From Scherwiller towards Châtenois on the D35 (wine road), at the large bend, take the small forest road and park at the Hühnelmühle car park.  The castle is not accessible by car. This hike will take you through the Ortenbourg massif, which has been granted a biotope protection order for its remarkable flora and fauna. You will take part of the GR5 (red rectangle) and discover the castles of Ramstein and Ortenbourg. The Ramstein is in the process of being consolidated and is closed to visitors. The villages of Dieffenthal, Scherwiller and Châtenois lie in the shadow of the iconic granite silhouette of the Ortenbourg Castle and offer three different routes with 15 discovery spots next to famous tourist sites such as the Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle. The circuit starts with a foray into the vineyard. Small hills and winegrowing villages form a patchwork to the foot of Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle. Further on, Sélestat is the entry point into the Ried Plain, a region of forests and wet meadows. There are several sights to see along the way. Dambach-la-Ville is a flower-decked mediaeval town in a remarkable winegrowing area. Don’t miss 13th-century St. Sébastien’s Chapel perched on the hillside. Scherwiller, located in the shadow of Ortenbourg Castle, is another winegrowing village, home to several wine cellars set behind red sandstone gateways. Further on, Sélestat, the town of Béatus Rhénanus, is home to the famous Humanist Library. St. Foy’s Church is a masterpiece of Romanesque art and an example of the town’s rich historical heritage. St Maurice’s Abbey in Ebermunster is a true gem of Alemannic Baroque architecture and is the only church in France in the Vorarlberg Baroque style. The richly ornamented interior holds a Silbermann organ built in 1730. In Epfig, St. Marguerite’s Chapel is a fine example of Romanesque art in Alsace

The rocky circuit is a real "wild" ecosystem. An isolated rocky island in the heart of the vineyard, this geological site is separated from the mountain by a deeply indented gorge. It takes the form of a chaos of granitic rocks - two-mica granite known as Dambach granite - on the edge of the Vosges massif, a few dozen metres from the fault that separates the Vosges from the Rhine Graben. This is the best example in Alsace of "ball granite" erosion, due to the circulation of water in the network of rock cracks. Departure is in front of the church. Museum Gaspar is housed in the residence of the middle-class family Gaspar from Arlon who had set up in this house (1893) that was built in 1842. It was renovated in 2004. The two most famous members of this family are animal sculptor Jean-Marie Gaspar (1861-1931) and Charles Gaspar (1971-1950) who was a photographer and a sponsor. He gave his house to the town of Arlon on the condition they make a museum of it, dedicated to his brother's work and that put into honour the history and the heritage of Arlon. At the first floor, theree are two restored salons identical to a middle-class salon from the early 20th century that show Jean-Marie Gaspar's sculptures. and the art and picture collection of Charles Gaspar. The rest of the first floor is dedicated to temporary exhibitions of the museum that alternates artv and history. A religion room shows collections about the abbey of Orval and to the people's devotion at the 18th century, and also relics from the ancient Saint-Martin church. But the Masterpiece is the famous altarpiece Retable de Fisenne - a 16th century masterpiece from the Antwerp school. It was bought in 1893 by a middle-class family from Arlon, the family Gaspar. Jean Gaspar (1861-1931) was a sculptor. He was trained by the Antwerp sculptor Jef Lambeaux. His works are in bronze and in plaster and they are exhibited in the salons that have been restorated as they were in his house. His brother Charles (1871-1950) was a photographer, a collector and a sponsor. He gave this house to the town of Arlon. It hosts the library of the Archaeological Institute of the Belgian Province of Luxembourg and its secretary office since 1954. A wide part of the museum is also dedicated to temporary exhibitions about art and history of Arlon.

Rich in the Gallo-Roman past of Arlon, the museum houses an impressive collection that bears witness to the daily life of this period.One of the peculiarities of the museum is its imposing and rich lapidary collection, composed of several dozen fragments of ancient funerary monuments.These blocks and the objects from Roman craftsmanship will teach you more about daily life at that time.

Ortenburg Castle, built between 1260 and 1265 by Rudolf of Habsburg, is one of the most beautiful ruins in the Rhine Valley. It is a masterpiece of military architecture with a high jacket surrounding a 32-metre high keep, which can be seen from afar and fits remarkably well into the landscape. The keep offered six firing levels for the defence and its pentagonal design made it possible to better deflect the attackers' projectiles.

This granite chaos, which overlooks the village and the vineyards, has numerous rocks of varying sizes and is the setting for the annual Schieweschlauje (flaming disc throw) shortly before the end of winter.

With its double fortified enclosure dating from the 13th and 15th centuries, its Witches' Tower dating from 1402 and a magnificent bell tower with turrets and glazed tiles dating from the Romanesque period and the 1530s, the ramparts district also offers the visitor a very detailed interpretation circuit on life in the Middle Ages, which several archaeological excavation campaigns have brought to light.

Restoration of the St. George's Church in Sélestat in progress - scaffolding present In the 8th century, a Carolingian baptismal chapel was located on the site of the church, as part of an imperial complex built by Charlemagne. Charlemagne came here at Christmas time in 775 to pray. It took no less than three centuries to build the church of Saint-Georges under the impetus of the local bourgeoisie, who wanted to assert themselves against the religious power represented by the priory of Sainte-Foy. The construction of the church began in the 1220s and was completed shortly before 1500. At that time, the original choir was replaced by a much larger sanctuary decorated with numerous stained glass windows, 55 of which are still original. The stained glass windows in the choir, some of which date from the 15th century, are without doubt the treasure of this church. The Renaissance pulpit (1619) with its prominent Samson and two columns supporting the painted and gilded stone vat is the work of the sculptor Jerome Kruch, an exceptional work. The Rinckenbach organs date from 1895 and were restored in 1975 by Alfred Kern. Because of its size, the parish church of St. George could be mistaken for a cathedral. However, this is not the case, as a cathedral is the seat of a bishopric, which has never been the case in Sélestat.   The western tower of the church In the early 14th century, construction began on the western tower, which was completed in 1490 and contains six bells, the first of which, known as the "bourdon", is decorated with the Sélestat lion. At 60 metres high, St George's church is one of the highest religious buildings in Alsace, well after Strasbourg cathedral (142 m). In the past, a team of watchmen was stationed at the top of the church to keep an eye on the surrounding area and prevent any fire from breaking out. They also had to ring the quarter-hour bell, which one of them forgot to do in 1886. One of them forgot to ring the bell in 1886 and was punished by paying a fine or spending a day in prison.   The crypt The crypt of St George's Church was once a public passageway open on three sides: north, south and east. This passageway was designed in the 15th century when the new choir was built to avoid dividing the cemetery which then extended around St George's into two parts. The new choir was raised and underneath it a sort of vaulted passageway was built by Master Mathis. It is a vaulted hall with four ribbed windows falling on a heavy central pillar. The passage was closed in the 19th century with glazed stone infills and converted into a crypt.

This building is the work of Alexandre Stamm (1835-1906), architect of the town of Sélestat since 1874. This synagogue was inaugurated on September 3, 1890. With a plan centred on the image of the Rhenish synagogues, this synagogue has a very sober neo-Romanesque decoration. The alternation of yellow sandstone and red bricks as well as pink sandstone chains and frames give it a colourful appearance. Damaged by the Nazis in 1940, the synagogue was restored after the war without recovering the original dome. It was on this occasion that the old ritual bath (Mikveh) of 1836 was cleared.
