Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval / Passy Nature Reserve

Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval/Passy Nature Reserve, the biggest nature reserve in Haute-Savoie, covers a vast region and boasts two impressive glacier cirques (Fer à Cheval and Les Fonts), both bursting with spectacular waterfalls. Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval/Passy Nature Reserve, the biggest nature reserve in Haute-Savoie, is an exclusively limestone universe featuring a wide variety of forms sculpted by erosion: fissures, grooves, etc. It covers 9,000 hectares across different mountain levels: sub-alpine, alpine and nival, from the banks of the Giffre at 900 metres up to the top of Buet culminating at over 3,000 metres. This range of elevations and the diversity of terrains (wet zones, mixed forests, cliffs, grassy areas, etc., offer contrasting habitats that are richly populated with a wide variety of wildlife species. From the forests to the highest peaks, approximately 800 plant species have been recorded in the nature reserve, including 28 different orchids! Sixt forest is dominated by beech and spruce, but only the most compatible plants can be found in the mountain pastures. Because the habitat changes with the altitude, there is a huge diversity of animal species: deer, wild boar, marmot, mountain hare, etc.. Wild animals thrive in the tranquillity of the nature reserve: ibex, bearded vulture, rock ptarmigan and royal eagle. Cantine des Dents Blanches

This picturesque mountain inn nestled in the Barme Valley was originally an alpine farmhouse, built in 1906. Today it is a favourite stopping-place for nature and mountain lovers. The first time you discover Barme it's easy to think you're in Heaven. Starting from the place we call Grand Paradis, this bucolic alpine valley can be reached on foot or by car. By car, the narrow road winds several kilometres through thick forests and along steep mountainsides until, suddenly, there is a break in the trees and the valley appears, spread out below like an illustration right out of Heidi. Nestled in a sunny spot near a bubbling stream with the formidable Barme climbing rock at its back, the Cantine des Dents Blanches is a favourite stop for epicureans in search of local specialties, families out for a Sunday stroll and weary hikers on the Tour des Dents Blanches. We take pride in our homemade, locally-sourced cuisine, served up in the cosy dining room or on the large, sunny terrace. We specialise in traditional dishes, like fondue and croûte au fromage, and delicious homemade desserts, including crêpes and waffles. We also offer a large selection of delicious regional wines. For overnight stays, our simple refuge provides 3 rooms with 2 beds, 1 family room with a double bed and 2 beds for children, 1 dormitory with 5 beds, 1 dormitory with 4 beds and 1 dormitory with 15 beds. There is a loo and washbasin upstairs (cold water) and a hot shower on the ground floor (on request but with no extra charge).
