Fouvent-saint-andoche: Hidden Gems of Haute-Saône

With the spa town of the Vosges in your rear view, you continue your picturesque cycling adventure between the Vosges canal and the Coney valley. This stage of the Voie Bleue passes through the Vosges forest, populated by spruce, beech and maple trees. Once in the Haute-Saône, the green ribbon of the canal will allow you to discover the atypical manual swing bridge at Selles, which allows the waterway to be cleared for boats. The route is easy to follow along the towpath of the Canal des Vosges. For a quick and panoramic discovery of the resort of Bains Les Bains, this short forestry trail, just a stone's throw from the centre and with a steep slope, allows the discovery of the Million hill overlooking the spa. At the Grands Prés, a beautiful restored house, then traditional charri farms mark out this route with a slight difference in level. Nice view over the highest point of Le Noirmont.

The Lombard Tower is the last trace of the fortifications erected in the 14th century when the town was connected to the House of Burgundy. Also known as the “Tour du Poids”, it was used for administrative purposes during the economic boom of the town during the Renaissance. To discover: 2 traditional vaulted artillery rooms with three gun ports and a beautiful Guard Room on the 3rd level. Tours every third Monday from mid-March to mid-November with the Tourist Information Office of Bains-Les-Bains. Occasional tours by the “Amis du Vieux Fontenoy” association in summer and during the Heritage Days in September.

Built during a prosperous period, this church is in the flamboyant Gothic style of the 15th century. Built by the Burgundian Sires on the remains of a Romanesque building, of which some traces remain (pools), it has a beautiful overall harmony. The unique choir has an altar made of a massive buhr mill, cut from local sandstone. On top of it are anthropomorphic keystones with the effigy of the Lords of Neuchâtel. The sculpted stone pulpit, the baptismal font and the south portal are fine examples of Renaissance architecture. The association « Les amis du Vieux Fontenoy » organise a party to celebrate these 40 years. Around one of the oldest Dungeon of Lorraine many activities will be proposed. On the programme : conferences of the Middle Age, visit of the castle ruin, demonstration of arts and crafts, open air cinema, … You will find food service on the spot.

Immerse yourself in a moment of history that pays tribute to the work of hundreds of women who, in their modest homes, worked hard to dress the international high society. Let yourself be guided to the room where the men worked in the forges and wire-drawing mills of the area. You will find our Museum of Embroidery, Metalwork and Heritage in the heart of the village of Fontenoy-le-Château, which has about 600 inhabitants. The Museum brings back to life the period of 1850-1975, when the embroidery of Fontenoy was a worldwide success. Don't hesitate to enter the museum! As you walk through it, you will see unique pieces made by women who used to embroider up to 15 hours a day in their kitchens for the crowned heads of the world. Put yourself in their shoes: embroidering underpants for the Shah of Iran, a blouse for the Queen of England, without knowing what they will look like when finished, or even a tablecloth for the Elysée or the Crillon Hotel without ever knowing how luxurious they will be? Don't forget to take a break in the room dedicated to metalworking to discover the work of the men of La Pipée or Moulin Cotant who made nails and cutlery, and often carried out the household tasks that their wives could not do because they were so busy with embroidery. Finally, emblematic figures of this village: Gilbert, the poet, and Julie Victoire Daubié, the first female to get a baccalaureate in France, will tell you their story. In the “Museum of glass, iron, wood and the Resistance”, there are countless glass objects, tools, models and photographs illustrating the expertise of the people of the forest over the last five centuries. One room focusses on the French Resistance (1943-44); another highlights the famous glassmaker François-Théodore Legras. In summer 2010, there will be a temporary exhibition entitled, “The Gallo-Romans in Saône Lorraine”.

Making a fire, producing pottery and prehistoric jewellery - Entertainment for all, including games with light and films projected in unusual surroundings, and a Stone Age park with reconstructions showing the tools, houses and techniques of prehistoric times. Between forest, canal and river, the Manufacture Royale of Bains is alongside the walking and cycling path. The manufacture Royale was the most important tinware factory in the Kingdom in the 18th century, with an industry born from wood and water? It is one of the best preserved French industrial sites of the 18th century. The history of this industrial site is fabulous. Baron Falatieu, who brought the Manufacture Royale to a peak, left his mark here. Other personalities did the same: Julie Victoire Daubié, the first French baccalaureate female holder, who was born in the Maison du Caissier in 1824, Cavour, the leader of the Italian unification movement, who stayed there in 1839, and the politician Jules Méline. A visit to the park with its century-old trees allows you to discover the dwarf beech, Unesco's tree of the year in 2011, and the rare species that bear witness to the domain’s rich industrial past (Ginko Biloba, Catalpa, Tulip tree). In the charcoal hall, which was used to store charcoal, you can discover the exhibitions that retrace the history of the tinware factory, thanks to the research of Chantal Starck, Remi Ritter, and Anny Thouvenin with the Departmental Archives... The Manufacture Royale has received many awards for the beauty of its park and terraced gardens, and for its chapel and its stained glass windows, made by Nathalie Noirjean and restored with the help of donors and the Fondation du Patrimoine. One of the oldest paternalist industrial sites in Lorraine, turned since then into dwellings, guest houses, gites and rooms in the castle which tell, like the guided tours, this timeless story. Guided tours of the industrial site, its park and its chapel take place on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month from April to October, upon prior registration at the tourist information office. Groups on reservation. Activities, concerts and exhibitions are offered in June, July and September. The site remains open and accessible all year round, and an exhibition is offered free of charge.

Free tour of the House of Julie Victoire Daubié in the Manufacture Royale of Bains-les-Bains. In her residence “Maison des Illustres” which is open to visitors, you will discover her reconstructed library, with extracts from her works from original documents entrusted by the BMI of Epinal. A tour in a refined setting that brings to life the era of Julie Victoire.

Neo-Gothic chapel from 1861 and former important place of pilgrimage. Here, people pray to the Virgin to heal the sick. The inside is papered with votive offerings. The stained glass windows recall the legend that a statue of the Virgin Mary, originally placed in the hollow of an oak tree in the middle of the “brosse” (brush), mysteriously moved to the church in Bains. In the park surrounding the chapel there is still a mission cross from 1886 and a memorial honouring the parish priest Bernardin, who was responsible for the creation of the chapel. On the back of the tympanum of the entrance, an engraved text reminds us of this.

The marina of Fontenoy-le-Château is along the Vosges canal. A few kilometres away, discover the city of Bains-les-Bains and the Manufacture Royale, one of the most beautiful industrials of the 18th century. In Fontenoy-le-Château, go and discover this medieval, typical village and admire the ruins of its castle. In the centre of the village, you will find a museum of embroidery and metalworking.

Nature and fishing gite, for up to 15 people, suited for cyclists and motorcyclists. Built in the stone workshop, on the ground floor with direct access to the garden, fishing shed and parking, the Nature Gite was made for groups. Fitted kitchen, launderette, 7 bedrooms with bathrooms/toilets, big lounge room with bar, furnace, ovens, barbecues … TV/WiFi room, table tennis room (bikes are furnished, pool, fishing in river …).
