The Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval needs no introduction and it's no wonder - this stunning setting is easy to reach and offers visitors an unforgettable experience! Right from the start, on the car park, you'll see the waterfalls crashing down from the impressive rock faces of the Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval and the Corne du Chamois, a characteristic mountain peak that stretches above you to an elevation of 2,560 metres. Late spring, when the snow melts (May-June) is when you'll see the greatest number of waterfalls, in the Cirque itself but also in the valley that leads to the Edge of the World. A spectacle you'll never forget! WARNING, you are in the Sixt-Passy Nature Reserve: In spring, until 30 June, dogs are not allowed beyond the reception chalet. From 1 July, dogs are allowed as far as the Prazon café, provided they are kept on a lead.

Standing at the gateway to the highest summits of Sixt, facing the glaciers, the Vogealle Refuge is a key stopoff point for mountaineers preparing to conquer the Grand Mont Ruan (3,040 metres) or the surrounding peaks.

The Salvadon chalets are huddled together in a magnificent valley below Les Avoudrues, the Pointe de Bellegarde and the Pointe de Sambet. These Alpine pastures are still exploited today. Take the wide track that begins at the end of Le Crot hamlet. It climbs up through the woods and some sections are fairly steep! Half way up, you can admire the view from the "Miches de Salvadon", over the north-west side of the Grenier de Commune. The path then rises through some beautiful mixed forest, passing some more modest buildings before leading up to a beautiful panoramic viewpoint from where you can observe the surrounding mountains: just above you, the impressive drops and peaks between the Dent de Verreu and the Pointe Rousse and, to the south-west, the unmistakable silhouette of the Fiz range. You can even make out the famous Rouget waterfall. After entering the Sixt-Passy Nature Reserve, you'll find the forest less dense. After the forest, the path becomes more gentle and gradually joins the beautiful Salvadon valley. Follow the track to the chalets, which you won't actually see until you're practically there.

Magnificent landscapes, with colours that range from the anthracite grey of the rocks to the turquoise blue of mountain lakes. This penultimate stage has a high mountain character. Clockwise itinerary From the refuge de la Vogealle, follow the previous day's route towards the lake. After a sharp rise, take the left-hand path towards the "refuge du Folly par le lac des Chambres" up to the Pas de l'Ours. The path winds along, past a waterfall and into the Vallon de la Vogeallette and then the Vallon des Chambres (snow-covered all year round). Once you've reached the lake, keep to the right and take the cable route that rises above the ice and turquoise-blue waters. After a flat spot, the path descends rapidly, crosses the cold-water torrent, passes a scree and then a grassy slope, and you've reached the Refuge du Folly.

This tour, starting from the village of Sixt, crosses the vast plain of La Glière by a small road leading to Hauterive. From this plain, there is a remarkable view of the Tenneverge and, on the opposite side, of the impressive pillar formed by the Pointe de Sales.

Located in the Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval nature reserve, this refuge is accessible in 3-4 hours of walking from the Fer-à-Cheval cirque. Comfortable and ideally located for hiking or stopping off on various alpine and wild circuits.

The Fer à Cheval is the largest mountain cirque in the Alps. Ringed by towering cliffs, the cirque is breathtakingly beautiful throughout the year but it is most spectacular in the spring, when melting snow swells its waterfalls to majestic proportions. Lying at the eastern end of the Giffre Valley, the cirque forms an immense amphitheatre almost 5 km across and bounded by 500- to 700-m high limestone cliffs. In June, dozens of waterfalls cascade down these huge walls. The Fer à Cheval attracts large numbers of visitors and is twinned with the Gavarnie Cirque in the Pyrenees.

A unique area with impressive rock faces, cliffs 2000 metres high, and hiking trails past numerous waterfalls. Some waterfalls at Fond de la Combe and Nants des Peres at Fer a Cheval are fed by glaciers. If you begin at the bar/restaurant at Plan des Lacs and look towards the Pic de Tenneverge, you'll see two notable waterfalls below the Corne du Chamois: la Meridienne , and to the right of that, la Pierrette. This is also called la Fontaine de l'Or and is one of the highest. Further to the right, on the cliffs of Le Fer a Cheval, are other waterfalls, for example the Joaton, Pissevache, the Lyre (one of the most beautiful), and the Genette. Even further to the right are le Saint-Jacques, la Citerne, le Folly, and la Massue waterfalls. Going in to the Fond de la Combe valley, to the left of the Corne du Chamois, there are many other waterfalls such as le Rejon, la Cage, la Scie, le Violon, and la Gouille. Leaving Fer a Cheval and following the Giffre downstream youi'll find the village of Le Brairet between Le Molliet and Les Curtets. Above this is Le Dard waterfall.

The Cirque du Fer-à-Cheval takes its name from the shape of its cliffs, which form a semi-circle. Its impressive height (up to 3000 metres) gives rise to a multitude of waterfalls, the number of which varies according to the season. A 13th-century church comprising an abbatial part and a parochial part. You can wander freely in the gardens.

This 12th-century abbey is owned by the commune of Sixt-Fer-à-Cheval and the Département de la Haute-Savoie. It hosts a themed exhibition every summer. The abbey's various buildings were constructed in 1144. Ponce de Faucigny became the first abbot of this monastery ruled by Saint Augustin's order, as were the Abondance and Saint-Maurice d'Agaune monasteries of Valais. The abbey established the foundations of agropastoralism, allowing many generations of Savoie-dwellers living in harsh conditions to gradually adapt to necessary developments. Relations between the abbey and the villagers were complex. Although they did not clear the valley as it is often thought, the canons did at least contribute to its enhancement. Sold as national property, the cloistral buildings were partly acquired by Albanis Beaumont, an engineer who wanted to relaunch the mining activity. The other part remained the property of the Cochet innkeepers who, in 1821, boasted "the region's best inn". Purchased at the end of the 19th century by the Rannaud family, the abbey then became the Hôtel du Fer à Cheval et de l'Abbaye. The abbatial structure was acquired by the Department in the year 2000. Above Samoëns, this mountain chalet is located under the "dents blanches", the highest point in the area. Its terrace faces due west, offering a view over the Giffre valley and the opportunity to enjoy beautiful sunsets. The refuge overlooks the Vallée du Giffre and the commune of Samoëns. A sunny terrace overlooking the valley, where you can enjoy omelettes and other à la carte dishes, as well as pretty sunsets. Sleeping accommodation in dormitories for 5 to 12 people. - In summer, it's easily accessible on foot from the Allamands parking lot, taking around 1h45 for everyone, and offers the possibility of day-long or multi-day loop hikes. - In winter, the refuge is located on the route to the tête de Bostan, one of our valley's great ski touring classics.
