Leaving from the Altenstadt Transport Conservatory, set off on a tour of the Lauter Lines through the Wissembourg municipal forest, part of which extends into the Natura 2000 area of the river Lauter.
In order to defend his territory, Louis XIV set about building levees along the river Lauter. These levees were punctuated by a dozen or so small forts stretching for around ten kilometres from west to east.
The remains of these earthen levees, just a few metres high, can still be seen today along the signposted path.
After the Bienwaldmühle mill, leave the forest to gradually reach the village of Schleithal, the longest village in Alsace at almost 3.5 km. After crossing the village, return to the Wissembourg municipal forest and at the end of the route pass the Hardt racecourse, famous for its horse races, particularly during the Whitsun festivities.
