse turn right and follow the Chemin de Clotinard uphill. At the road, turn right and then left onto the forest road (DFCI track H33). Just after the fork in the road with route 55 blue, climb the track on the right at the edge of the field and forest, then the more rolling path on the left. At the crossroads of 5 tracks, take the 2nd turning on the left. /! Steep, rocky section. At the carriageway, turn right then ride for 1 km before turning left at the house. Join the Col de la Coche, staying on the Eaux Pendantes forest road. At Chalet de la Coche (fountain) turn right onto the uphill track (the least steep and clearest). Reach the Col by passing the 2 mountain restaurants and staying on the main trail. Returning to Chalet de la Coche, head down the road to the right. /! A rapid descent with steep gradients and potholes. At the exit of the municipal forest, descend the road to the right towards Saint-André then to the left at a hairpin bend on the stony path to reach the finishing point.

A gentle loop! The peaceful banks of the Durance give way to a more undulating landscape with views of the Embrunais mountains and the turquoise waters of the lake. From the church, take the road downhill to join the D994d. Then turn left towards Embrun. Drive for 4 km and, at the STOP sign, turn right and cross the Durance on a metal bridge (wooden floor) towards Embrun. Quickly, turn left and follow the route de la Digue, which is closed to vehicles. The road runs alongside the river and provides a view of Embrun's citadel. Reach a footbridge and cross back over the Durance. Follow the cycle path towards Baratier (short section under the N94) and head towards a roundabout. Take the third exit towards Les Orres (D40) and climb for 4km before reaching a fork. Now turn left onto the D39a towards Saint-Sauveur. You'll be rewarded with some beautiful views of the lake as you pedal along. Once in Saint-Sauveur, make a short stop to admire the breathtaking panorama. Continue on this balcony road for 4 km, joining the D39 at a hairpin bend. Turn left towards Saint-André-d'Embrun to return to the starting point.

Edged by the canal, close to the famous Rabioux mountain stream and the approaches to the Parc National des Écrins, this loop offers both tranquillity and freshness. From the car park, head along the track towards the waterfall (Cascade de la Pisse). Then turn right onto the path. Follow the Canal Gramorel. At the next intersection, go slightly downhill to the right and take the narrow path opposite, towards the Cascade de la Pisse. At the next intersection, go straight ahead. When you reach the « Torrent du Rabioux » continue to head towards the Cascade  de la Pisse.  Cross the Les Muandes footbridge and rejoin the track. Then go left to the Les Muandes car park. Head down the path on the right to reach the waterfall. At the waterfall, return along the same track back to the intersection at the footbridge. Here, turn left onto the forest track. A few metres further up, turn right at « Le vieux Chemin » towards Les Pinées via Pont de la Serre. Carry straight on towards Les Pinées. You go past chalets and streams. At the next « La Serre » intersection turn right downhill towards Les Pinées. On the road, you pass the Jean Blanc spring and the bridge. After the bend, turn right onto the path leading uphill towards Les Pinées. Then rejoin the outward path: turn left towards Les Pinées

Fenced in by mountains, this circuit takes you through a bucolic environment to the lake and the chapel. From the car park, go left onto the track leading to the « chemin du Lauzerot » sign.  Then take the uphill track on the right following the "Chemin du Lauzerot". Keep left on the narrow track which runs along the edge of the fields and continues uphill along the forest edge. At the next intersection, near the field, take the track on the left. After a few hundred metres, turn right and continue down the hairpin bend. When you come to a ruined house, turn left at the intersection. Follow the path and when you reach the intersection among the fields, turn right. Follow the track until you come to another intersection. Then turn left. Stay on this track and go past the bend. After the bend, turn right onto the path running downhill to the lake. Pass the area of small boulders and the stream and continue straight ahead after the bench. Take the next track on the left which leads to the chapel of St-Roch. Go past the chapel and continue straight ahead on the track which leads down to the road. Turn right onto the road which brings you back to the car park.

From the refuge, there is a wide range of climbs and hikes: Sirac, Col and Pic de Vallonpierre, Col des Chevrettes, GR 54 footpath, Chabournéou refuge, Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... A stopover for mountaineers and hikers: a mountain road to the Refuge des Souffles. Shared room and kitchen upstairs, running water and fountain. Meals by reservation. Set at the bottom of the Vénéon valley, it offers panoramic views of the Pilatte glacier and the most prestigious peaks in the Écrins. TEMPORARILY CLOSED The Temple Ecrins refuge was completely renovated in 2018. It offers 48 beds, made up of modules for 1 to 3 people and equipped with comforters. The large window in the dining room offers a breathtaking view of the typical Oisans alpine landscape. The honey bee is also known as the mouche à miel, or honey fly. It lives in colonies formed by a complex structure of social castes. There is a queen and workers which collect pollen on the hairy receptacles located on the back of their hind legs, forming a sort of pollen «basket». It is through this work that the honey bee is able to make honey, which is its food. Vital for plant pollination, the bee is capable of visiting up to 250 flowers in one hour.

This plateau is representative of glaciofluvial terraces. They form a tabular promontory, bounded by vertical walls formed in the cemented glaciofluvial materials, at the foot of which the Le Rabioux mountain stream flows on one side and the Durance on the other. This glacial rock is a typical formation of the Haute-Durance valley, similar to the Roc d'Embrun or that of Mont-Dauphine. Its formation dates back to one of the last ice ages (100,000 years ago). At that time, the Durance glacier occupied the entire valley. Today, on its sedimentary rock base, the Roc is covered by vegetation which is highly characteristic of steppe grasslands.

Clinging firmly to the rock wall, this grey-green tree with a twisted trunk defies the laws of gravity. It can withstand hot sun, wind and very low winter temperatures. It gives off a pleasant scent due to the oil contained in its small scaly leaves.

On the other side of the Durance, the view from left to right takes in the Pic du Clocher, the Pic St-André, Mont Orel, Le Pouzence and Le Morgon, among others, and, below, the village of Châteauroux. The mountains above are Mont Guillaume, L'Hivernet, Soleil Boeuf and the Le Rabioux valley with the Col des Tourettes, although only one of its two tourettes (small towers) is visible.

The savin juniper, a dark matte green shrub with a spreading growth habit, is covered not with spines but with smooth, fleshy scales. Do not pack its berries because although they resemble those of the common juniper, they are poisonous and can cause haemorrhages.

The red kite is a medium-sized bird of prey with a wingspan of up to 1.6 metres. In flight, the red kite can easily be recognised by its slender silhouette and its deeply forked tail. It has contrasting russet-brown and white plumage. Its diet is a relatively eclectic, made up of rodents, reptiles and invertebrates. It is also a willing scavenger. It is for this reason that red kites can sometimes be seen in large number near landfill sites, and often in the company of black kites.

This endangered species can reach 1 metre in height. Its enormous clusters of yellow and brown flowers can be seen during its flowering period, April to June. If the plant has been grazed or mown, there may be a second very late flowering on the remaining plant in September. In the Alps, there a various habitats favourable to the species, which colonises wide open areas in particular.

This vintage farm implement was horse-drawn. The farmer sat on the iron seat. Its teeth form a kind of rake and its purpose was to pile up the hay in rows (known as windrows).

This small chapel stands on a rocky plateau overlooking the confluence of the rivers Durance and Rabioux. It was constructed with pebbles from the Durance and is roofed with stone slabs. « It must once have served as a waypoint for pilgrims from Italy making their way to Santiago de Compostella. They would take shelter here, pause for a while and gather their strength for the rest of their journey. Today, this chapel is no longer used for religious celebrations.» Monique MAYNé

A large number of hikes leave from the refuge: Cascade de la Pisse (20 mins), Col de la Vénasque (3h), Col de Côte Longue (4h), the summit of Le Vieux Chaillol (3163 m), but also the unspoilt valleys of the Muande and Mal Cros! A little paradise only a 1 hr 30 min walk away! Elevation 345 metres.

You will be welcomed in a typical mountain farm. Calm and authenticity guaranteed. The meals are shared with your hosts and prepared with products from the farm or from Queyras. Starting point for several hikes such as Le Grand Rochebrune, Lac de Souliers, Lac de Roue.

Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

After 1 hour and forty-five minutes walking, you will come across the charming mountain refuge that is at an altitude of 2000 m. It is guarded in spring and is the starting point for ski touring routes such as the Jocelme or the Brèche en V. In the summer, backing onto the Sirac, it is at the limit between hiking and mountaineering: a first-rate location. You might be lucky enough to spot chamois that loiter on the neighbouring slopes at the end of the day, as the sun takes its time to leave.

To enter this house of character is to find the atmosphere of a real "fuste" (traditional house of Saint Véran). To be welcomed by Félicie and François' kind smile is already the promise of a successful stay! To find yourself, to relax, to appreciate the know-how and to take full advantage of the Queyras. The rooms, all different, are distributed in this old fuste (traditional habitat of Saint Véran) from the second floor to the roofs. All renovated, they have their own charm with a view on the surrounding mountain. From the attic room to the room with balcony, they offer elegant and functional comfort in a warm atmosphere. They are all equipped with private bathrooms. The rooms can accommodate from 1 to 6 people. Bed linen and towels are provided. The hosts did not wish to equip the rooms with television or wifi for more conviviality within the house. However, a TV room and a wifi area are available in the living rooms. With family or friends, the living rooms allow you to relax in an authentic setting, by the fire, between stones and old larch. Every evening, we prepare delicious dishes mainly made from local and organic products. They will be served in a restaurant room fitted out in the old sheepfold of the house with the still intact Italian vaults. Don't forget to take your bathing suit to enjoy the sauna!
