From the car park, cross the Néez and head towards Place de la Bastide. Continue straight on rue Tristan Derême. Go under the railway and N134 bridges. Turn right on the Chemin du Flamand, then immediately right on the dirt road along the N134 road. When the path ends, continue left to the activity area. Turn left towards the fire and rescue centre, then turn right towards the Cassiède garage. Immediately after the garage, take the grassy path on the left leading to the Teulère lake (tile factory in Béarn).
Go around the lake to the right in the undergrowth as close as possible to the fence. On leaving the wood, descend to the right above the weir. Cross a wet zone, pass in the middle of the hedge of trees. Then turn immediately right, walk along the edge of the forest and join the chemin du Brougnat. Take it to the left, pass in front of beehives, climb through the undergrowth to recent buildings, and come out on the D24.
Take the gravel side alley to the right as far as the Calvary and join the Oubangui path. Follow it between the houses for 500 m. Go down to the left on the Chemin d'Escoubet. In the first bend on the left, go straight on the sunken path which rises towards the Escoubet Farm.
At the intersection, go up Chemin de Bourie to the right, to a house 250 m away. Take the grassy path to the right and climb through the undergrowth to reach the D230 in front of the Bastarrous water tower. Go past this half-buried water tower (highest point of this loop, alt. 358m) and descend to the right for 800m.
After the Gassies farm, take the Chemin de Mesplet which descends to the right. Portion of steep and irregular path for about 200m. The descent then becomes easier on the concrete track. Continue straight on the road (wrong way sign) on a steep slope to the "Maison pour Tous". Continue straight, leave the dirt road from the start to the right and pass under the bridges. Go through rue de la Teulère between cemetery on the left and gendarmerie on the right. Join Avenue d'Aspe, cross at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight to rue Henri IV. Then turn right and after 50 m turn left into Allée de la Prison leading to the North Gate. Turn right and, at the corner of the street on your left, you will discover the so-called House of Jeanne d'Albret with its tower, housing a spiral staircase. Take the left street towards the bridge and the departure car park.
This beautiful hike of about 2 hours allows you to take a little height on the slopes of Jurançon and offers you the best of Béarn in terms of variety of landscapes: we pass in turn by the vineyards, the forest, as well as by paths countryside… This walk, always against a backdrop of the Pyrenees, will make you discover superb panoramas, the pretty Gan bastide as well as the Teulère lake and its fossiliferous site.
The fossiliferous natural site of Gan is a unique place of great geological and ecological value. Following the cessation of activity of the old Gan tile works in 1975, the marl extraction pit was gradually filled to form a pond. Over the years, nature has invaded the site and this site is now home to significant biodiversity. The aquatic zones, the vegetation of the banks, the woods, the meadows, are all natural environments.
The North Gate called "prison door" is the only vestige of the original enclosure. It was built in 1371 at the expense of Gaston III Fébus. Above the pointed arch, we see the traces of two coats of arms that have been destroyed. On the one on the right, you can make out the Béarnaise cows of the Béarn shield. This gate was the northern entrance to the city from Pau. It has been listed in the additional inventory of Historic Monuments. Gan is the only Bastide in the department to have kept an original door.
The house of Andoins called "Jeanne d'Albret" was built in 1593 by the merchant Guillaume d'Andoins. It has a tower, housing a stone spiral staircase, like the two other beautiful residences of Gan (Marca and Arrac). The date 1593 is also engraved inside the house, on the mantelpiece. Corisande d'Andoins, whose name the adjacent street bears, mistress of Henri IV, was not related to the Andoins of Gan. Born and died in Hagetmau, she never came to Gan. At the beginning of the 20th century, Gan's first postcards named it "Maison Jeanne d'Albret"... She died in 1572, long before the construction of this house!
All year round, the Cellar offers you the opportunity to discover and visit its facilities for free (presses, semi-buried cellar, Gallo-Roman mosaics, bottling centre, etc.), to taste its wines and enjoy a moment of relaxation. escape within everyone's reach. With family, friends or in a group, the Cave de Gan-Jurançon is a must for lovers of wine and gastronomy.
