N°53 Col de Pétragème
Description
What could be more impressive than venturing under the Ansabère needles where the pastoral world and high mountain stand side by side. What's difficult about this challenging trek is the distance and final steep and slippery scree. A sight for sore eyes!

Steps
Lamary Bridge
From the parking of Masousa, the hike starts on the piste for 2.4km. Cross the Gave d'Ansabère over Lamary Bridge and continue going up a grassy track. The slope gets steeper and pebbly. After a brief section in the undergrowth you'll come out on the plateau. Fork left (south west) and cross the plain.
Cabanes d'Ansabère
Follow the winding path up then enter the beech forest. The path widens and, after a straight section, an S-bend takes you out of the forest. The track takes a right as you approach the cabins. You can take a break to stock up on water and cheese here.
Descent
The descent is the same as the ascent. Be careful at the start, it's sloping and the soil is loose.

Ansabère needles
The needles are at their best (2271m and 2377m peak) as you come out of the woods. On the left is the Col de Pétragème (2090m)
Sheep's milk cheese
You can buy a piece of cheese at the cabin where the shepherd lives in summer. The cheese is produced and salted on-site.
Pic du Midi d'Ossau
The Pic du Midi d'Ossau (2884m) shows off its one-of-a-kind figure as you reach the mountain pass.
