Description

A forest walk with numerous viewpoints over the Forez mountains, the Dore valley and the Hautes Chaumes moors. Boutonnargues, with its castle, was once a large seigneury dominating the valley and the many mills on the Dore.

Location complements

From the village of Cunlhat, take the D65 towards La Chapelle-Agnon. Cross the village and continue on the main road towards Bertignat.

Reception complements

For your own safety, always take a bottle of water, a hat, warm clothing and footwear suitable for walking.
Depending on weather conditions, certain itineraries are not recommended in bad weather (fog) or are not practicable, or even forbidden, during the winter season.
Some sites are fragile, so stay on the marked trails. Avoid picking wild flowers and disturbing wildlife. Pick up your garbage.
Animals are not allowed on some routes.

Guidebook with maps/step-by-step

1/ From Place de l'Eglise, take the D65 for 300 m, turning left as you leave the village. The path joins a small road which you follow for 100 m. Follow the forest track to reach the road, which you follow through La Faye and then La Roche.

2/ In the village, take the left-hand path lined with low walls, then turn left immediately. Go down to the stream and turn right as far as the Route de Pubrières. Follow this road to the right for 100 m, then go straight on past a house. After the house, turn left, go down the track for 300 m, then turn left onto a path that leads to Boutonnargues (view of the Dore valley and Forez mountains).

3/ On the left, follow the asphalt road. Continue uphill to a crossroads. Take the asphalt road to the right. Turn right on the second road towards the village of "Chassagnon". Continue straight ahead on the downhill path. At the next junction, turn left down to Le Chassaing. In the village, turn left on the tarmac track, then left on the first path up to Collange-Basse.

4/ Take the asphalt track on the left up to Collange-Haute. At the crossroads, turn left as far as the transformer. Turn right and climb up through Rourre and Brugière. After the first houses, turn left along a meadow. At the top, turn right onto the D67. Follow the road for 100 m, then turn left. Continue along this track (view of the Forez mountains). Follow the road to the left for 1 km to Les Plaines.

5/ Turn right to Le Prat. At the end of the hamlet, turn left onto the D65. Follow it to the left until you reach the starting point.

Yes. Dogs must be kept on a leash due to the presence of herds.
