Circuit la queue du renard XT n°13

Thanks to the FFRandonnée and the village of Xertigny for the creation of this hike and for the work done by its teams throughout the year to mark out and maintain these paths. Marking: yellow rectangle n°13 This 10km route embraces the valley of the Aître, once marked out by mills, by following the two panoramic crests that overlook it and the two hamlets of Amerey and Moyenpal. Starting point in front of the school of Amerey: Head towards the west for around 100m, then take the Chemin de la Rappe which climbs to the left. The road turns quickly into a dirt track and goes on for 800m to reach the elevation 430 under the electric line (1). Head to the right onto the road of the plateau which overlooks the valley, then 500m before the village of the Chapelle aux Bois leave the road for the path to the right (2), until you reach the road (3) that goes down to Void de la Bure to the level of the stream of the Aître (4). Cross the by-road to climb up the Côte des Marchands after a small detour on the right. At the top of the slope (5), follow the path of the crest on the right to Moyenpal by passing to the right of la Caravelle (6). When reaching the centre of “le Haut de Moyenpal” at the calvary (7), go down the road to the right to reach the hamlet of Amerey to go to the starting point. Key places: • The Aître (4) starts at the Bois Beaudoin and runs for 10km before flowing into the Coney River in Rasey. Its motive force was used by almost a dozen of mills for flour mill, sawmill, starch mill, or forge activites. • (7) Haut de Moyenpal: a double-housed farm from 1712, a shared barn (see the cross of Lorraine on the door for the carts), an adjacent chamber oven. A must-see is the “Palis” at the crossroads (rocks as fences). • Between the points (2) and (3) at the elevation 430 (la Chapelle aux Bois), take the time to enjoy the viewpoint. • Croix du Boucher: stepping aside (8), it is possible to reach this stele situated at the forest edge. It recalls the circumstances of Constant Breton’s death, a butcher in Bains, who got lost in a snowstorm at this place.

Circuit le Rechentreux XT n°3

Thanks to the FFRandonnée and the village of Xertigny for the creation of this hike and for the work done by their teams throughout the year to mark out and maintain these paths. Marked by a yellow rectangle N°3. This trail - mainly woodland – offers both bucolic paths and beautiful avenues in the forest area of Rechentreux. The stream of the same name, upstream the waterfall, keeps the hiker company. Starting point car park “le Gué du Saut”: At the car park of Gué du Saut, go downstairs, cross the bridge over the waterfall, and climb in the forest following the marking N°3. When reaching the forest path, turn left to a stand of beech trees. When reaching the forest barrier (1), head left onto the old rural path parallel to a path recently metaled which goes along with the territorial limit between Xertigny and Bellefontaine. This path meets the forest road 1km further up and goes along, from that place (2), a planting of Douglas firs – a resinous tree with excellent mechanical properties. When reaching the “Moulin de la Semoule” crossroads (3), head right in the Bois des Flammes mainly full of spruces, pass by the hunting cabin, and get to the forest barrier (4); turn right, after 300m go into a cultivation and grazing area near the village of Bellefontaine. At the hamlet “Le Rupt Guéné” (5), the route goes back in a beautiful forest avenue, which goes on over more than 2km crossing two wetlands on the plateau “la petite faigne et la grande faigne”. This path first crosses a long plating of resinous trees, and then meets a deciduous trees area on its last third. At the end, the route reaches the metaled path (6) demarcating the two municipalities, and finally the starting point. Key places : • “Chêne debout et sapin couché font la charpente millénaire” (standing oak and lying pin make the thousand-year-old framework). This maxim of the companion-builders summarized the interest in the oak tree for its vertical supports and in the resinous tree for the horizontal section of the frameworks. • The deers: The male lives on a 5,000 hectares territory, they always come back where they are born to bellow. The female, if not bothered, is satisfied with a 500 hectares area. • The “Moulin de la Semoule”: The number of watercourses in the Vôge has favoured the development of small retaining reservoirs meant for moving mechanisms and relieving our ancestors of their tiring manual duties. • Wetlands: spreading on the whole territory, the wetlands are specific natural habitats that are used for regulating hydrologic systems and to support a peculiar ecosystem, the fauna, the flora, and the composition of soil.

Circuit le Tabourin XT n°12

Thanks to the FFRandonnée and the village of Xertigny for the creation of this hike and for the work done by their teams throughout the year to mark out and maintain these paths. Marked with a yellow rectangle N°12. This lovely trail around the hamlet of Moyenpal has kept its rural specificity and has two particular features: its land is exclusively cultivated in organic agriculture and it is subject to the winds of the four cardinal points, due to its location on a crest between the valleys of the Aître and the Cône. Starting point below Moyenpal: Park at the end of the hamlet, in front of the hunting cabin near a metal shed. Pass the big farm, head right to the boiler works and ironwork (1), go straight up to the sunken road. After reaching the renovated farm, follow the dirt track to the right. Continue to the road, cross the “haut de Moyenpal” (2) and follow the road on the left to the crossroads of the Caravelle, called “Le Brot” (3). Go on onto the ridge road on the left for 200m, go down the path to the right which will turn again to the right, bordered below by “palis” (fences), pass the vestiges of the farm (4), climb back the path. Follow the marking N°12 at the entrance of the village to the right, go down to the left, cross the pasture by passing the chicanes (5). Follow the path of the pond of the Goutte, cross the road towards the Basses de Moyenpal, take the path climbing to the right (6) in the pastures and reach the starting point. Key places : • “Haut de Moyenpal”: on the right, facing the calvary, observe the main body of farm made of two housings (internal joint ownership) and a common “charri” (a typical barn). The lintel dates to 1712 and has a cross of Lorraine. The small building on the left is an independent chamber oven. • Palis (fences): at the calavary, the road on the left is bordered by fences, stones of sandstone coming from the local quarries, which were once demarcating the plots. • La Caravelle, a plane from the 1960s, was turned into a gite and to which should be added two Antonov of the Aeroflot and one Noratlas after the renovation.

Roulon fort
3.9 km

Roulon fort

The bastion of the fortress of Épinal, designed by General Séré de Rivières, guards the southern accesses to the defence system installed after the 1870 war at an altitude of 445 m. Built in masonry from 1879 to 1881, it is the only one to have two-storey barracks and its internal defence system with a double caponier is particularly well preserved. After the 1870 war and the annexation of the north-eastern part of its territory, France had to rethink its defence based on new fortifications that were on the Toul-Epinal-Belfort line. The entrenched camp of Epinal with its 15 "detached" forts was thus created between 1878 and 1886. Those of Girancourt and Roulon were the guardians facing south. Nearly 400 defenders could be garrisoned there. The change of strategy into an offensive one, instead of a "static" defence system, and the progress of artillery with the high explosive led France to the obligation of concreting the forts to maintain their possible usefulness in 1886. Although it was considered, the modernisation of the Roulon fort was never carried out. During the 1914-1918 war, it was even disarmed like many others and was only used as a training site and equipment depot until its alienation in 1969. It then became private property. Since it was never bombed – it was too far from the front during the First World War and was not armed during the German attack of 18 June 1940 from Bains towards Epinal, it has retained its original character and is particularly well maintained by the current owner who built his house there in 1991. The Roulon fort is a private property, so visiting it is subject to the owner's permission.

Learn more about the amazing history of this former starch factory from the 19th century, a survivor of the Vosges heritage. Our association of enthusiasts will take you on a journey along the "Potato to Starch Trail", to discover a forgotten activity which was yet practised in more than 300 starch factories in the Vosges! For ten years now, the volunteers of the association "Les Kémottes" have been working to restore the potato processing process and to revive the history of the workers. This initiative was made possible thanks to the memories and funny anecdotes passed on by the "old-timers" of the starch factory. The visit begins along the canal that guided the water from the Vôge to the large mill wheel. This wheel produced the energy needed to operate the various machines in the starch factory. We then follow the path of the potato, from the cellar where it was stored, to the sacking of the starch obtained after the extraction process. Immerse yourself in the daily life of the workers: sorting, washing, grating, filtering, decanting, drying... until a fine, white, silky powder was obtained and sent to textile factories, paper mills, glucose factories... walk among the clever installations, from the production workshop to the floor where the starch was dried and sieved. A journey through time that will tell you a lot about the working conditions, the tools and the tasks of the workers in the starch factory. GUIDED TOUR: - Every Friday from June to the end of September at 2.30 pm, simple tour - Every Sunday from June to the end of September at 3pm, simple tour Other dates on reservation for groups: possibility of meal or snack Room hire, events, conferences, exhibitions...

Domaine de la Manufacture Royale

Domaine de la Manufacture Royale

Between forest, canal and river, the Manufacture Royale of Bains is alongside the walking and cycling path. The manufacture Royale was the most important tinware factory in the Kingdom in the 18th century, with an industry born from wood and water? It is one of the best preserved French industrial sites of the 18th century. The history of this industrial site is fabulous. Baron Falatieu, who brought the Manufacture Royale to a peak, left his mark here. Other personalities did the same: Julie Victoire Daubié, the first French baccalaureate female holder, who was born in the Maison du Caissier in 1824, Cavour, the leader of the Italian unification movement, who stayed there in 1839, and the politician Jules Méline. A visit to the park with its century-old trees allows you to discover the dwarf beech, Unesco's tree of the year in 2011, and the rare species that bear witness to the domain’s rich industrial past (Ginko Biloba, Catalpa, Tulip tree). In the charcoal hall, which was used to store charcoal, you can discover the exhibitions that retrace the history of the tinware factory, thanks to the research of Chantal Starck, Remi Ritter, and Anny Thouvenin with the Departmental Archives... The Manufacture Royale has received many awards for the beauty of its park and terraced gardens, and for its chapel and its stained glass windows, made by Nathalie Noirjean and restored with the help of donors and the Fondation du Patrimoine. One of the oldest paternalist industrial sites in Lorraine, turned since then into dwellings, guest houses, gites and rooms in the castle which tell, like the guided tours, this timeless story. Guided tours of the industrial site, its park and its chapel take place on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month from April to October, upon prior registration at the tourist information office. Groups on reservation. Activities, concerts and exhibitions are offered in June, July and September. The site remains open and accessible all year round, and an exhibition is offered free of charge.

Lac de Bouzey

Lac de Bouzey

Bouzey Lake - A natural setting only a stone's throw from the city of Epinal, the Bouzey Lake is a multi-faceted destination/site, ideal for relaxing and clearing your head. Its green surroundings offer a total change of scenery and it is the perfect place to practice various sports and leisure activities. An immersion in the heart of idyllic landscapes - for exercising, swimming or simply sunbathe on the beach! Historically, the Bouzey Lake is an artificial reservoir which supplies Vosges Canal yet it has undeniable ecological qualities because a remarkable ecosystem has developed there! Numerous animals have taken up residence in this bucolic setting: birds such as swans, mallards, coots and other species such as the muskrat or the garter snake. Nature enthusiasts will be delighted: there are many surprises and delicious discoveries along the way. Near the lake is the Etang de la Comtesse peat bog, a protected natural area where flora and fauna flourish. Breathe in peace and quiet in a protected natural setting, during a leisurely walk, a morning jog or a family outing. You can walk around the lake in 1.5 hours, using the 7 km of footpaths for pedestrians. Lovers of water sports, land sports and fishing will not be left out, since many activities are offered around the lake, depending on the season: pedal boats or sailboats for sailing on the water, safe cycling around the lake, supervised swimming during the summer period, jogging along the banks to stretch your legs... Handicapped fishing pontoons have also been specially fitted out for fishermen with reduced mobility. Several picnic tables are also set up around the lake, so that on warm summer evenings you can take a gourmet break while enjoying the magnificent sunsets. The Bouzey Lake is a place accessible to all, for a sporting interlude or to recharge your batteries at the water's edge. A bit of history: the reservoir was created in 1882, to supply the Vosges Canal, a working tool for Voies Navigables de France. In April 1895, the dam broke, with tragic consequences. A monument on the banks of the lake, on the side of the dam, recalls this sad event. Anecdote: the Bouzey Lake is the largest lake in the Vosges, ahead of the lake of Gérardmer! At its full level, the lake covers 140 hectares, against 116 for the lake of Gérardmer.
