The Tour de France stopped off in Méribel in 1973. Kilometre posts have been installed for cyclists. Contact the tourist office for details. When the Tour de France visited Méribel-Mottaret in 1973, the resort had just seen the light of day.

The road ends at the altiport, at an altitude of over 2000 m. Kilometre posts and a timing system have been installed so cyclists can time their ascent. Courchevel has hosted the Tour de France on three occasions.

Discover the historic center of Moûtiers: its pedestrian street and its shops, the medieval streets, the squares, the old bridge, the old archbishop's palace, the cathedral ... The old bridge or Saint-Pierre bridge built in 1785 and classified as a Historic Monument since 1980. It is the oldest bridge in the city. It already existed in Roman times. Very often rebuilt due to the heavy floods of Isère in the 18th century in particular. Below, you will see a passage called barrioz that the washerwomen used to do their laundry. These barrioz were closed in the evening by barriers (hence their name) in order to avoid unwanted intrusions into the city from the banks. This circuit will reveal many other curiosities linked to the history of the city. For the little story : Moûtiers, known as Darantasia in the Roman era, was the historical capital of the Tarentaise (IIès). At the crossroads of the Valleys and located on the old Roman road linking Milan to Vienna (38), the town was often frequented by pilgrims on their way to visit the tombs of the apostles in Rome, as well as by merchants and soldiers. Home to what is now a thousand-year-old cathedral, Moûtiers had a bishop right from the 5th century, when the bishops became archbishops before being awarded the honorific title of ‘Comte de Tarentaise’in the Middle Ages. A major religious centre, the town’s name doubtless comes from“Monsaterium”: the word for the collected spaces of the cathedral, archbishop’s palace and cloisters. A pretty high altitude lake at 2254 metres, close to the Col de la Loze, offering a beautiful panorama over two valleys. You'll find rainbow trout here. Accessible on foot or by bike. Located at 1040 meters, la Thuile is a small traditional village with its tight streets and houses constructed in the slope, when you can find the Notre Dame de la Visitation de la Sainte Vierge chapel, a traditional oven and a water container. The village’s festival is celebrated on the first weekend of July.

Notre-Dame-de-la-Visitation Chapel is situated in la Thuile hamlet in Montagny village (Savoy). It was already built before the pastoral visit in 1633 under the name of Notre-Dame-des-Grâces. You can observe the Baroque art in its altarpiece: colorful, gilded, with chubby cherubs and unfinished cornice. The painting features Saint Etienne, Saint Marguerite of Antioche, Saint Roch and Saint Sébastien looking piously at the Visitation scene. You can see a little wooden statue of the Virgin and Child covered in gold leaf. The bell tower with its 40cm hole diameter bell is on the top of the southern front. It has the effigies of the Virgin crossing her arms on her chest and Christ on the cross . It was melted in 1895 as the one from Villard Chapel by Georges and Francisque Paccard, famous smelters in Annecy-le-Vieux. The present Way of the Cross was built by the priest, Charles Maurice Emprin with all the villagers gathered for the ceremony. After the blessing some paintings and crosses were carried in procession all around the village !

Typical of late 19th-century architecture, the building is topped by a hipped roof and boasts a sturdy pegged wooden framework testifying to the fine reputation of La Perrière’s carpenters. Its painted trompe-l’oeil corner decorations are still intact.Until 1952, the school had a classroom that could accommodate up to 35 pupils. It was an itinerant facility as the hamlet’s inhabitants moved house according to season. From the hamlet below to the one in the middle, and then higher up to Villarnard, and then down again following the same pattern in reverse. The schoolmistress started the school year on the 1 October, closing the school two weeks later when the children’s families had to make their way down to Champétel for the harvesting and apple-picking season, emptying Villarnard of its population. She then opened up Vignotan’s school. With the coming of winter, all the families made their way back up to Villarnard as the hamlet’s barns stored the hay used to feed their cattle.They stayed there until spring, when then the schoolmistress again closed the school so as to enable the families to go and work in the valley’s fields and plant their crops before returning to Villarnard later with their livestock. Although it was an itinerant school, the mistress always taught the same pupils. In the summer, as she had rather fewer pupils in her class every day, she packed her knapsack with books and went up to the pastures of Le Bouc Blanc with the animals. So it was that she followed her pupils as their families moved from one spot to another, and, high up in the mountains, taught them the names of their peaks and read them stories.

It was built in the 16th century and still contains its original walnut communion rail and collection chest, along with a recently restored painting of agrarian saints.
