Description

This loop allows you to discover pastoralism in the Nâves valley, as well as a preserved natural heritage. Along the way, you'll enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding peaks.

Climb the ancestral mule track once used by farming families with their herds to reach the ‘montagnettes’ in spring, an intermediate stage lasting a few weeks, before entrusting their cows to the shepherds of the ‘fruit commun’ for the hundred-day summer campaign in the mountain pastures.

From the Maison de Nâves, head towards the centre of the village along the route du fruit commun. After crossing the bridge over the Grand Nant de Nâves, turn left up the Rue du Quermoz. Take the old mule track (GRP Tour du Beaufortain) towards the Nant du Beurre refuge. The path leads above the torrent (Grand Nant de Nâves) through a wooded area that gradually becomes clearer. After a short climb, admire the ‘fairy chimneys’ (the result of erosion) on your left, then arrive at the Raverette chalets. Continue up to altitude 1783 m, passing a beautiful oratory. On the slope in front of you (between Roc Marchand and Grand Crétet), you may be able to see the large flock of sheep that graze here in summer. On your right, you may also come across herds of Tarines cows, whose milk is used to make Beaufort PDO cheese.
At this point, take the carriage road that winds along the side of the road, all the way to your right.
Then continue on the gently sloping path through the mountain pastures to the Tovet plateau (1560 m), where the Nâves Nordic ski area starts in winter. All the way down, you can admire the Quermoz on your left and, in the background, on the other side of the valley, the Valmorel resort, the Col de la Madeleine and the Lauzière massif. You may come across a few marmots.
You can take a break at Le Tovet, where there are picnic tables, a hammock, a play area, slacklines and an orientation table. To return, take the pretty path around the plateau and down towards the village of Grand-Nâves. You can then return directly to your starting point.
