Discover Camping Le Grand Morgan at Savines-le-lac

A world apart is waiting to be discovered in the shadows of the forest. Travel through it to discover the riches it has to offer. From the car park, take the track opposite which leads into the forest. After a few metres, take the path on the left. At the next intersection, head right towards Pierre Arnoux. At the next intersection, go straight ahead. Turn left onto the forest road ("La route forestière") and a few metres further down, take the path on the right (1). Follow the GRP (regional long-distance trail) route and then at the next intersection take the track on the right. You return to the forest track and turn right. A short distance further up, take the path on the left. Continue through the forest and when you come to the track again, go right and then take the path opposite (there-and-back walk to the spring). When you come to the top of the clearing, you have reached Pierre Arnoux. Make a there-and-back detour to the belvedere by going to the left of the mountain refuge. Back at the refuge, go along the silver birch walk to return to the car park. Then, turn left at the place called « l'Empouyère » (2)When you come to the spring, take the downhill track on the left (3). At the forested track in the forest of the district of Savines-le-Lac, cross the track and continue straight ahead. Cross the track again and go straight ahead. At the next intersection, when you come to the fitness trail amenities, turn right. (4) Then take the wooden walkway on the left. Go past the water storage facility and the aqueduct. Immediately after this, take the path on the left which follows the water course. When you reach the Savines-le-Lac road, go left. Follow the path that runs along the right-hand side of the road for 1 kilometre, which brings you back to the car park.

Discover a whole new world in the shade beneath the forest. Cross it to discover the treasures of this place with its breathtaking views over Lake Serre-Ponçon. 1. Take the path along the right-hand side of the road for 1km until you reach the entrance to the camp-site. From the car park, turn left onto the forest path. A few metres further on, take the path on the left, then turn right at the next crossroads. Go straight on at the next intersection.2. On the forest road, turn left and a few metres further down take the path on the right. Follow the GRP then take the right-hand path at the next junction. Back on the forest track, turn right. A little further up, take the left-hand path. Continue through the forest until you return to the track, go right then take the path opposite.3. Once you reach the top of the clearing, you're in Pierre Arnoux. Take the left-hand path from the hut to the lookout and back. Back at the hut, take the outward path through the silver birch until you reach the car park. Then turn left at "l'Empouyère".4. When you reach the spring, take the left-hand path downhill. Go straight across the forest track twice. Turn right at the fitness trail, then left through the undergrowth. From here, follow the Barnnafret stream back to Savines-le-lac and the start.

An unmissable viewpoint over Lake Serre-Ponçon : The lookout of Pierre Arnoux. From the Relais Fleuri ice cream parlour, head up the street opposite (rue du Morgon). At the torrent du Barnafret, continue straight ahead on the road (D468T). At the DFCI post, leave the road and climb the track to the right (DFCI H1). Stay on the main track. At the Pierre Arnoux sign, continue up the main track. Leave the picnic area on the right and continue straight ahead. At the intersection after the car park, turn left. Stay on the main track. At the Fontaine d'Aubers picnic area, take the main track on the left. At the Charbonnières picnic area, turn left and continue straight ahead on the main track. After the bridge, keep left and join the road back down to Savines-le-Lac. Stay on rue du Morgon until you get back to the ice cream parlour and maybe treat yourself a well-deserved sweet treat?

A short but demanding loop winding through the pine trees overlooking Lac de Serre-Ponçon. Take a small street uphill from the car park. Turn left 100m further up and continue along the small tarmac road. This one heads deep into the woods. First leave the paths to the right or left to take the route de Serre-Verger, then take the wide track on the left. Continue straight on at the next intersection. At the next junction with a panoramic view of the lake, follow Boscodon to the right. Continue to the ruins of Villard Robert. From there, take the route de la Blache. 700m further on, turn right to follow the Clot Charron forest road. Continue along this road for around 1.5 km before taking a small path to the right. Once you reach a flat spot with a picnic table, continue your descent by turning right. At this point, rejoin the forest track taken on the outward journey in the opposite direction. After 600m on this track, turn right onto a single-track road with tight bends through the pines. This technical descent stretches for 1km before rejoining the Nationale 94. Turn left onto the N94 and left again in front of the first few shops. Then turn right through the centre of Savines and straight on at the roundabout to rejoin the small road taken at the beginning and the starting point.

Sport is on the cards! A real "Best Of", this loop is everything that fans of physical and sporting challenges are looking for in a nutshell. From Savines-le-Lac, head towards the bridge over the Durance. Once on the other side of the river, follow the signs for Saint-Apollinaire, the destination of this first 7km climb. This route has its own unmistakable ambience. Take a short break at the lookout before heading back towards Chorges. Enjoy the descent and, finally, in the centre of Chorges, opposite a "no-entry" sign, turn right towards Gap (Chemin du Moulin). Pass two roundabouts in quick succession and a car park, then turn left and follow this small road for 5 km until you reach the hamlet of Les Carles. Continue straight ahead until you come to a crossroads, then turn left onto the "Route des Borels". Descend to the village of La Bâtie-Neuve and skirt the police station to head towards La Bâtie-Vieille. Cross a railway line and then cross the N94 very carefully. Continue on the D11 then head towards Tallard. It descends as far as the D942. Turn right, still towards Tallard, following the Avance for 4 km. Then take a right fork towards Notre-Dame-du-Laus and continue towards the Col du Tourrond. Take a series of bends before reaching the summit, then descend to Jarjayes. Continue for a short distance and join the D942, opposite a tennis court. Turn right and this time reach the D900b at a carpenters’ workshop. Go left for 300 m, then right down towards Piégut. Cross the Durance and, at the next crossroads, turn left towards Piégut. Stay on this pleasant road (D704) before leaving it and taking the one heading towards Rochebrune. Cross the plain while travelling alongside the Durance (and a leisure centre). Go past Rochebrune and, at the crossroads, turn right for 200 m. Now take a left fork and follow the Durance EDF canal. Pass Gréoliers until you reach a departmental road. Then turn right and follow the signs for Barcelonnette (D900b) for almost 20 km. This road climbs upwards and at certain points offers great views over the Durance. Further on, the landscape becomes even more open, with panoramic views of Lake Serre-Ponçon, the Ubaye and its mountainous terrain. After a lookout point, you have just 5 km to go before turning left towards Savines (D954). Continue down to the valley and cross the Ubaye river. Continue along a pleasant lakeside road, go through a tunnel and then, shortly after a church and its cemetery, turn right and climb towards Pontis (D7). A fine 5.3 km climb awaits you, with an average gradient of 9%. At the pass, enjoy a well-deserved break and a beautiful panorama of Lake Serre-Ponçon and the surrounding mountains. Then head back down towards Pontis, through a beautiful forest and rejoin the D954. Finally, return to Savines-le-Lac and take in all the beautiful views.

The route crosses the forest then the mountain pastures, leading to Pic de Morgon, from where the view over the two parts of the Serre-Ponçon lake is truly striking.From the Pierre Arnoux car park (1285 m), head for the Fontaine des Miracles track. Turn left into the track and go as far as the beginning of the path with some log steps. Follow the path right across the forest, then, after a few bends, climb up the ladders on a small rocky bar. Continue along the winding path and you pass a source just before arriving at the gates of Morgon. Once in the corrie, follow the track, then the path. You arrive near a shepherd’s cabin, respecting the peace and quiet, before tackling the ascent, which is often eroded in the cargneule rock. Don’t cut across the loops, which worsens the erosion. If you veer to the right you will pass a metal cylinder placed on the crest in the year 2000 at the same time as another that can still be seen on Mont Orel. Go up to the summit across the flat area below it. On the way back, follow the same route in the other direction. You can also follow the crest southwards towards Tête de la Vieille (short passage through the rock) to arrive at a path going down to the corrie and passing near Lake Morgon and the Saint Pierre sanctuary.

Between the rivers Durance and Ubaye to the foot of the Pic du Morgon, with a detour to the Cabane du Jas, this loop makes for a tranquil walk with plenty to discover. From the car park, turn right and follow the track . At the next intersection, carry straight on and stay on the left-hand track through the forest of larch, black pine and Scots pine. At the picnic table, turn left and take the narrow path leading up through the forest. Stay on the left-hand path until you reach the summit: panoramic view of the territory of Serre-Ponçon. Follow the ridge and take the path on the left which brings you back to the picnic table. From here, take the north-facing ("Ubac") path, turning left, until you come to the Cabane du Jas, where freshness and shade await you. After a stop, continue straight ahead. Follow the ridge down until you reach the pass. Turn left just before the Crête de la Coquille (which can be reached with an extra 20 minutes' walk) which brings you back to the car park.

This hike enables you to discover the enchanting cirque at altitude and the panorama of the valleys of Ubaye and the Durance. From the car park at Grand Clot (1660 m) follow the track into the forest until Portes de Morgon where you will discover the cirque of the same name. Once in the cirque, follow the path then the track. Pass near to the shepherd’s cabin respecting its tranquility before attacking the ascent which is often eroded in the cargneules. Follow the track in order to avoid making the erosion worse. Ascend to the summit (where there is an old orientation table that has been struck by lightning). It is possible by turning right to pass near to a metal  cylinder placed on the ridge in the year 2000 at the same time as the one you can still see at Mont Orel. A third cylinder was put up on Mont Guillaume, but has been dismantled. Next rejoin the summit by following the shoulder of the mountain... From up high, the view of the two branches of Serre-Ponçon lake is stunning. For the return journey follow the ridge to the South in the direction of the Tête de la Vieille (a small passage through the rocks) and get back on to the  path that goes down to the  cirque. It passes near to Morgon Lake and the Saint Pierre sanctuary before joining the Portes de Morgon itinerary that you followed on the way out... 

This wild trail along a lakeshore path offers new perspectives. The showstopper is at the Chanteloube viaduct. From the car park, head down the road towards Chanteloube via Serre de l'Aigle. At « la plage des pommiers » take the track on the right at the gate. After a few metres, take the path leading uphill to the right, towards Chanteloube. At the next intersection (« sous les Curattes ») head towards the beach of Trémouilles and Chanteloube via the lakeshore ("Plage de Trémouilles", "Chanteloube par littoral"). Then, carry on in this direction until you come to « Pra de l'As » and turn left. You emerge from the forest and when you come to the beach take the path on the right. At the next intersection, turn left. When you come to the beach, go past the car park and follow the road to the Pont de Chanteloube, for a there-and-back detour. After going past the viaduct, carry on along the path to reach the road. After a few metres, go under the bridge and join the road left towards the Chapelle St-Jacques a few hundred metres further up.

This trail leads primarily through wild environments: Lake, combes, forests, grasslands... all making up the many and varied environments of Serre-Ponçon. From the car park, stay on the road and turn right. At «Mas des Bâtardes», take the track on the left towards Les Curattes. Follow the track running along the field edges and the railway line. At the «les Mareisson» crossroads, go straight on towards Les Curattes. Just opposite, take the track on the right leading into the forest. When you reach the track in Le Gorny, turn left and carry on past the abandoned farm. At the next intersection, make a 800-metre there-and-back detour to the orientation table. Then return to the intersection and head in the direction of Chanteloube. At Chanteloube, take the path on the left towards the Baie St-Michel. Carry on for several kilometres, passing the «le Serre de l'aigle», «les Curattes», «Pra de l'ase», «sous les Curattes» and finally «Rougon». At the first dwellings, take the rightmost path. When you reach the track, turn left and back onto the road. At «La plage des Pommiers» (apple tree beach), head up the road towards La Couche and back to the car park after the memorial.

Built at the sources of the White Drac, near the disused Champoléon cabin, this refuge with its stone roof offers tasty regional food at lunchtime and copious Alpine meals in the evening. Nestled at the foot of the west face of the Sirac, this refuge was built in 2001 from wood and stone. Bright, spacious dormitories with duvets. Hot water showers and indoor toilets. From the refuge, there is a wide range of climbs and hikes: Sirac, Col and Pic de Vallonpierre, Col des Chevrettes, GR 54 footpath, Chabournéou refuge, Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Accessible in 2 hrs 30 mins from Gioberney car park, elevation 700 metres.

Chabournéou unveils a world of mountains and glaciers. This former refuge with its authentic atmosphere provides a fine alternative on the Vieux Chaillol Tour or GR54 footpath. Meals available all day. No picnic room. An authentic refuge in an Alpine setting at the foot of the north face of the Sirac. Easy to access along a path with the evocative name of "the minister's path", the refuge welcomes visitors for the skiing season in spring and for climbing and hiking during the summer. Access in 2 hrs 30 min from the Gioberney car park; 450-metre incline.

Access in 15 minutes from Le Rif du Sap.

Perched on an Alpine prairie, at the frontier with the high mountains, the Olan refuge provides a unique panorama on La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the prestigious Olan cirque, the Cime du Vallon... A stopover for mountaineers and hikers: a mountain road to the Refuge des Souffles. Shared room and kitchen upstairs, running water and fountain. Meals by reservation. Access from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar in 4 hours; elevation: 1245 metres.

The ascent to the refuge from Villard Loubière has become a great hiking classic. Small dormitories with duvets, convivial dining room, hot showers and large equipped terraces. A stop on the GR54 footpath that should not be missed. Ideal starting point for the Pic de Turbat, with 3000m of easy access. A stop on the Tour de l'Oisans (GR54 footpath) that should not be missed. Snacks and refreshments possible. Access in 3 hours; elevation: 900 metres.

Very common in wooded areas. It can be around 55 cm long with a wingspan of 1.30 m. This bird of prey feeds mainly by hunting, allowing it to catch small mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The breeding season begins in February. The female lays around 3 or 4 eggs. In the brooding period, the male feeds the female and replaces her when she is absent.

To thrive, it needs a moist atmosphere and well-drained soil. It can grow up to 40 m in height. Beech is distinguished by its smooth, grey trunk. Its branches are horizontal and its oval leaves have wavy edges with cilia. The pyramid-shaped fruits, known as beechnuts, are contained in a spiky husk that opens in early autumn. Beech is also commonly known as "fayard".

This is a beautiful tree that can reach 15 m in height. Its leaves can be identified by the white tomentose down on the underside. Its white flowers are grouped together in an inflorescence and bud fruit called "alises", which appear at the end of summer. This species likes a lot of light and tolerates dry conditions well. It can be found in open woods and on sunny, even rocky, dry slopes in the mountains..

This tree can grow up to 25 m tall and is recognisable due to its white bark, warty twigs and weeping aspect (drooping twigs). In the Champsaur, birch sap is extracted using the Canadian method to make a drink rich in sugars and trace elements. Used by mankind for centuries, especially in Nordic countries, it was once considered a miraculous tree thanks to its host of medicinal and food uses.

This very specific geological form always attracts the curious. You can get up close and admire their distinctive shapes, right in the middle of the forest. Their appearance can be explained by an accumulation of limestone in the stream water, which is highly concentrated. This settles and petrifies various elements such as moss and twigs.

It is sometimes possible to see the Rock Ptarmigan on the ridges of the shale slopes which, after having picked their way through the rocks, fly away in a flash of white. It is one of the most threatened species in the Alps... With global warming, evolution in the pastures, winter frequentation ... the future seems uncertain for this inhabitant of the ridges...

The Pic de Morgon is used by the vultures coming from the right bank of the Durance, sometimes in large numbers, to get up to altitude after having crossed over Serre-Ponçon Lake. Scavengers exclusively , these gravediggers who have frightened and disgusted mankind for a long time hold a fundamental place in the food cycle by rapidly eliminating cadavers and in this way limiting the dispersal of microbes and illness.

The summit of the Pic de Morgon offers a magnificent view over the Ubaye and the Durance. While on the right bank of the latter, one can see the Aiguilles de Chabrières, the Piolit and the Mont Guillaume, on the left bank of the Ubaye, you can see the Dormillouse. Near to the Pic de Morgon, is the Tête de la Vieille, le Pic de Charance and the Pic Jean Martin. In the distance, you can distinguish the Pic de Bure as well as the snowy summits of the Ecrins and the Vanoise.

In Provencal, jas means gîte. This term is used to describe the large traditional sheepbarns built far away from the farms and hamlets, near to the grazing areas. Generally of dry stone construction, these heritage features bear witness to a pastoral lifestyle which can be difficult to imagine now, because vegetation has taken over and the location seems so isolated and difficult to reach.

The refuge is located on one of the Tour du Vieux Chaillol paths. A large number of hikes leave from the refuge: Cascade de la Pisse (20 mins), Col de la Vénasque (3h), Col de Côte Longue (4h), the summit of Le Vieux Chaillol (3163 m), but also the unspoilt valleys of the Muande and Mal Cros! A little paradise only a 1 hr 30 min walk away! Elevation 345 metres.

Built at the sources of the White Drac, near the disused Champoléon cabin, this refuge with its stone roof offers tasty regional food at lunchtime and copious Alpine meals in the evening. The refuge is easy to access for families: 1 hr 30 mins from the Auberts car park (elevation: 350 m). Large number of hiking trails leaving from the refuge.

The pastoral cabin at Champoléon was built by stockbreeders in 1921. It was in 1972 that the cabin was restored for the first time... Two years later, the French Alpine Club (CAF) took over its management in order to insure shelter for the increasing number of hikers of the GR54. Having become too cramped, the refuge was rebuilt in 1979 on the ruins of the hamlet and became the Chaumette Meadow. The decorative stones were cut on site at  Champoléon. The imposing Lauzes stones used to cover the roof underline the effort made to integrate with the landscape. Today flocks of sheep are brought up to the mountains at the end of June and are visited once a week.

Near Gap and Digne, close to Seyne and the ski resorts of Chabanon and Montclar and the mountain resorts of Le Grand Puy and Le Fanget. The village of Verdaches will charm you. Hiking and snowshoeing, mountain biking, paragliding, geological and fossils discovery, Land’Art, swim in Lake Serre-Ponçon and in rivers, mountain activities vary throughout the seasons.

Mountain refuge located at the source of the Bléone river, at an altitude of 2,050 m in the village of Prads-Haute-Bléone. Accessible only on foot (3h walk). Numerous hikes available, including the Tête de l'Estrop at 2961m of altitude, as well as sport fishing, bouldering and slacklining. Accommodation and catering available by prior arrangement. Catering only at lunchtime. No reservations in July and August.

However, it was a victim of its own success and in 2000 the decision was made to build a second, bigger one. It can accommodate 37 instead of 22. This new building was the first modern mountain refuge to be built using stones on site rather than imported materials. It copies the simplicity and the crow-stepped gable from the "small refuge" which has been kept as lodgings for a warden's helper.

Nestled at the foot of the west face of the Sirac, this refuge was built in 2001 from wood and stone. Bright, spacious dormitories with duvets. Hot water showers and indoor toilets. From the refuge, there is a wide range of climbs and hikes: Sirac, Col and Pic de Vallonpierre, Col des Chevrettes, GR 54 footpath, Chabournéou refuge, Tour du Vieux Chaillol. Accessible in 2 hrs 30 mins from Gioberney car park, elevation 700 metres.

After 1 hour and forty-five minutes walking, you will come across the charming mountain refuge that is at an altitude of 2000 m. It is guarded in spring and is the starting point for ski touring routes such as the Jocelme or the Brèche en V. In the summer, backing onto the Sirac, it is at the limit between hiking and mountaineering: a first-rate location. You might be lucky enough to spot chamois that loiter on the neighbouring slopes at the end of the day, as the sun takes its time to leave.
