For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.
Guidebook with maps/step-by-step
1/ From the start sign at Place de la Croix, walk up Rue des Combrailles and immediately right into Rue de la Fontaine (washhouse), which continues along a grassy path. At the first crossroads, turn left and, at the next, go straight ahead until you reach the T-junction.
2/ Bend left (view of Puy de Dôme). Continue straight ahead through vineyards and orchards until you reach a tarmac road. Turn right for 50 m (view of Combronde) and turn right onto the first track. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead to the fork.
3/ Go up to the left. At the T junction, turn right. At the crossroads, continue uphill and take the first track on the left. Turn right and climb to the top of the Puy de l'Oule (50 m), along the same slightly sloping path (panoramic view of the Puys chain, the Combrailles, the Limagne plain, the Montagne Bourbonnaise, the Livradois-Forez and the Gergovie plateau). Turn right again. Ignore the right-hand path, pass under the high-voltage power line and continue to the next T-junction opposite the orchard.
4/ Take the grassy track on the right, then turn left onto the first track. Continue downhill, ignoring the two right-hand paths until you reach a T-junction. Bear right. At the crossroads, go straight on to point 1. Turn left and return to the starting point in the opposite direction.
